thinking about daneel's "go, and sin no more" today. thinking about how young he was in that book and how that was probably the first time it was left totally up to him how to reprimand someone's behavior (i.e., whether to punish or forgive the crime at hand). do y'all think fastolfe knew that by putting daneel in charge of the murder investigation he'd allow daneel the chance to learn how to show mercy? do you think he could have guessed it would be because daneel met some shaking chihuahua of a man, and that said man permanently changed how daneel saw humanity and emotions? do y'all ever think about how elijah was daneel's first glimpse into a world of spiritual healing, conflicting actions, and trusting someone to do the right thing for the betterment of the people around them? and what that says about the way spacers exist compared to earthen culture, and how for a society that claims to value their robots as equals, it took an agoraphobic, bigoted earther to teach daneel how to forgive? to allow daneel to recognize when someone had wronged him and his family? to acknowledge that daneel would likely be handling the loss of sarton for the rest of his life? and that the most healing action sometimes isn't the obvious choice? cause uh. i'm thinking about it.

Fanart of the main characters and some concept design for my favorite book, "The End of Eternity." It's a weird and beautiful story about people who use time travel to control society, but end up losing their own humanity. Its anti-authoritarian message stands out among Asimov's work. Perhaps this message is also why the only two adaptations were made by Soviet countries in the late 70s and 80s.
I loved the story so much when I read it last year that I became an avid reader again for the first time since I was a kid. I find myself comparing it to every story I've read or watched since that deals with time travel, patriachy, and repression.
Asimov also published an earlier draft of the story in "The Alternate Asimovs," which I would also recommend as a comparison, since you can see that he broke the original villain into pieces and distributed these to the other characters. This created personalities full of contradiction and nuance. It's really interesting!

No Unnecessary Distinctions - Chapter 23: Commotion at an Intersection
https://archiveofourown.org/works/35069428/chapters/125228776
It’s showtime at Times Square. A robot is destroyed, sparking a reaction in the crowd as multiple lines of subterfuge converge at the famous intersection.
Trivia: Bunch of New York Times Square things, and a little nod to The Marvellous Mrs Maisel ;)

Actually all of these were for The Caves of Steel, I just decided to pop another title on for the heck of it. If it were The Naked Sun, the Spacer worlds wouldn’t so densely populated, and they'd be wearing more foreign clothing.

Passport to Paradise
The intrepid duo embarks on special expeditions to discover and explore wild planets across the Outer Reaches, aboard their private Hummingbird-class hybrid, Volo. Volō is Latin for “want/wish/intend to/consent to/be willing to” (root of Volition) and “to fly” (root of Volant)

This piece began with the idea of multiple outfits over the same pose—plainclothes, spacesuits, festive wear, etc—and for no sensible reason I went with safari first…
Also, glorious semi-nudes! Because I couldn’t resist adding certain details (albeit not all) + colour during the anatomy/musculature construction step. And I'm really liking this x-ray vision 😏 Am I the only one?

No Unnecessary Distinctions Chapter 15: Trouble upon the Doorstep
Summary: With the deadline expired, the evening news carries an upsetting program. Heated arguments ensue and relationships are put to the test.
This marks ~one year, 15 chapters, ~200 pages, and 62,463 words of No Unnecessary Distinctions 🥳 (For reference, The Caves of Steel is 224 pages long) I can't believe I'm still writing this, and that folks are still reading! There are even subscribers on AO3! And followers here, of course, even new ones! Wow!

I really am in my Robot Reading Era because my current reading list is
The Wild Robot - juvenile fiction about a robot surviving on an island, kind of like reading a survival story like Hatchet or My Side of the Mountain but from a too-logical, analytical pov which makes it extra interesting.
The first Monk & Robot book - my understanding from the blurb on the back of the book is that this takes place in a peaceful utopian society where everyone's needs are met, and one day a robot from their previous society returns and cannot leave until it has fulfilled its purpose of providing something that they need (which no one has need for, because they have everything). I haven't actually started yet and I'm really excited about it because wow what a great premise. 💗 I cannot wait to learn about that world.
and I'm on the waiting list for the third Murderbot Diaries book as well. 💖 (I have made other posts about it, but this series is about a corporate-owned security robot equipped with deadly weaponry, that is actually super shy and kind of anxiety-riddled and just wants to watch soap operas instead of doing the shooty stuff. I'm hesitant to say that their inner dialogue is sarcastic & cynical because that makes them sound awful, but holy crap these books are funny, just for how bluntly this robot observes the events around them. and it definitely does not develop any soft spots for the humans it protects. no sir.)
Beep beep 🤖 real robot hours.
