Checking in from a week or whatever long hiatus to spill the tea on some truths that have been high on my mind lately : I’ve heard several stories in the last few weeks about various displays of unprofessionalism in the bridal industry — a few of people I know, and have referred clients to in the past, and it’s really frustrating. My integrity is something that matters a lot to me, there’s not much I wouldn’t do to maintain it, and it’s disappointing when people I’ve personally vouched for just don’t seem to care as much. I take my job VERY seriously, and my reputation both as a professional and a human matters to me. I mean what I say, and I back it up with action. If I don’t stand for something, I won’t support it, and I definitely won’t make money off of it. If I make a commitment, it would take something incredibly serious for me to break it — and not before working tirelessly to find a replacement to make sure my client was well taken care of. The older I get, the lower my tolerance for bullshit, unprofessionalism, and toxicity becomes. I’m only interested in associating with, investing in, and sharing my energy with people who operate similarly. Which is honestly partly why I never saw myself leading a team before now. I’ve always been more of a ‘lone wolf’ — I enjoy being on my own and have a tendency to be reclusive; and after being in a management position for so many years prior to going freelance, I honestly didn’t want to be responsible for anyone else. I spent over a decade building my business and creating a name for myself, and trusting someone else with my brand, my name terrified me. Leading a team can be stressful and overwhelming, but it’s also very rewarding. I trust each artist on my team implicitly, and I get so much joy and inspiration from them daily. I feel so honored to work with such talented professionals who value honesty and integrity, and are dedicated to going above and beyond for our clients. “But you don’t 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 like you’re 36” “You look so 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨” “I would have 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 guessed you were that old” Talking to people about their age/looks, or your opinion of their age/looks, or even your opinion of your own age/looks, even if it’s meant to be a compliment, can be harmful. Who decides which age is ‘old’? And why is it so commonly accepted that a woman is only beautiful when she’s young? I’ve got my own struggles with myself; things I’ve been working on for most of my life, but I don’t see others the way I see myself, and I never approach someone’s face as something that needs fixing. As I age, I’m learning to appreciate my own natural beauty, and I’m more interested in bringing out the beauty that’s already there for my clients — real looking skin, real looking brows, soft, subtle, timeless glamour. It hurts my heart to meet a mother of the bride or groom, or really anyone who’s mature in age, and hear them speak in a self deprecating way. I hear things like “you’ve really got your work cut out for you with me” or “anything you do will be better than this” ALL the time. One of the best things about my job is helping people to see and feel the beauty in themselves that I see, and working with mature skin and faces is such a treat for me because I get to show my clients that that beautiful girl they remember is still there. Beauty standards are bullshit. Beauty isn’t one thing; it’s subjective, it’s a feeling, and it looks good on EVERYONE. I still forget to give myself the same love I give to others, but I remember today 🖤 Thank you all for the beautiful birthday wishes. A bit does transfer over time, but the consistency stays emollient enough that it’s super easy to blend out with my fingertip. I especially love this because it wears beautifully under a mask, and barely transfers, so no need to worry about blotchy or patchy coverage. Hi friends 👋🏼 This time of year has been conflicting for me for a while now. Spring is a time of rebirth — seeds are sprouting from the ground, the trees of my street are full of pink and while petals, and the air feels fresh again. But April also represents great personal loss for me. Right as I begin to feel revived by the colors and scents and feelings of spring, I’m reminded of those deep, sad feelings and emptiness. Paired with everything that’s been going on in this country — the rising of covid cases and misinformation due to the pandemic fatigue we’re all experiencing, statewide legislative attacks on the rights of Trans people, countless cases of antisemitism and AAPI hate, and the numerous heartbreaking murders of Black and Brown individuals by the police... I just needed to take a step away. Bad news feels like the norm, and just when a glimmer of hope (like the success of mass vaccinations) appears... more bad news pours in. I would love to be a bright beacon of positivity in this corner of the internet, but I would be doing a disservice if I just continued to flood your feed with bridal beauty and witty captions, and didn’t address the shadows of real life. Keep the conversation going. Stay informed.
