These lonesome, hollow-eyed figures of the Guardian tarot just falling off from the deck one by one as i was shuffling the cards, each of them an emotion, wordless states of being.. and as i prepare to put the deck away and shuffle one more time for good bye, One more guardian..

Everyone’s looking for pleasure, but you should look for someone to love. Also, warning!

It is difficult to read the cards for a friend, because it is so easy to impose meanings on the cards, meanings that are already in my mind and that i know they would “fit”. Also, there is an issue of privacy. In these circumstances, I go back to the novice-style of reading, where a card has a predetermined meaning, rather than call upon my intuition. The request was for a reading about work and I chose a progression of three cards, with one more on top for which way to go forward and one at the bottom for what not to do. The 4 of Coins, in the left corner is the shadow card.

A friend wanted to know what her future holds for her, so with such a general question i decided to go with a large spread.. the secret of the High Priestess.. just to have a lot of cards. The interesting thing was that the first two cards just dropped out of the deck, while shuffling.. the 5 of Swords and the Queen of Wands and i let placed them in the middle, as the main significators. The rest were drawn. So let’s begin: At the heart of the matter there lies the Queen of Wands (the querent) and she caries with her a great pain and great loss (the 5S). The QofW is a woman of talent and kind, but she struggles with a burden of suffering. The three cards above are representing the influences over the querent - the Devil is the influencing force that is moving away, signifying the beginning of a sense of freedom and release from something that kept the querent in a strong bond, unable to move, the 7 of Cups as the current influence speaks about dreaming and possibilities, which are further strengthened by the Moon card. This could mean that a time of dreaming and wandering is beginning with a new sense of freedom, while there is a risk of getting lost in the dreams, but this is something that always is at risk when one is released into freedom. The 3 of Swords represents the hidden influence and again it is about heartbreak and suffering. The 5 of Pentacles is about the visible influence and speaks of money and material shortages. This is also strengthened by the 4 of Pentacles, the card that sits where the secret of the High Priestess should have been (if it had been a Major Arcana card). But the 4P is about keeping money tight and not spending and being closed in and withdrawn. And that should change if there is a desire to find out what there lies in secret for the querent. Finally, the next step is the Knight of Wands. The Queen of Wands is instructed to go towards the Knight of Wands. It is a relationship based on similar interests. Is the Knight a real man or an idea? Maybe both? Overall, i would say: you carry a burden of pain and you have not been able to move freely for some time, but you are starting to dream and wonder and you may get lost in the dreaming, but if you open up and start spending your talants, a Knight will be coming your way.

A small spread I did for a friend who wanted to consult the tarot for a career advice and this is the story that I can put together - there was a dramatic change, an unexpected reshuffling of the patterns of life as it was until then (the Tower) that was followed by the creation of family (family love - the 10 of Cups and family life - the 10 of Coins). In a discussion I had with this friend a few days before this spread, I had told her that she may not have succeeded in some things, but one thing she got right was her family. And here it is, in the 10s, the family being born on the ruins of a tower that fell. To clarify the way forward, i drew two more cards.. the 8 of Cups, signifying a change, a letting go of what is familiar and choosing a new path (a new job or career, maybe?), making a way into something new, something that will allow the personal qualities of the querrant to shine through (the Sun).

a read for a friend with my very lovely Norwegian deck and here she is caught between the two feminine forces of the Major Arcana, her World sitting between the deep, unconscious forces of the High Priestess and the earthy power of the Empress. A choice is called forth in the Lovers card and its effects will be transformative. The shadow card: the Wheel of Fortune.
and sometimes the Tarot just tells it as it is, no advice, no insight into what may come, just a clear image of the current state of events to look at.

so This Man asks “what is keeping me from starting to write on my long postponed project?”.. and the succession of the Hierophant and the Temperance followed by the Fool has me tempted to say that it is love of order and balance that keeps This Man from taking the plunge and step into the abyss of creativity. Then I notice how the wings of Temperance are alike the feathers of writing tools from times long gone, but so much still associated in imagination with writing creatively. And I arrive at this conclusion - This Man’s ability to fly the wings of writing is stifled between his need to bow to and follow the rules of the world (the Hierophant) and his constant running for new excitements and experiments (the Fool). He needs to make room and move away from both.
