Chapter 12 is up!
Beca awoke, once again, in Chloeâs arms. She was snuggled close to her girlfriend, not a stitch of clothing between them. Beca could still feel the previous nightâs activities in all of the right places. She wouldnât have minded a repeat in the morning, but Chloeâs phone alarm soon woke the pair.
Beca felt Chloe press a kiss on her shoulder. âMorning,â Chloe said, her voice thick with sleep.
âHey.â
âLast night was so, so good.â
âIt was. I canât tell you the last time I felt that good, if ever.â
Beca felt Chloe sit upright quickly. âWait, was that your first time?â
Beca shook her head. âI had a girlfriend in my senior year of high school. We slept together a handful of times. But she never made me feel anywhere near as good as you did last night.â
âAwes,â said Chloe. âYou seemed pretty confident, so I figured this wasnât new. But, you never know, and we probably should have talked about that before sleeping together.â
Beca shrugged. âMorgan and I were each otherâs firsts, so I donât have any idea how the talk goes.â
âWell, if you want to talk numbers, youâreââ
Beca cut her off. âI donât need to know, do I? I assume youâre clean, right?â
âOh, totes. I got tested at the health center a few months ago, just in case. Also, I always used condoms with guys, and Iâve never shared any of my sex toys without washing them really well in between.â
Becaâs face warmed at Chloeâs very casual mention of sex toys. âYou haveâŚâ Beca couldnât bring herself to say that phrase.
âBec, come on. After what we did last night, Iâm sure you can say it.â
âSex toys,â she said, hands buried in her face.
âThere you go!â Chloe said, in a tone that was way too chipper, in Becaâs opinion, for the situation. âDo you want to try some?â
âNow?â
âOf course not. We have rehearsal in, like, a half hour.â
âRight.â Beca pondered the idea for a moment. âYeah, sure. You can show me the next time your dorm is free. Or, if by some miracle, mine is free. I swear the entire Korean Student Association has been in my dorm before, and one time, I think at least four people were sitting on my bed.â
âDid you kick them out?â
âNo. I tread pretty lightly around Kimmy Jin. I grabbed my laptop and headphones and headed to the library. I found a corner where I could work on my mixes in peace.â
âYou can do that in the library?â
âWell, I was a little limited with the lack of soundboard, but, yeah. I triple-checked that the sound from my laptop was coming through my headphones, though, before starting.â
âGotcha.â Chloe grabbed her phone and looked at the time. âWeâd better get dressed. I have some breakfast sandwiches in my fridge we can microwave or some protein bars if that works.â
âIâm good with either.â
The two got dressed, and, thanks to the pairâs unavoidable urge to make out for just a little longer than they should, they grabbed protein bars and ate them on the way to rehearsal.
Aubrey was her usual uptight, bossy self during the rehearsal. Sheâd chosen that day to review the video of their performance and nitpick it. She called Beca out on her poor âhand heartâ shape during âEternal Flame.â Beca simply nodded and assured her sheâd try harder at the next competition. Chloe had opened her mouth to speak up, but she stopped once she noticed Becaâs subtle shake of her head. She didnât want her well-meaning girlfriend to say too much and out her anxiety attack sheâd had before the competition.
The day of the next competition, Chloe headed to Becaâs dorm beforehand to help with her hair. Beca found herself in a fairly calm mood, and her girlfriend appeared to be very relieved.
Beca couldnât believe her ears when she heard her mix of âBulletproofâ and âRelease Meâ playing on the campus radio station that was playing on the outdoor speakers. She took off running toward the station.
âHey!â she yelled at Luke, who was in the DJ booth, unable to hear her. She banged on the window. âThis is my track! Youâre playing my song right now! That is awesome! You like it? You put it on the radio! That is amazing!â She was so excited, and she didnât even care that Luke probably thought she sounded ridiculous.
âSick beat,â said Luke.
âYeah, I always thought her beats were pretty sick,â said Jesse from the second level of the station.
âHey, Becky, listen, spring break, I want you to take the night shift. Play your music. The deejay at âThe Garageâ does a brilliant mix of this song as well, but yours? Itâs better,â said Luke.
âYeah, it is,â said Beca, feeling cocky.
âIâm going to listen to her tonight. I think you should come with,â said Luke.
âI have a thing,â said Beca.
She saw Luke look her over. âFlight attendant training?â
âYeah, thatâs it. Iâm practicing saying, âCoffee, tea, pillow?ââ Beca waited for a beat. âNo, Iâm a Barden Bella. Tonightâs the semi-finals.â
âReally?â asked Luke. âI did not have you pegged as an a cappella girl.â
âThatâs âcause you donât know Becky like I do,â said Jesse. He turned to Beca. âSee you tonight.â He walked out the door of the radio station, carrying his Trebles jacket with him.
Beca stood outside the booth, smiling. Part of her couldnât believe Luke had finally played one of her mixes.
Just as the song ended, Chloe came to the radio station. âCome on, Beca, letâs go. I convinced Aubrey to let you stay at the station until your song is over, but sheâs going to lose her shit if you donât head to the bus.â
As they walked over to the bus, Beca saw Benji by the Treblesâ bus, begging them to bring him with them.
"Can I hitch a ride? Iâd take my car, but...I donât have one,â said Benji.
âBenji, Iâm sorry,â said Jesse. âI think only Trebles can ride the bus. Itâs pretty much a rule.â
âOf course. Good luck tonight,â said Benji
Beca shot Jesse a look. âCanât you do something to help him?â
Jesse sighed, reached into his pocket, and tossed his car keys to Benji, which he did not catch. âBe careful with her, okay?â
Benji nodded as he retrieved the keys from the ground. âThanks, Jesse,â Benji said, and his face lit up like a Christmas tree.
Fat Amy pulled the bus into a gas station. âDonât you flat-butts worry, Iâve got this. Iâm just going to pump and dump.â
âI did not need to know that,â said Beca.
The Bellas were chatting on the bus when they heard Amy yell, âIâve been shot! Iâve just been shot! Help me!â from behind the bus.
Cynthia Rose was the first off the bus, followed closely by Beca and Lilly.
When Beca came around, Amy was sitting up. âIâm sitting up. Iâm talking; thereâs no need for mouth-to-mouth.â
âWhat happened?â Beca asked.
âBumper threw a big-ass burrito at me! Iâm going to kill him, I swear. Iâm going to finish him like a cheesecake.â
âOkay, Amy, letâs get back on the bus,â said Beca. âLetâs find you a clean shirt.â
They got on the bus, and Beca explained what had happened.
âItâs a good thing I insisted everyone bring a spare uniform,â said Aubrey. âPut that on, and letâs get back on the road.â
Beca looked at Amy and noticed there was a little bit of burrito just behind her ear. She got up from her seat next to Chloe and moved to the empty one behind Amy.
She quietly said, âYouâve got yourself a little something there.â
âJust leave it,â Amy replied. âIt fuels my hate fire.â
Just as Beca sat down, Chloe began to sing.
I hopped off the plane at LAX with a dream and my cardigan
Cynthia Rose joined her.
Welcome to the land of fame excess
Am I gonna fit in?
The next thing she knew, the rest of the group joined in, some of them even doing the a cappella version of the instrumentation. She folded her arms and refused.
Jumped in the cab,
Here I am for the first time
Look to my right and I see the Hollywood sign
This is all so crazy
Everybody seems so famous
Beca said, âThis is lame.â
My tummy's turnin' and I'm feelin' kinda homesick
Too much pressure and I'm nervous,
That's when the taxi man turned on the radio
And the Jay-Z song was on
And the Jay-Z song was on
And the Jay-Z song was on
The entire group was looking at Beca, urging her to join in. Chloe said, âI know you know it, Beca.â
Beca continued to fold her arms across her chest, but she could feel her resolve cracking.
âBecaâŚâ Chloe said, giving her the puppy-dog eyes.
So I put my hands up
They're playing my song,
And the butterflies fly away
They continued the rest of the chorus until they heard the bus sputter to a stop. Amy announced that theyâd run out of gas. Apparently, she hadnât managed to fill up the tank when theyâd stopped due to the flying Mexican food.
Aubrey initially refused when Chloe began to suggest they call the Trebles, and Beca couldnât help but laugh just a little when Fat Amy refused to explain why she had Bumperâs number in her phone. Even Aubrey couldnât think of another way to get to the competition, so she begrudgingly agreed.
Once they got on the Treblesâ bus, the Bellas all sat on one side, the Trebles on the other. Nobody spoke for the first few minutes, aside from Chloe thanking Donald for picking them up.
âSo, Bellas, what boring, estrogen-filled set have you prepared for us this evening?â asked Bumper.
âUmm, excuse me,â said Fat Amy. âBut you guys are going to get pitch-slapped so hard, your man boobs are going to concave.â
âGentleman, I believe we were in the middle of our warm-up,â said Bumper. He blew the pitch pipe before singing, âYou can suck my balls,â in a scale pattern.
The Trebles echoed him.
Not to be outdone, Fat Amy responded with, âYou can lick my assâ in the same scale pattern.
The Bellas echoed her, and the groups tried to outdo each other until the bus screeched to a halt at the parking lot of the auditorium of the school hosting the semi-finals.

CHAPTER FIVEâJESSE SWANSON
RATING:Â M
PAIRING: Multi (w/ Bechloe end game)
SUMMARY:
The story of how Beca and Chloe both find âthe Oneâ (AKA each other) (AKA the Love Life AU that no one asked for)
Iâm sure that you were expecting this one at some point, reader. After all, we sort of know how this one goes. In short: acapella boy meets acapella girl, they date for three years in college, and they do not go on to have aca-children.Â
âI think that Jesse likes me,â she supplies nonchalantly. Sheâs not really sure what drives her to say something, especially because itâs so not like her to open up to people, but thereâs something about Chloe that makes her feel safe enough to tear down those walls just a little bit.
Chloe lets out an incredulous laugh at this confession.
âI could have told you that at the beginning of the year,â Chloe scoffs. âI canât believe that youâre just now figuring this out, Bec.â
She blushes at the term of endearment and her own denseness.
âIâm justâŚI donât know, people donât usually like me like that,â she says, feeling insecure in the moment. âIâm not like you, Chloe, people donât usually fall all over themselves for me like they do you.â
Chloe rolls her eyes.
âYes they do, you just donât notice,â she reassures Beca. âYouâre kind of hot. And I should know because Iâve seenââ
âOh my god, dude!â Beca interjects, cheeks burning up with embarrassment at the memory of what they refer to as The Shower Incident. âI wish you would just let that go already itâs so embarrassing.â
Chloe just laughs, shaking her head.
âQuit deflecting, letâs talk more about Jesse."

Chapter 11 is up!
Beca awoke, initially wondering who had their arms around her. She smiled when she remembered it was Chloe. Her joy was short-lived when Chloeâs phone alarm rang a minute or two later.
She felt Chloe press a kiss to her neck and then said in a tone far too cheerful for 7:00 on a Sunday morning, âRise and shine, Beca!â
Beca turned to face her and said, âYouâre lucky youâre that pretty.â
âHey, Becs, do you have anything to eat? We donât have time to hit the dining hall before practice.â
Beca reached into one of her bottom desk drawers and produced a box of Pop-Tarts. âHere, I still have most of a box my mom bought in bulk over the semester break.â
âNice.â Chloe flipped through the packs before deciding on the strawberry flavor. âI think I need to head back to my room and get something to wear for practice.â
âAnd catch Posen and Conrad banging? Eww. Go ahead and grab whatever from my closet. Iâm not that much shorter than you are.â
Beca grabbed some clothing for herself before going through her closet again and selecting a few things that she thought might fit her girlfriend. She smiled as she thought that word in her head again: âgirlfriend.â
âWhat are you smiling about?â asked Chloe as Beca handed her some clothing.
âMy amazing girlfriend.â
Chloe kissed Beca on the cheek before stepping away and getting dressed.
Beca and Chloe ate their Pop-Tarts as they headed to practice, Beca making sure to put her pill bottles into her bag.
The practice was more of the same: Aubrey barking orders and Fat Amy improvising her solo. Beca thought Amyâs improvisations were generally better than the stuffy, stiff choreography she was supposed to perform.
Beca snickered to herself, remembering the text Aubrey had sent Chloe. She supposed that getting some action from Stacie hadnât been enough to calm down the captain.
As promised, Chloe took Beca to the pharmacy near the campus after practice. Beca wasnât surprised in the least that the pharmacist knew Chloe by name.
âSo, what can I do for you today, Chloe? I donât think youâre due for a refill yet.â
Beca saw Chloe look at her expectantly, but she didnât know what to say.
Chloe spoke for Beca after a beat. âChuck, this is my girlfriend, Beca. She needs help transferring her prescriptions.â
âDo you have your pill bottles?â he asked.
Beca rummaged in her bag and produced all four bottles.
âGreat. Do you have your insurance card?â
âNo. Iâve never actually done this before. My mom always did it back at home,â said Beca, feeling her cheeks warm.
Chuck smiled back at her. âThatâs okay. Most of my Barden students havenât done this either. Do you know which of your parents carries the insurance?â
Beca shrugged. âMy mom, maybe? My parents are divorced, and I lived with her most of the time.â
âHey, Bec? Can you call her and ask?â Chloe suggested.
âSure, I guess.â
Beca called her mother, relieved when she answered quickly. She confirmed that she carried the insurance through her job and said sheâd text a picture of the insurance card right away for Beca to show the pharmacist.
As soon as the picture appeared, Beca handed the phone to the pharmacist. She was amazed when he had put everything through the insurance, filled the prescriptions, and even set her up for automatic refills within less than an hour. Chloe convinced her to buy a pill organizer and keep it where she could find it every morning. She also suggested Beca put reminders in her phone to take her medicine.
âBut, Kimmy JinâŚâ Beca trailed off.
âItâs not her business,â said Chloe. âBesides, she knew enough to recognize you were having some sort of struggle when she called me. Just leave the medicine where youâll see it. Itâs more important that you take your medicine consistently than it is worrying about Kimmy Jinâs opinion.â
Beca sighed. âOkay. Youâre right. She basically gives me the same glare no matter what I do, anyway.â
One day after practice, Becaâs Nintendo 3DS fell out of her bag as she was packing up.
âSo, you like video games?â Chloe asked, pointing to the system.
âYeah,â said Beca.
âMe too.â Chloe reached into her bag and pulled out her own system. âI have a DS lite, though.â
âI got this one for Christmas.â
âHey, do you want to go to the arcade on Saturday?â
âYeah, sounds fun. Whatâs around here?â
âWe have one on campus,â said Chloe. âYou didnât know that?â
âNo.â
âItâs not as big or as fun as Dave and Busterâs, but itâs pretty cool. They have bowling, too, if we want to do that.â
âItâs a date, then,â said Beca, worrying for a brief second that sheâd used the wrong word. She remembered that she and Chloe had declared themselves girlfriends recently.
âAwes,â said Chloe.
Chloe arrived at 8 pm to pick up Beca for their date. Kimmy Jin had several friends over, and they were playing video games.
As they left the dorm room, Chloe said, âIâm so glad you agreed to the arcade on campus. Cab rides are expensive.â
âYou donât have a car?â Beca asked.
Chloe shook her head. âNo. I have a driverâs license, but Iâve never managed to save the money to buy one.â
âI have one, but itâs in Seattle at my momâs.â
âRight. Iâm sure thatâs an expensive transport fee.â
âAnd freshmen arenât allowed to have a car on campus.â
âI forgot about that. I didnât even have my license until the summer before my sophomore year, soâŚâ Chloe trailed off for a brief moment.
âOh, wait, I almost forgot!â Chloe exclaimed abruptly, holding up a finger. âAubrey is at Stacieâs again tonight. No pressure, butâŚâ
Beca smiled. âGive me a sec to pack my bag.â
Beca took Chloeâs hand as they walked to the arcade, chatting lightly.
They walked into the âBarden Unionâ building, and Becaâs eyes widened as she saw what was there.
âHow did I not know this was here? They have Taco Bell!â
Chloe chuckled. âYeah, and Subway. They even take the dining plan.â
âI skipped the campus tour during orientation, and now I wish I hadnât.â
âThey have free movie nights, too.â
Beca wrinkled her nose. âI donât like movies.â
âReally?â
Beca told her what sheâd told Jesse on the quad a few months ago.
âInteresting. Iâll keep that in mind for our next date.â
When they entered the arcade, Chloe purchased game cards for both of them, gently pushing Becaâs hand down as she tried to pay for her own.
They spent an hour or two playing various games, and Beca couldnât help but be amused at how competitive Chloe was, especially when they played racing games.
âWant to play air hockey?â Chloe asked.
âIâm fucking terrible at air hockey.â
Chloe gave Beca the puppy-dog eyes, and Beca found herself at the air hockey table.
Beca hadnât been anywhere near an air hockey table in over a year, and she could count the number of matches sheâd won on one hand. She just couldnât anticipate where the puck was headed, and she frequently knocked it into her own goal.
Playing air hockey with Chloe, however, proved to be far more difficult. Chloe dramatically declared it was âgetting hotâ in there and unbuttoned the top button of her blouse before bending forward, almost sticking her cleavage in Becaâs face.
âWhat are you doing?â asked Beca, smirking.
âPlaying air hockey,â said Chloe, feigning innocence.
Before Beca could reply, Chloe dropped the puck on the table and knocked it straight into the goal.
âNot fair!â Beca exclaimed, chuckling.
As they headed into Chloeâs room, Beca asked, âHow did Aubrey manage to stay at Stacieâs again?â
âStacieâs roommate lives about an hourâs drive from here. She goes home almost every weekend.â
âNice.â
As sheâd done before, Chloe stripped right in the middle of the room. Beca found herself staring.
Chloe caught Becaâs eye and winked. âYouâre free to look, you know. I mean, I know you looked that day in the shower.â
Beca felt her face warm. âYou looked, too!â
âI totes did,â Chloe said, winking.
Beca returned her gaze to her girlfriend, who was standing naked in front of her.
âCome here,â she said. âYou can touch me if you want, too.â
Beca felt Chloe reach behind her and pull her close. They immediately crashed their lips together, stopping only briefly to get some air.
Beca put her arms around Chloe at the small of her back. She soon dragged her left hand up Chloeâs side, and she only hesitated for a moment before taking Chloeâs breast in her hand and gently squeezing it. Chloe moaned into Becaâs mouth, and Beca dragged her other hand up to fondle Chloeâs other breast.
As she continued to kiss Chloe deeply, she felt a hand around her waist lift the hem of her shirt and reach just under, giving it a gentle tug.
âCan I?â she whispered in Becaâs ear.
Beca nodded, and Chloe pulled Becaâs shirt over her head. Chloe palmed Becaâs breasts over her bra until Beca reached behind and unhooked it.
Chloe pulled Beca close, and Beca relished the feeling of her breasts against Chloeâs.
Beca felt Chloeâs hand stroking her back as she lowered herself to take one of Chloeâs breasts in her mouth, listening to her girlfriend sigh with pleasure.
She massaged the other breast while she sucked and licked, discovering Chloeâs favorite spots before switching.
Beca felt Chloeâs hand rake through her hair as she moaned her name.
âUp here,â Chloe said, motioning for Beca to come back up to her level. They locked lips once again, and Beca soon felt Chloeâs hand fumble with the zipper to her jeans. She quickly unzipped them and pulled them and her underwear off.
Beca moaned when she felt Chloe grab her ass.
Before Chloe could ask, she whispered, âAnythingâŚanything you want.â
Chloeâs fingers made their way to where Beca wanted them most, quickly finding her clit.
âDamn, Bec. So wetâŚâ
Beca could only whimper in response.
Beca felt her knees begin to buckle, and Chloe stopped just long enough to lay her on the bed and get back to what she was doing.
A stream of curses mixed with Chloeâs name came out of Becaâs mouth as she had her first orgasm in what had probably been weeks.
âGood?â Chloe asked, giving Beca a small peck on the lips.
âReally good. Itâs been a while. Kimmy Jin almost never leaves our room.â
âWell, then, Iâm happy to help.â Chloe gave Beca a grin and a wink before lowering her face and licking her clit in long strokes, making the still-sensitive Beca jump a bit.
Beca put her hands in Chloeâs hair as her girlfriend licked and sucked, eventually adding a finger inside of her, making Beca come several more times.
âFuck!â Beca swore. âThat wasâŚâ Beca was panting and unable to finish her sentence, but Chloeâs smile told her she didnât need to.
Chloe crawled back up toward Beca, bringing their lips together again. Beca grabbed Chloeâs ass, following the way sheâd started things on her.
Chloe flipped the two of them so Beca was on top and sat back as Beca moved down her body. After teasing Chloeâs clit for a bit with her tongue, she took her entire clit in her mouth and sucked, causing her girlfriend to buck her hips and curse.
âDamn! ThatâsâŚdonât stop!â Beca felt liquid on her chin as Chloe continued to buck and scream her name.
Once Chloe had come down from her orgasm, Beca moved back up to Chloeâs face just before sliding a finger into her girlfriend.
âGod, that feels so good,â Chloe moaned.
Beca felt Chloe reach between her legs, so she parted them a bit. Chloe put a finger inside of Beca, and the two quickly found a matching rhythm that worked for both of them.
âBecaâŚfuck, Iâm so close,â said Chloe.
Beca barely squeaked out a âme tooâ before they simultaneously fell into orgasm.
âYou sure do curse a lot during sex,â said Beca, chuckling.
âSo do you.â
âWell, yeah, but I curse all the time. Iâm not sure Iâve heard it from you before tonight. Itâs kinda hot.â
âFuuuck,â said Chloe, drawing out the word.
âDoes that mean you want to go again?â
âI think Iâm good, actually. We should get some sleep.â
âSounds good,â said Beca.
Chloe reached down to the foot of her bed and pulled a blanket over them.

here's a little thing about moving that's definitely not inspired by recent real life events.
* * *
Beca sets the box down with a grunt, straightening and pushing it to fit against the rest of the boxes better with her foot. She has no idea what Amy put in her box literally labelled "bit and bobs" to make it so heavy, but honestly she's too tired of going through boxes at the moment to find out.
Brushing her hands together, Beca surveys what they've done in apartment so far - if the one room studio they were renting could be considered an apartment, that is. She, Amy, and Chloe had spent the better part of the day unloading the U-Haul they'd driven from Barden to New York, and now the sorting through everything part is making Beca long for more trips up the stairs.
She's successfully managed to separate their boxes into different piles throughout the room: three piles for each of their personal belongings and one for the kitchen. Amy's stuff takes up an entire side of the room, while Chloe's modest stash sits nicely in a corner.
Beca's things consist of three boxes, two duffel bags filled with clothes, and a carry-on with her music equipment.
Somehow, after getting rid of any furniture she'd acquired over the last couple of years, Beca had walked out of college with hardly more than she started with.
Beca stares at her small pile and considers how motivated she's feeling. Upon deciding that more unpacking can wait until after dinner, she slumps onto the couch to stare at the wall for a minute or two.
Amy and Chloe had volunteered to make a food run to reward all their hard work. Beca had opted to stay behind, citing the need for some alone time, leaving her all alone to wonder just what the hell they'd all gotten themselves into.
One of their windows doesn't latch properly, creating a draft over the place where Beca and Chloe will sleep. The walls are spotted with stains that Beca isn't sure will ever come out. Their bathroom is literally in the kitchen. There's a strange smell coming from the closet that makes Beca's nose wrinkle every time she opens it.
Beca leans her elbows on her knees, puts her head in her hands, and tries to take a deep breath.
It was fine. Everything was going to be fine. They could clean, they could light a candle, they could come up with a system for dealing with the kitchen-shower.
The traffic is loud outside the window. A far cry from the quiet street the Bellas' House at Barden resided on.
Beca tries for another deep breath, cheeks puffing out as she exhales. She rubs her eyes with the heels of her palms until she sees spots, then blinks to clear them again.
All the uncertainties keep staring back at her.
Beca's fingers curl around her phone. Without thinking too much about it, she scrolls through her contacts until her thumb presses the call button.
The other end rings five times before it's picked up. "Hey, Bec."
The air leaves Beca's lungs in a shaky exhale. "Hey, Dad."
"Is everything alright? How'd the move go?" There's a hint of surprise in his voice, as if he hadn't been expecting to call. Which is fair, honestly.
"No, yeah, everything's good," she says, tucking her arms in close to herself. "Made it in one piece. We just finished unpacking the truck."
"Good. Well that's- that's good, then," her dad says. There's a moment of awkward silence, and it hits Beca just how little she tries to make small talk with her dad like this, even when they lived in the same city.
"Yeah," Beca says dumbly. She tucks her feet onto the couch and hugs them tight to her chest.
"So how's New York?"
"It's... different," Beca replies hesitantly. "Um, good different, I think. But different."
Her dad chuckles. "Yeah, I get that. I felt that way when I moved to Barden. But you'll get used to, just give it a few days. Maybe invest in a white noise machine to cover up the traffic."
Beca huffs a laugh. "Yeah, maybe. If Amy's snoring doesn't cover it up first."
They share another laugh, and Beca feels the tightness in her chest ease ever so slightly.
"Bet you're glad to be out of Barden, though," her dad ventures. "Seems like you always wanted to move to the big city."
"I grew up in Seattle, Dad," Beca says with an eye roll. "It's not like I grew up in the middle of Wyoming."
"Okay, okay," he concedes. "I mean a city where things are happening, right? Like LA: you always wanted to live there. Isn't New York just a grittier, more compact version of LA?"
Beca snorts. "I think there's a few more differences than that, but sure. I guess I see your point."
"So there you go," he says, and Beca can practically see that annoying side smirk he gets on his face whenever he feels like he just won an argument. "You're on the right path, even if it's in a different place than you imagined. And I'm so proud of you for taking that jump, Bec. Even if I wasn't always supportive of it."
A lump forms in Beca's throat and she finds herself blinking against stinging eyes. "Thanks, Dad," she says, voice tight, then clears her throat and shakes her head. "That, uh, that means a lot."
"It's true," he says kindly. There's another lull in the conversation, this one less awkward than before. "You know, it'll be weird not having you ten minutes away anymore. I won't be able to force you into coming over for dinner once a month."
Beca grins a little. "And I don't know what I'll do without you knocking on the our door to ask if I've done my homework every other week," she teases. "But maybe I can be convinced to video call every once in a while."
"That would be nice," her dad replies, and Beca can tell that he really means it. "So, how's the apartment."
"It's small, and it's got some quirks, but it'll do for now," Beca says, looking around the studio again. "There's this weird smell coming from a closet that makes me kind of want to throw up, though."
"Try baking soda," her dad says. "Or coffee grounds. They should absorb the smell. Or you could put a bar of soap in a sock, I've done that before. Or you could try..."
He continues rambling about ways to get rid of bad smells, and Beca smiles while she listens, leaning her head against the back of the couch, and breathes deeper than she has all day.

New fic alert!! I haven't written for the Pitch Perfect fandom since 2021, which is wild.
Shout out to the regional train system for giving me time to write this fic.
