Chapter 12 is up!
Beca awoke, once again, in Chloe’s arms. She was snuggled close to her girlfriend, not a stitch of clothing between them. Beca could still feel the previous night’s activities in all of the right places. She wouldn’t have minded a repeat in the morning, but Chloe’s phone alarm soon woke the pair.
Beca felt Chloe press a kiss on her shoulder. “Morning,” Chloe said, her voice thick with sleep.
“Hey.”
“Last night was so, so good.”
“It was. I can’t tell you the last time I felt that good, if ever.”
Beca felt Chloe sit upright quickly. “Wait, was that your first time?”
Beca shook her head. “I had a girlfriend in my senior year of high school. We slept together a handful of times. But she never made me feel anywhere near as good as you did last night.”
“Awes,” said Chloe. “You seemed pretty confident, so I figured this wasn’t new. But, you never know, and we probably should have talked about that before sleeping together.”
Beca shrugged. “Morgan and I were each other’s firsts, so I don’t have any idea how the talk goes.”
“Well, if you want to talk numbers, you’re–”
Beca cut her off. “I don’t need to know, do I? I assume you’re clean, right?”
“Oh, totes. I got tested at the health center a few months ago, just in case. Also, I always used condoms with guys, and I’ve never shared any of my sex toys without washing them really well in between.”
Beca’s face warmed at Chloe’s very casual mention of sex toys. “You have…” Beca couldn’t bring herself to say that phrase.
“Bec, come on. After what we did last night, I’m sure you can say it.”
“Sex toys,” she said, hands buried in her face.
“There you go!” Chloe said, in a tone that was way too chipper, in Beca’s opinion, for the situation. “Do you want to try some?”
“Now?”
“Of course not. We have rehearsal in, like, a half hour.”
“Right.” Beca pondered the idea for a moment. “Yeah, sure. You can show me the next time your dorm is free. Or, if by some miracle, mine is free. I swear the entire Korean Student Association has been in my dorm before, and one time, I think at least four people were sitting on my bed.”
“Did you kick them out?”
“No. I tread pretty lightly around Kimmy Jin. I grabbed my laptop and headphones and headed to the library. I found a corner where I could work on my mixes in peace.”
“You can do that in the library?”
“Well, I was a little limited with the lack of soundboard, but, yeah. I triple-checked that the sound from my laptop was coming through my headphones, though, before starting.”
“Gotcha.” Chloe grabbed her phone and looked at the time. “We’d better get dressed. I have some breakfast sandwiches in my fridge we can microwave or some protein bars if that works.”
“I’m good with either.”
The two got dressed, and, thanks to the pair’s unavoidable urge to make out for just a little longer than they should, they grabbed protein bars and ate them on the way to rehearsal.
Aubrey was her usual uptight, bossy self during the rehearsal. She’d chosen that day to review the video of their performance and nitpick it. She called Beca out on her poor “hand heart” shape during “Eternal Flame.” Beca simply nodded and assured her she’d try harder at the next competition. Chloe had opened her mouth to speak up, but she stopped once she noticed Beca’s subtle shake of her head. She didn’t want her well-meaning girlfriend to say too much and out her anxiety attack she’d had before the competition.
The day of the next competition, Chloe headed to Beca’s dorm beforehand to help with her hair. Beca found herself in a fairly calm mood, and her girlfriend appeared to be very relieved.
Beca couldn’t believe her ears when she heard her mix of “Bulletproof” and “Release Me” playing on the campus radio station that was playing on the outdoor speakers. She took off running toward the station.
“Hey!” she yelled at Luke, who was in the DJ booth, unable to hear her. She banged on the window. “This is my track! You’re playing my song right now! That is awesome! You like it? You put it on the radio! That is amazing!” She was so excited, and she didn’t even care that Luke probably thought she sounded ridiculous.
“Sick beat,” said Luke.
“Yeah, I always thought her beats were pretty sick,” said Jesse from the second level of the station.
“Hey, Becky, listen, spring break, I want you to take the night shift. Play your music. The deejay at ‘The Garage’ does a brilliant mix of this song as well, but yours? It’s better,” said Luke.
“Yeah, it is,” said Beca, feeling cocky.
“I’m going to listen to her tonight. I think you should come with,” said Luke.
“I have a thing,” said Beca.
She saw Luke look her over. “Flight attendant training?”
“Yeah, that’s it. I’m practicing saying, ‘Coffee, tea, pillow?’” Beca waited for a beat. “No, I’m a Barden Bella. Tonight’s the semi-finals.”
“Really?” asked Luke. “I did not have you pegged as an a cappella girl.”
“That’s ‘cause you don’t know Becky like I do,” said Jesse. He turned to Beca. “See you tonight.” He walked out the door of the radio station, carrying his Trebles jacket with him.
Beca stood outside the booth, smiling. Part of her couldn’t believe Luke had finally played one of her mixes.
Just as the song ended, Chloe came to the radio station. “Come on, Beca, let’s go. I convinced Aubrey to let you stay at the station until your song is over, but she’s going to lose her shit if you don’t head to the bus.”
As they walked over to the bus, Beca saw Benji by the Trebles’ bus, begging them to bring him with them.
"Can I hitch a ride? I’d take my car, but...I don’t have one,” said Benji.
“Benji, I’m sorry,” said Jesse. “I think only Trebles can ride the bus. It’s pretty much a rule.”
“Of course. Good luck tonight,” said Benji
Beca shot Jesse a look. “Can’t you do something to help him?”
Jesse sighed, reached into his pocket, and tossed his car keys to Benji, which he did not catch. “Be careful with her, okay?”
Benji nodded as he retrieved the keys from the ground. “Thanks, Jesse,” Benji said, and his face lit up like a Christmas tree.
Fat Amy pulled the bus into a gas station. “Don’t you flat-butts worry, I’ve got this. I’m just going to pump and dump.”
“I did not need to know that,” said Beca.
The Bellas were chatting on the bus when they heard Amy yell, “I’ve been shot! I’ve just been shot! Help me!” from behind the bus.
Cynthia Rose was the first off the bus, followed closely by Beca and Lilly.
When Beca came around, Amy was sitting up. “I’m sitting up. I’m talking; there’s no need for mouth-to-mouth.”
“What happened?” Beca asked.
“Bumper threw a big-ass burrito at me! I’m going to kill him, I swear. I’m going to finish him like a cheesecake.”
“Okay, Amy, let’s get back on the bus,” said Beca. “Let’s find you a clean shirt.”
They got on the bus, and Beca explained what had happened.
“It’s a good thing I insisted everyone bring a spare uniform,” said Aubrey. “Put that on, and let’s get back on the road.”
Beca looked at Amy and noticed there was a little bit of burrito just behind her ear. She got up from her seat next to Chloe and moved to the empty one behind Amy.
She quietly said, “You’ve got yourself a little something there.”
“Just leave it,” Amy replied. “It fuels my hate fire.”
Just as Beca sat down, Chloe began to sing.
I hopped off the plane at LAX with a dream and my cardigan
Cynthia Rose joined her.
Welcome to the land of fame excess Am I gonna fit in?
The next thing she knew, the rest of the group joined in, some of them even doing the a cappella version of the instrumentation. She folded her arms and refused.
Jumped in the cab, Here I am for the first time Look to my right and I see the Hollywood sign This is all so crazy Everybody seems so famous
Beca said, “This is lame.”
My tummy's turnin' and I'm feelin' kinda homesick Too much pressure and I'm nervous, That's when the taxi man turned on the radio And the Jay-Z song was on And the Jay-Z song was on And the Jay-Z song was on
The entire group was looking at Beca, urging her to join in. Chloe said, “I know you know it, Beca.”
Beca continued to fold her arms across her chest, but she could feel her resolve cracking.
“Beca…” Chloe said, giving her the puppy-dog eyes.
So I put my hands up They're playing my song, And the butterflies fly away
They continued the rest of the chorus until they heard the bus sputter to a stop. Amy announced that they’d run out of gas. Apparently, she hadn’t managed to fill up the tank when they’d stopped due to the flying Mexican food.
Aubrey initially refused when Chloe began to suggest they call the Trebles, and Beca couldn’t help but laugh just a little when Fat Amy refused to explain why she had Bumper’s number in her phone. Even Aubrey couldn’t think of another way to get to the competition, so she begrudgingly agreed.
Once they got on the Trebles’ bus, the Bellas all sat on one side, the Trebles on the other. Nobody spoke for the first few minutes, aside from Chloe thanking Donald for picking them up.
“So, Bellas, what boring, estrogen-filled set have you prepared for us this evening?” asked Bumper.
“Umm, excuse me,” said Fat Amy. “But you guys are going to get pitch-slapped so hard, your man boobs are going to concave.”
“Gentleman, I believe we were in the middle of our warm-up,” said Bumper. He blew the pitch pipe before singing, “You can suck my balls,” in a scale pattern.
The Trebles echoed him.
Not to be outdone, Fat Amy responded with, “You can lick my ass” in the same scale pattern.
The Bellas echoed her, and the groups tried to outdo each other until the bus screeched to a halt at the parking lot of the auditorium of the school hosting the semi-finals.

CHAPTER FIVE—JESSE SWANSON
RATING: M
PAIRING: Multi (w/ Bechloe end game)
SUMMARY:
The story of how Beca and Chloe both find “the One” (AKA each other) (AKA the Love Life AU that no one asked for)
I’m sure that you were expecting this one at some point, reader. After all, we sort of know how this one goes. In short: acapella boy meets acapella girl, they date for three years in college, and they do not go on to have aca-children.
“I think that Jesse likes me,” she supplies nonchalantly. She’s not really sure what drives her to say something, especially because it’s so not like her to open up to people, but there’s something about Chloe that makes her feel safe enough to tear down those walls just a little bit.
Chloe lets out an incredulous laugh at this confession.
“I could have told you that at the beginning of the year,” Chloe scoffs. “I can’t believe that you’re just now figuring this out, Bec.”
She blushes at the term of endearment and her own denseness.
“I’m just…I don’t know, people don’t usually like me like that,” she says, feeling insecure in the moment. “I’m not like you, Chloe, people don’t usually fall all over themselves for me like they do you.”
Chloe rolls her eyes.
“Yes they do, you just don’t notice,” she reassures Beca. “You’re kind of hot. And I should know because I’ve seen—”
“Oh my god, dude!” Beca interjects, cheeks burning up with embarrassment at the memory of what they refer to as The Shower Incident. “I wish you would just let that go already it’s so embarrassing.”
Chloe just laughs, shaking her head.
“Quit deflecting, let’s talk more about Jesse."

Chapter 11 is up!
Beca awoke, initially wondering who had their arms around her. She smiled when she remembered it was Chloe. Her joy was short-lived when Chloe’s phone alarm rang a minute or two later.
She felt Chloe press a kiss to her neck and then said in a tone far too cheerful for 7:00 on a Sunday morning, “Rise and shine, Beca!”
Beca turned to face her and said, “You’re lucky you’re that pretty.”
“Hey, Becs, do you have anything to eat? We don’t have time to hit the dining hall before practice.”
Beca reached into one of her bottom desk drawers and produced a box of Pop-Tarts. “Here, I still have most of a box my mom bought in bulk over the semester break.”
“Nice.” Chloe flipped through the packs before deciding on the strawberry flavor. “I think I need to head back to my room and get something to wear for practice.”
“And catch Posen and Conrad banging? Eww. Go ahead and grab whatever from my closet. I’m not that much shorter than you are.”
Beca grabbed some clothing for herself before going through her closet again and selecting a few things that she thought might fit her girlfriend. She smiled as she thought that word in her head again: “girlfriend.”
“What are you smiling about?” asked Chloe as Beca handed her some clothing.
“My amazing girlfriend.”
Chloe kissed Beca on the cheek before stepping away and getting dressed.
Beca and Chloe ate their Pop-Tarts as they headed to practice, Beca making sure to put her pill bottles into her bag.
The practice was more of the same: Aubrey barking orders and Fat Amy improvising her solo. Beca thought Amy’s improvisations were generally better than the stuffy, stiff choreography she was supposed to perform.
Beca snickered to herself, remembering the text Aubrey had sent Chloe. She supposed that getting some action from Stacie hadn’t been enough to calm down the captain.
As promised, Chloe took Beca to the pharmacy near the campus after practice. Beca wasn’t surprised in the least that the pharmacist knew Chloe by name.
“So, what can I do for you today, Chloe? I don’t think you’re due for a refill yet.”
Beca saw Chloe look at her expectantly, but she didn’t know what to say.
Chloe spoke for Beca after a beat. “Chuck, this is my girlfriend, Beca. She needs help transferring her prescriptions.”
“Do you have your pill bottles?” he asked.
Beca rummaged in her bag and produced all four bottles.
“Great. Do you have your insurance card?”
“No. I’ve never actually done this before. My mom always did it back at home,” said Beca, feeling her cheeks warm.
Chuck smiled back at her. “That’s okay. Most of my Barden students haven’t done this either. Do you know which of your parents carries the insurance?”
Beca shrugged. “My mom, maybe? My parents are divorced, and I lived with her most of the time.”
“Hey, Bec? Can you call her and ask?” Chloe suggested.
“Sure, I guess.”
Beca called her mother, relieved when she answered quickly. She confirmed that she carried the insurance through her job and said she’d text a picture of the insurance card right away for Beca to show the pharmacist.
As soon as the picture appeared, Beca handed the phone to the pharmacist. She was amazed when he had put everything through the insurance, filled the prescriptions, and even set her up for automatic refills within less than an hour. Chloe convinced her to buy a pill organizer and keep it where she could find it every morning. She also suggested Beca put reminders in her phone to take her medicine.
“But, Kimmy Jin…” Beca trailed off.
“It’s not her business,” said Chloe. “Besides, she knew enough to recognize you were having some sort of struggle when she called me. Just leave the medicine where you’ll see it. It’s more important that you take your medicine consistently than it is worrying about Kimmy Jin’s opinion.”
Beca sighed. “Okay. You’re right. She basically gives me the same glare no matter what I do, anyway.”
One day after practice, Beca’s Nintendo 3DS fell out of her bag as she was packing up.
“So, you like video games?” Chloe asked, pointing to the system.
“Yeah,” said Beca.
“Me too.” Chloe reached into her bag and pulled out her own system. “I have a DS lite, though.”
“I got this one for Christmas.”
“Hey, do you want to go to the arcade on Saturday?”
“Yeah, sounds fun. What’s around here?”
“We have one on campus,” said Chloe. “You didn’t know that?”
“No.”
“It’s not as big or as fun as Dave and Buster’s, but it’s pretty cool. They have bowling, too, if we want to do that.”
“It’s a date, then,” said Beca, worrying for a brief second that she’d used the wrong word. She remembered that she and Chloe had declared themselves girlfriends recently.
“Awes,” said Chloe.
Chloe arrived at 8 pm to pick up Beca for their date. Kimmy Jin had several friends over, and they were playing video games.
As they left the dorm room, Chloe said, “I’m so glad you agreed to the arcade on campus. Cab rides are expensive.”
“You don’t have a car?” Beca asked.
Chloe shook her head. “No. I have a driver’s license, but I’ve never managed to save the money to buy one.”
“I have one, but it’s in Seattle at my mom’s.”
“Right. I’m sure that’s an expensive transport fee.”
“And freshmen aren’t allowed to have a car on campus.”
“I forgot about that. I didn’t even have my license until the summer before my sophomore year, so…” Chloe trailed off for a brief moment.
“Oh, wait, I almost forgot!” Chloe exclaimed abruptly, holding up a finger. “Aubrey is at Stacie’s again tonight. No pressure, but…”
Beca smiled. “Give me a sec to pack my bag.”
Beca took Chloe’s hand as they walked to the arcade, chatting lightly.
They walked into the “Barden Union” building, and Beca’s eyes widened as she saw what was there.
“How did I not know this was here? They have Taco Bell!”
Chloe chuckled. “Yeah, and Subway. They even take the dining plan.”
“I skipped the campus tour during orientation, and now I wish I hadn’t.”
“They have free movie nights, too.”
Beca wrinkled her nose. “I don’t like movies.”
“Really?”
Beca told her what she’d told Jesse on the quad a few months ago.
“Interesting. I’ll keep that in mind for our next date.”
When they entered the arcade, Chloe purchased game cards for both of them, gently pushing Beca’s hand down as she tried to pay for her own.
They spent an hour or two playing various games, and Beca couldn’t help but be amused at how competitive Chloe was, especially when they played racing games.
“Want to play air hockey?” Chloe asked.
“I’m fucking terrible at air hockey.”
Chloe gave Beca the puppy-dog eyes, and Beca found herself at the air hockey table.
Beca hadn’t been anywhere near an air hockey table in over a year, and she could count the number of matches she’d won on one hand. She just couldn’t anticipate where the puck was headed, and she frequently knocked it into her own goal.
Playing air hockey with Chloe, however, proved to be far more difficult. Chloe dramatically declared it was “getting hot” in there and unbuttoned the top button of her blouse before bending forward, almost sticking her cleavage in Beca’s face.
“What are you doing?” asked Beca, smirking.
“Playing air hockey,” said Chloe, feigning innocence.
Before Beca could reply, Chloe dropped the puck on the table and knocked it straight into the goal.
“Not fair!” Beca exclaimed, chuckling.
As they headed into Chloe’s room, Beca asked, “How did Aubrey manage to stay at Stacie’s again?”
“Stacie’s roommate lives about an hour’s drive from here. She goes home almost every weekend.”
“Nice.”
As she’d done before, Chloe stripped right in the middle of the room. Beca found herself staring.
Chloe caught Beca’s eye and winked. “You’re free to look, you know. I mean, I know you looked that day in the shower.”
Beca felt her face warm. “You looked, too!”
“I totes did,” Chloe said, winking.
Beca returned her gaze to her girlfriend, who was standing naked in front of her.
“Come here,” she said. “You can touch me if you want, too.”
Beca felt Chloe reach behind her and pull her close. They immediately crashed their lips together, stopping only briefly to get some air.
Beca put her arms around Chloe at the small of her back. She soon dragged her left hand up Chloe’s side, and she only hesitated for a moment before taking Chloe’s breast in her hand and gently squeezing it. Chloe moaned into Beca’s mouth, and Beca dragged her other hand up to fondle Chloe’s other breast.
As she continued to kiss Chloe deeply, she felt a hand around her waist lift the hem of her shirt and reach just under, giving it a gentle tug.
“Can I?” she whispered in Beca’s ear.
Beca nodded, and Chloe pulled Beca’s shirt over her head. Chloe palmed Beca’s breasts over her bra until Beca reached behind and unhooked it.
Chloe pulled Beca close, and Beca relished the feeling of her breasts against Chloe’s.
Beca felt Chloe’s hand stroking her back as she lowered herself to take one of Chloe’s breasts in her mouth, listening to her girlfriend sigh with pleasure.
She massaged the other breast while she sucked and licked, discovering Chloe’s favorite spots before switching.
Beca felt Chloe’s hand rake through her hair as she moaned her name.
“Up here,” Chloe said, motioning for Beca to come back up to her level. They locked lips once again, and Beca soon felt Chloe’s hand fumble with the zipper to her jeans. She quickly unzipped them and pulled them and her underwear off.
Beca moaned when she felt Chloe grab her ass.
Before Chloe could ask, she whispered, “Anything…anything you want.”
Chloe’s fingers made their way to where Beca wanted them most, quickly finding her clit.
“Damn, Bec. So wet…”
Beca could only whimper in response.
Beca felt her knees begin to buckle, and Chloe stopped just long enough to lay her on the bed and get back to what she was doing.
A stream of curses mixed with Chloe’s name came out of Beca’s mouth as she had her first orgasm in what had probably been weeks.
“Good?” Chloe asked, giving Beca a small peck on the lips.
“Really good. It’s been a while. Kimmy Jin almost never leaves our room.”
“Well, then, I’m happy to help.” Chloe gave Beca a grin and a wink before lowering her face and licking her clit in long strokes, making the still-sensitive Beca jump a bit.
Beca put her hands in Chloe’s hair as her girlfriend licked and sucked, eventually adding a finger inside of her, making Beca come several more times.
“Fuck!” Beca swore. “That was…” Beca was panting and unable to finish her sentence, but Chloe’s smile told her she didn’t need to.
Chloe crawled back up toward Beca, bringing their lips together again. Beca grabbed Chloe’s ass, following the way she’d started things on her.
Chloe flipped the two of them so Beca was on top and sat back as Beca moved down her body. After teasing Chloe’s clit for a bit with her tongue, she took her entire clit in her mouth and sucked, causing her girlfriend to buck her hips and curse.
“Damn! That’s…don’t stop!” Beca felt liquid on her chin as Chloe continued to buck and scream her name.
Once Chloe had come down from her orgasm, Beca moved back up to Chloe’s face just before sliding a finger into her girlfriend.
“God, that feels so good,” Chloe moaned.
Beca felt Chloe reach between her legs, so she parted them a bit. Chloe put a finger inside of Beca, and the two quickly found a matching rhythm that worked for both of them.
“Beca…fuck, I’m so close,” said Chloe.
Beca barely squeaked out a “me too” before they simultaneously fell into orgasm.
“You sure do curse a lot during sex,” said Beca, chuckling.
“So do you.”
“Well, yeah, but I curse all the time. I’m not sure I’ve heard it from you before tonight. It’s kinda hot.”
“Fuuuck,” said Chloe, drawing out the word.
“Does that mean you want to go again?”
“I think I’m good, actually. We should get some sleep.”
“Sounds good,” said Beca.
Chloe reached down to the foot of her bed and pulled a blanket over them.

here's a little thing about moving that's definitely not inspired by recent real life events.
* * *
Beca sets the box down with a grunt, straightening and pushing it to fit against the rest of the boxes better with her foot. She has no idea what Amy put in her box literally labelled "bit and bobs" to make it so heavy, but honestly she's too tired of going through boxes at the moment to find out.
Brushing her hands together, Beca surveys what they've done in apartment so far - if the one room studio they were renting could be considered an apartment, that is. She, Amy, and Chloe had spent the better part of the day unloading the U-Haul they'd driven from Barden to New York, and now the sorting through everything part is making Beca long for more trips up the stairs.
She's successfully managed to separate their boxes into different piles throughout the room: three piles for each of their personal belongings and one for the kitchen. Amy's stuff takes up an entire side of the room, while Chloe's modest stash sits nicely in a corner.
Beca's things consist of three boxes, two duffel bags filled with clothes, and a carry-on with her music equipment.
Somehow, after getting rid of any furniture she'd acquired over the last couple of years, Beca had walked out of college with hardly more than she started with.
Beca stares at her small pile and considers how motivated she's feeling. Upon deciding that more unpacking can wait until after dinner, she slumps onto the couch to stare at the wall for a minute or two.
Amy and Chloe had volunteered to make a food run to reward all their hard work. Beca had opted to stay behind, citing the need for some alone time, leaving her all alone to wonder just what the hell they'd all gotten themselves into.
One of their windows doesn't latch properly, creating a draft over the place where Beca and Chloe will sleep. The walls are spotted with stains that Beca isn't sure will ever come out. Their bathroom is literally in the kitchen. There's a strange smell coming from the closet that makes Beca's nose wrinkle every time she opens it.
Beca leans her elbows on her knees, puts her head in her hands, and tries to take a deep breath.
It was fine. Everything was going to be fine. They could clean, they could light a candle, they could come up with a system for dealing with the kitchen-shower.
The traffic is loud outside the window. A far cry from the quiet street the Bellas' House at Barden resided on.
Beca tries for another deep breath, cheeks puffing out as she exhales. She rubs her eyes with the heels of her palms until she sees spots, then blinks to clear them again.
All the uncertainties keep staring back at her.
Beca's fingers curl around her phone. Without thinking too much about it, she scrolls through her contacts until her thumb presses the call button.
The other end rings five times before it's picked up. "Hey, Bec."
The air leaves Beca's lungs in a shaky exhale. "Hey, Dad."
"Is everything alright? How'd the move go?" There's a hint of surprise in his voice, as if he hadn't been expecting to call. Which is fair, honestly.
"No, yeah, everything's good," she says, tucking her arms in close to herself. "Made it in one piece. We just finished unpacking the truck."
"Good. Well that's- that's good, then," her dad says. There's a moment of awkward silence, and it hits Beca just how little she tries to make small talk with her dad like this, even when they lived in the same city.
"Yeah," Beca says dumbly. She tucks her feet onto the couch and hugs them tight to her chest.
"So how's New York?"
"It's... different," Beca replies hesitantly. "Um, good different, I think. But different."
Her dad chuckles. "Yeah, I get that. I felt that way when I moved to Barden. But you'll get used to, just give it a few days. Maybe invest in a white noise machine to cover up the traffic."
Beca huffs a laugh. "Yeah, maybe. If Amy's snoring doesn't cover it up first."
They share another laugh, and Beca feels the tightness in her chest ease ever so slightly.
"Bet you're glad to be out of Barden, though," her dad ventures. "Seems like you always wanted to move to the big city."
"I grew up in Seattle, Dad," Beca says with an eye roll. "It's not like I grew up in the middle of Wyoming."
"Okay, okay," he concedes. "I mean a city where things are happening, right? Like LA: you always wanted to live there. Isn't New York just a grittier, more compact version of LA?"
Beca snorts. "I think there's a few more differences than that, but sure. I guess I see your point."
"So there you go," he says, and Beca can practically see that annoying side smirk he gets on his face whenever he feels like he just won an argument. "You're on the right path, even if it's in a different place than you imagined. And I'm so proud of you for taking that jump, Bec. Even if I wasn't always supportive of it."
A lump forms in Beca's throat and she finds herself blinking against stinging eyes. "Thanks, Dad," she says, voice tight, then clears her throat and shakes her head. "That, uh, that means a lot."
"It's true," he says kindly. There's another lull in the conversation, this one less awkward than before. "You know, it'll be weird not having you ten minutes away anymore. I won't be able to force you into coming over for dinner once a month."
Beca grins a little. "And I don't know what I'll do without you knocking on the our door to ask if I've done my homework every other week," she teases. "But maybe I can be convinced to video call every once in a while."
"That would be nice," her dad replies, and Beca can tell that he really means it. "So, how's the apartment."
"It's small, and it's got some quirks, but it'll do for now," Beca says, looking around the studio again. "There's this weird smell coming from a closet that makes me kind of want to throw up, though."
"Try baking soda," her dad says. "Or coffee grounds. They should absorb the smell. Or you could put a bar of soap in a sock, I've done that before. Or you could try..."
He continues rambling about ways to get rid of bad smells, and Beca smiles while she listens, leaning her head against the back of the couch, and breathes deeper than she has all day.

Summary:
Beca hates everything about her life in New York City. She hates her job, the apartment she lives in is falling apart, and she hates the city in general.
The one thing she didn't hate about New York... was Chloe. The one good thing that she's got.
New fic alert!! I haven't written for the Pitch Perfect fandom since 2021, which is wild.
Shout out to the regional train system for giving me time to write this fic.
