Craftworks Cambodia's insight:
The people of Cambodia have endured a great deal in a span of time shorter than my lifetime. Here is a very brief history; after the Vietnam War spread to Cambodia, the communist Khmer Rouge regime took power. What followed was years of devastation, mass killings, torture and fear. From 1975 to 1979, led by the Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot, there was a reign of terror in this small country. In 4 years, nearly 2 million Cambodians were murdered. Under the government that followed a full pardon was given to all members of the Khmer Rouge for the genocide and atrocities they had committed, this was a slap in the face to the surviving Cambodian People. In 1993, a mere 20 years ago, peace came to Cambodia. Since then, the country has struggled to find growth and prosperity while surrounded by the remnants of war, the rule of a dictator and a communist government. The endless list of challenges they still face include land mines, extreme poverty, lack of infrastructure, lack of jobs and a population left deeply wounded both physically and psychologically. We also have a brilliant selection of bags made from recycled materials, which make ideal gifts for people who love all things earth-friendly. Each bag is crafted by hand in an ethical manner under the Fair Trade Cambodia initiative. Beautifully made, fair-trade and environmentally friendly. You can't get better than that! www.craftworkscambodia.com

Jewellery Made From Recycled Bomb Casing Heart Pattern Cuffs
Towards Fair trade Cambodia.Jewellery Made From Recycled Brass Bomb Casing Heart Pattern Cuffs handmade ethically disadvantaged home based women and men artisans. www.craftworkscambodia.com
Brass jewellery hand made from bombshells that helps transform the scars of war into the beauty of peace. After two decades of war, one in every 250 Cambodians is disabled and the proportion of amputees - one in every 384 people - is the highest in the world.
The Cambodian countryside is littered with bomb casings. Crafts men and women use the brass bombshells to create fashionable jewellery, statements for peace. This symbolic jewellery takes the scars of a country's horrific history and turns them into something beautiful while at the same time offering a more positive future for the artisans, as well as the direct victims of landmines. The jewellery shows a creative reaction to violent conflict, a way of reminding us of the impressive strength that lies within so many.

Toward Fair Trade Cambodia, Golden Cocoon Silk pattern shawl Scarf, ethically handwoven by disadvantaged home based weavers. www.craftworkscambodia.com
Cambodian culture has a long been associated with the production of silk and fine silk fabrics such as those used in these scarves. The Cambodian silk industry has survived the country’s political unrest and civil war and is now very much alive. It is generally believed that growing mulberry plants, silk worm breeding and silk weaving was introduced to Cambodia in the 13th century. Then, in the late 19th century and continuing through the two World Wars, sericulture ( silk farming ) developed even further. World War II caused a shortage of fabric in European countries, which consequently accelerated its growth in Cambodia. Mulberry plantations reportedly covered a total of five to six thousand hectares, and yarn production eventually reached 150 tons per year at the end of World War II. At that time, 10 to 30 percent of families worked in this golden silk industry; Women bred silk worms and wove their cloth for traditional skirts, shirts. These fine garments were especially favored by Royal families and dignitary. Now these beautiful garments are worn by many Cambodian ladies and men at traditional weddings or special events. The techniques of mulberry growing, breeding the silk worms and weaving the yarn were passed from one generation to the next and from mother to daughter Young girls learned sericulture by helping with those tasks of which they were capable. By the time they were about 12 years old, when their mothers felt that they had the skills they needed and if there were enough mulberry trees to sustain a second batch, these girls tried their own hand at breeding worms and weaving The, Golden Cocoon Silk Collection , is inspired by the local organic silk which is hand-dyed and hand-woven using only natural dyes/colors. The communities for this collection is the only revival area of the Golden silk yarn production in Cambodia. www.craftworkscambodia.compty description
