"We shut down the economy because of a virus with a 99% survival rate."
First of all, a 99% survival rate is extremely dangerous. And these assholes know that, because they'd never take a vaccine with a 99% survival rate, or even a 99.9999% survival rate.
But also, we didn't shut down the economy. We prioritized the economy.
Do you really think that having no restrictions would mean that life continues as normal? What about businesses having to shut down because their customers are choosing to stay home? What about businesses whose employees quit because they know that the medical bills from a COVID hospitalization would be more than they'd make by working?
The effect on the economy would have been worse without the temporary restrictions. The restrictions were lifted as soon as doing so became good for the economy.

The woman at the small boutique says she can’t afford to lose money “in this economy.” The nurse at the doctor’s office for my mom’s back complains that they’re in need of workers and that “everyone’s complaining about money, but no one wants to work!” The local McDonald’s line barely moves because there are barely any workers. I see a headline that says there’s an abnormally high amount of unhoused people in California, as if there’s a “normal” amount of unhoused people there can be. My sister wants a new house but can’t buy one because it’s all so expensive. A Wendy’s worker online complains about how everything is going up in price except their wages. All this is happening around me and I’m powerless to stop it. I don’t want to act like I have the secret that others are unable to see, but I can’t help but think everyone has been brainwashed until thinking we have to live like this. There just has to be a recession every ten years, there just has to be constantly changing gas prices, there just has to be bad seasons for buying a house. We have to deal with this as the price of freedom, we have no other choice. But I think we do have another choice, and I think even if there’s not answers to every question about how this ‘other choice’ would work, we have to try. We can’t live like this anymore. We just can’t. People are being killed by this.
