But 2020 is a hell of a year, and that was our journey back to Noble Rot. THE REPORT Name: Noble Rot. Location: The most perfect street in the world. What we’ve said before: “Everything from the food, to the atmosphere, to the cartoons in the toilets is spot on. Noble Rot calls itself a wine bar and restaurant but it feels more like a public member’s club, if there is such a thing.” Wow. It sounds like you want to marry this place? Sure, yeah, why not? If Tracy Emin married a rock in her garden, then we may as well go all in with Noble Rot. We love it. Yep, we said it. I’m so happy for you. And how was it being indoors? Thanks. Everything felt the same, but different. We sat in the front bar area (which is now booking-only) in one of the banquettes, and had lots of space. It was also 5:45pm because we’d left the plants with a sitter and were feeling nervy. There were quite a few tables taken out, so it was positively roomy. All the staff wore masks and, all in all, it felt 99% as comfortable and natural as it always does. The champagne probably (definitely) helped. It does that, doesn’t it? Yup, especially when combined with the best bread plate in London. The best bread in London? Yes, yes, and yes. Three types of bread, six slices of pure, unadulterated, comfort. The sourdough, soda, and focaccia is an impolite plate of carbs. And we’re not talking in calorific terms. We’re talking in greedy, grabby terms. This bread is so good that British niceties go out of the window. The focaccia and the soda, in particular, are so perfect, so moist, that your eyes will well if the last pieces don’t find their way into your needy pie hole. Oi oi. How about the rest? We decided to go pescetarian, so it was more ahoy ahoy. [silence] Anyway, yeah, a hot, early summer’s evening - fish. Specifically the signature slip sole with smoked butter. Smoky, soft, superb. Apologies for the alliteration. There was smoked mackerel with a celeriac remoulade too - an ideal sourdough vehicle if we’ve ever seen or eaten one. In between was a deity-like ball of burratina, surrounded by sweet, adoring tomatoes. And for main: monkfish on Provençal pistou. Jake Missing Pistou? Bless you. No, pistou? Oh. Pistou is a garlic-heavy sauce. But this was more of a cold summery soup, full of herbs and peas and perfect little cubes of potato and carrot. It was completely delicious and utterly anti-social. Green bits in our teeth, breath ponging. Truly the food of summer 2020. And what was it like when you left? Busier, but not that busy. Buzzing, but also not as buzzing as usual. Nowhere is going to be quite the same: that’s just the nature of metres and masks. But we’ve spent a lot of time inside and outside of Noble Rot, and the most noticeable thing was how happy everyone was to be back. So you can take comfort in knowing your oysters will stay safe in case one of those scattered thunderstorms decides to scatter itself all over you. Reservations are suggested and you can call [phone] to make one. Tasty Planet Amara At Paraiso $$$$ Seafood  in  Edgewater $$$$ 3101 NE 7TH AVE. Not all of Amara’s outdoor space is covered, but the bulk of their waterfront tables do have a roof above them. Just be sure to make a reservation so you know you’ll have one of those tables, and order with confidence. Pretty much all the seafood here is very good. La Camaronera Fish Market $$$$ Latin ,  Seafood ,  Cuban  in  Little Havana $$$$ 1952 W Flagler St Little Havana’s La Camaronera has set up what looks like a small stage outside the little seafood restaurant. Except instead of a band, the headliners here are the best fried shrimp in town and that lovely pan con minuta. The dining area is covered by a tent and has some fans too, in case you’re worried about sweating on your fried lobster. Tasty Planet Andiamo Brick Oven Pizza $$$$ Pizza  in  MiMo $$$$ 5600 Biscayne Blvd The MiMo pizza spot is mostly safe from storms thanks to its wide roof. They’ve also recently added some additional outdoor seating, so you shouldn’t have a problem getting a table here. Reservations aren’t required. Being in the mood for pizza, however, kind of is. Maybe it’s not the best spot if there’s a lot of rain in the forecast, but if all you’re worried about are some quick little showers, you should be fine here. They have things like fried chicken, snapper ceviche, and grilled empanadas. The outdoor space is covered and shaded too. Reservations are available online. Matador Room $$$$ 2901 Collins Ave If you want to put on real clothes again or just happen to miss hotels, the Matador Room inside Mid-Beach’s Edition Hotel is open. This place has a lot of covered outdoor seating and a view of the pool. It’s a solid spot for a fancy dinner or a business lunch if your coworker is still scared to use Zoom after accidentally leaving the mic on while they went to the bathroom. Emily Schindler Taurus $$$$ Bar Food ,  Bar  in  Coconut Grove $$$$ 3540 Main Hwy Coconut Grove’s Taurus recently underwent some changes - it’s now more of a sit-down restaurant than a bar. However, it’s still a great place to sit outside with a drink, oysters, chicken wings, and a burger. Most of their patio seating is covered, so you should be good if the skies decide to open up too. Le Chick $$$$ American  in  Wynwood $$$$ 310 NW 24th St Le Chick’s outdoor patio has a retractable awning, so if it starts raining, all someone needs to do is push a button and you won’t have to grab your rotisserie chicken (or their very good cheeseburger) and run for cover. They’ve been an off-menu, not-so-secret but secret staple of the upscale Southern restaurant’s success. They’ve spawned a hashtag that has been used by everyone from Emeril Lagasse to Jimmy Kimmel as a means of professing biscuit love. And now, Olamaie has started a biscuit-based takeout business - called Little Ola’s - as an answer to current uncertainty about in-restaurant dining. This means you can now enjoy their biscuits with house-made honey butter from your living room (or, in our case, from the car just outside of the parking lot). In addition to the standard biscuits, there’s a full menu of biscuit-based sandwiches, with things like country ham and cheese, or a deep-fried chicken thigh. There are a few sides available if you want to round out your meal with some corn salad or potato chips, as well as desserts, cocktails, beer, and wine. Food Rundown Nicolai McCrary Sausage, Egg & Cheese Biscuit Perhaps the most breakfast-y of the biscuit sandwiches we tried, the sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit is what you want to wake up to in the morning. It’s a sandwich that starts its day knowing exactly what it wants to be, and pulling it off every step of the way. Nicolai McCrary Country Ham & Cheese Biscuit Ham and cheese is one of the most classic sandwich combinations there is, so it’s unsurprising that the same combo works so well in biscuit-form. Thinly-shaved slices of cured and smoked country ham are covered in melted cheddar before finding their home in a biscuit that manages to balance a crunchy, salty exterior with a soft and buttery inside. This was probably our favorite of the bunch. Nicolai McCrary Fried Chicken Biscuit Whataburger fans, rejoice - a ramped-up version of everyone’s favorite Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit now exists. Don’t get us wrong, we love the classic for late-night eats and Sunday morning hangovers, but Little Ola’s take on it is on a different playing field. Here, a deep-fried Dewberry Farms chicken thigh gets dressed with local honey and served on a buttery biscuit. You’ll find the word “jawn” more times on these trendy restaurants’ menus than the word “entree,” and it’s almost a requirement that they make some kind of cheesesteak, roast pork sandwich, or incorporate long hots into a dish. But Kensington BBQ spot Zig Zag somehow manages to be effortlessly cool and inherently Philly without any of these usual gimmicks. And they also happen to make some incredible smoked meat sandwiches and sides. There are a few standouts from Zig Zag’s menu of BBQ options. The first is the brisket sandwich - or sammish, as they call it - that’s covered in queso and is so tender it falls apart in your mouth. It’s ridiculously messy, but it’s the best thing they serve. The “TurkEY TEaseR” (yes, that’s actually how they spell it) is the other sandwich that we’ve been writing about in our diary as if it’s our third-grade crush. It’s got juicy, smoky turkey breast, tangy slaw, pickles, and just enough chili oil to give it a kick. Add on a couple of sides, like the esquites or the Sichuan cucumber salad, and this is an excellent meal that’s quickly become our favorite new takeout option of the summer. Esquites Creamy, sweet corn in a cup is the perfect accompaniment to any of their sandwiches. Get a small for yourself, or a large and share with your roommates. Actually, better idea, just get a large and eat it for your next three meals. Sichuan Style Cuke Salad When you decide you should probably add something healthy to your order, head for the cukes.
