Critical Evaluation - Final Group Project
youtube
Here is the final edit of my groups film.
We all worked collaboratively to create this piece and use our limited resources to create this final edit. Due to unforeseen circumstances with our actors we had to improvise and work to a smaller time frame than what we planned. Even though we had a smaller time frame that what we should have had, our final product turned out really well. If we where to film this again we would get more reliable actors as this caused the main issues.
We wanted our sketch to be comedic, the interview scene was based on the well known interview of Quentin Tarantino talking to Channel 4 when he gets angry at the interviewer, gives awkward replies and doesn’t want to answer his questions. The sketch was also based on Alan Carr’s show Chatty Man as his comedic style and talk show combination work well together and the guests aren’t taken too seriously.
The vision mixing on this edit was really smooth as the conversation between the interviewer and guest flowed therefore the crew knew where to cut at each point. The group also followed the document below which detailed what shots the actors would need to focus on, where to look and at what point. The zoom shots where planned to fit with the “cringeworthy” chat show style as we wanted the audience to find the sketch as funny as possible with all the “mistakes” being shown to the audience as the continuity on actual chat shows would follow the usual conventions whereas in our sketch we wanted it to look like a fake chat show which would feature on a comedy program.
As my role was sound design, I made sure that each location didn’t have any sound pollution or anything that could effect the overall sound of the shoot. I used a boom mic, which was also seen in shot on the first clip but then tried lapel mics in the rest of the shoot. Unfortunately the lapel mics had a lot of interference due to the actors moving a lot, therefore I decided to record the audio via a boom mic as this wouldn’t be seen in shot and would have less sound pollution.

Here’s my final export of Daniel’s music video, “I Don’t Think So”. I used colour correction techniques to get to the end product. I also used skills that I had learnt previously in other edits.

Whilst editing Daniel’s music video there where a few complications. I had to lip read his lips in order to match them up to his vocals as 2 of the cameras didn't record any sound so I couldn’t use this as a basis to follow. I therefore had to carefully match up his lip movements to his vocals as if he was then lip syncing his own song. Another complication I came across was one of the cameras white balance was slightly off, this is seen on the screenshot above where i had to colour correct the white balance so it fitted with the rest of the video. As a few of the shots had purple lighting to them, the colour correction didn’t look too bad as it had a blue hue to it to match the blue/purple lighting.

Here is the final edit of my NorthWesters production. I edited the sound from the 1st rough edit and then colour corrected all of the footage. The sound now sounds a lot smoother and all of it is at the same level. The colour correction I used was LUT’s, they add a darker effect which made the scene look like a pub at night which was the look I was going for, it also now looks more professional. As this was my first time operating the boom mic I was impressed with how well i captured the audio whilst shooting.

Today I was shooting a music video for Daniel, to get different shots we had 3 handhelds cameras and 1 fixed tripod camera. I was positioned on one of the handheld cameras on a platform in order to get a high angled shot.
The photos above show the lighting and camera set up we used whilst shooting with Daniel.
I was the sound operator for this shoot as I work i live music production and know how speakers, microphones, DI boxes, etc work.
When I walked into the studio and saw the set up my initial thought was to use DI Boxes to transfer the sound of both vocal and guitar into the mixing room from the sound desk but we didn’t have the DI Boxes or leads on site that where needed at the time of the shoot therefore I had to change my plan.
I then decided to us a lapel mic but the interference of Daniel moving his arm whilst playing guitar would be picked up on the lapel mic, this meant that the shotgun mic where the best option.
I decided that to get the best sound on this shoot I would need two shotgun mic, one focusing on the amp and one on Daniel’s microphone, this was so the 1st mic on the amp would pick up the sound of his guitar and the second one would pick up his vocals.
The call sheet for this shoot is also attached to this post.
Before shooting this video, I watched the “Sound Of Silence” cover by Passenger to get inspiration. i focused on the colours used and how they portray emotions, this is why I chose to use purple gels in the shoot with Daniel as this colour created a good ambience when in contrast with the flood lights. The pace of editing also inspired me, this is because the pace of editing doesn’t need to be fast if the song is slow, this is because normally the footage is cut to the beat of the song.
The lyrics of Daniel’s song can be interpreted as a independent person who is headstrong and doesn’t need anyone in their life. They could also be interpreted  as breakup lyrics for when the performer is starting to get over their ex.

Here is the clip I worked off for the shoot.
In this sequence, there are a lot of 2 shots and close ups, this is to establish the body language and facial expressions of each actor as it’s an emotional scene. I used these shot ideas when filming my own take on it.
I used first year actors for this scene when I filmed it, they where good but could have made the scene even better by learning the script so they didn’t have to keep checking over it and so the flow of the scene felt smoother. If I had more time this is how I would prepare by getting the actors to learn their parts.

Good Will Hunting Shoot
Today i filmed Good Will Hunting. The shoot went well as I followed the floor plan I created, I am now in post-production to edit the footage. Photos taken at the shoot are attached to this post. Each shot was carefully chosen to create the desired effect as this is an iconic emotional scene which everyone knows. Close up shots are used in order to show emotion to the audience by the actors facial expressions or body language, this is what we tried to portray during the filming of this scene.

First Rough Edit - “NorthWesters”
I have edited the first rough edit of my “NorthWesters” production, this hasn’t been colour corrected or had the sound edited as it was a first edit so i knew how I wanted to sequence shots. I noticed a problem with the last shot as the sound wasn't loud enough, this means I will have to edit the sound levels so it matches the rest of the sequence, the same goes for the music on the opening and ending credits.
Overall i am happy with how the shoot went and how the footage turned out, I just need to work on the sound in my new shoots and some of the lighting as certain shots where darker or brighter than others in the sequence.
I am now in the process of editing my final edit for this shoot.

NorthWesters Post-Production
Since we filmed our own version of Eastenders, I decided to name my take on it “NorthWesters” as it features actors from the North West of England. I got the actors to follow the script that we had and then filmed different shots from multiple cameras. I used the boom mic to record the actors voices as lapel mics would catch background noise and interference noise which would effect the sound in post-production.
The screenshot below shows the different shots I edited together to make the sequence flow. I added cross dissolves to some of the shots to show that time had moved on. I also has to colour correct some of the shots as certain cameras where darker than others.
Just like Eastenders, my edit had a multi-strand narrative where the characters storylines intertwine, this means that the audience can focus on more than one story line at once without it being confusing.
In one of the end shots one of the flood lights was visible in shot as it reflected onto a image on the wall, this meant i had to work around this and edit the reflection out of shot by re-scaling the footage so the reflection was out of view.
I created the opening and ending credits by getting the existing Eastenders opening and ending credits but cutting the logo out of shot and adding my own. If I had the resources I would film my own arial show but of the North West to fit with the title of the show.
Attached to this post are photographs showing the filming process of the shoot.

Eastenders
youtube
Before storyboarding and filming our own Eastenders style short film, we watched this clip for inspiration. Multiple shots are used in this clip for dramatic effect. The wide shots shot the characters body language whereas the close ups show their facial expressions. A variety of shots are needed in order to make the show move along slowly without making the audience feel uncomfortable. The storyboards are attached to this post.

Conventions when filming
Whilst in the studio today, we shot 2 films. One of them conformed to conventions whilst the other challenge the conventions. This was done for two different concepts of a chat show. One was filmed as a professional set whereas the other one which didn’t conform made the audience question if it was improvised or not.
For the first film which conformed to the stereotypical film conventions, the audience where engaged but no fully. This was due to the lack of different shots and the conversation between the actors carrying on for too long. The length of the shot was a good time but the dialogue needed work as it felt as if it dragged on for too long, the timing of cuts could also improve slightly as there should have been a wider variety. The wide shot in the first film was successful, this is due to the audience being able to see the body language of the 3 actors on the couch and show the group dynamic. If I where to shoot this again, I would give the actors more of a script or time frame for each of them to talk as this script was very improvised. Also, the exposure of the cameras should have been lowered as most of the shots where over-exposed.
During the second shoot, a lot of the set up was improvised, this was due to us wanting to challenge conventions. The audience where engaged throughout this shoot as it was funny and held their attention, the variety of shots and humour captured the audience and didn’t loose their attention. The length of the shoot was perfect as it didn’t feel as if it dragged on for too long. All of the shots where successful as they made the audience laugh and not switch off. Even though we wanted to make the shoot look “naff” and comedic, the areas to improve are still valid. Next time, we would use either clip on microphones for each actor or use a fake boom pole as well as a real one in order to not effect the sound quality but still have the comedic value of seeing it in shot. The exposure of the cameras could also be lowered as some of the shots where too over exposed. The actors worked really well on this shoot, improvising their lines. I wouldn’t suggest any improvements for them.
The first shoot which conformed to stereotypical conventions is attached to the post below. The second shoot was created to challenge the film conventions, this is attached to this post.

Today, we looked into Jeremy Kyle’s show structure and came up with a plan to start creating a script for our own interpretation of the show. We then went on to create a script for our actors to follow, this included how they should act with their body language, facial features and tone of voice,
Situation - The situation of the script was that a man went on holiday with a friend and girlfriend then woke up the next day with a tattoo on his forehead, not knowing how he got it. He then blamed his friend. Impact - The impact of this caused tension between the tattooed man and his friends as his friend was denying that he did it but the man’s girlfriend was also denying it. Needs - The guests needed to take a lie detector to prove who was in the wrong. Goals - The presenter wanted to get the truth out of who got the man tattooed but neither the girlfriend or friend would admit it. The presenter wanted to prove that not everyone is as truthful or nice as you may think and to e careful who you trust/believe.
The lighting and camera work where good in this shoot, although the vision mixing could have been slightly improved as some of the shots showed the cameras moving round and zooming in and out which makes the audience distracted from the content they’re watching. Also, the sound wasn’t good as the boom mic didn’t work properly, we then swapped to lapel miss which where a lot better but also had a few issues when the actors moved or made a small sound their mics picked it up. Next time, we would use a better boom mic which is working correctly and instruct the actors to not move around as it effects the lapel mics.

I analysed the clips above to show how Jeremy Kyle is presented via his TV show.
Sound - The sound on the first video is an audio clip. This song is very easy on the ears and makes the viewer feel comfortable.
Editing - The editing of this is very fast paced. There are multiple shots edited together in a short space of time. The show is also fast faced therefore the editing of this short clip foreshadows what the show will be like.
Lighting - The lighting used in the first clip is very basic, this is because the setting is an everyday style shot therefore natural lighting would be used.
Framing - The framing of this video is very professional and isn’t filmed on hand held cameras. This shows that the production was filmed with a high standard.
The type of language used in this show is varied. Jeremy is very well spoken and doesn’t use slang whereas his guests often use slang words and are ill-mannered. On the other hand, when Jeremy wants to get down to his guests level he can be known to use slang words to prove a point and to show his guests what level he is on. The sound on the show is mainly conversations between the guests and Jeremy but there is always a theme tune used when the show goes on a break and at the start and end of each episode. Swearing is also cut out of the show by muting the sound. This is so viewers aren’t offended. By using obscene language the guest make themselves seem of a lower class as it is assumed by society that if you aren’t well spoken then you’re of a lower class.
The pace of discussion varies throughout the show, the cutting of shots then speed up when the conversations get more heated. Throughout this show, the multi-camera set up is usually 2 fixed cameras on tripods, 1 on a crane and one hand held. These cameras are used to maintain a static shot with no shake movements; whereas the hand held camera is used when the viewer is meant to feel uneasy or to show them something they aren’t meant to see, for example when the camera follows the guest backstage or behind the scenes,

Week 3
During our lesson, I researched the Jeremy Kyle show in more depth, this was to make notes and gather information to be able to create a script for our studio work later on in the day.
The host Jeremy Kyle, is known for his upfront persona and is perceived to be of a higher class than the people featured on his show.
The chairs used on the show, separate the guests from each other which from the start creates tension and an uncomfortable atmosphere for the viewers watching.
Also, compared to his guests, Jeremy dresses smartly in a blue suit surrounded by a blue studio set whereas his guests usually dress in casual clothes and don’t take much pride in there personal appearance. Jeremy’s suit and set colour would have been chosen very carefully as the connotations of blue are usually; calm, stable, wisdom, loyalty and truth which is what he tries to portray these values on his guests.
Throughout the program, facial expressions are used to show emotions felt by both Jeremy and his guests that they don’t speak. This is also shown by body language.
