In the hazy orange red light of sunset, you could feel the gold seep off of your surroundings, glinting off the treetops and tall, wiry stalks of dry grass surrounding your homestead. They wavered in the wind, and the breeze itself carried the smell and sound of the small village before you. The tinkling sound of children’s laughter and gentle toll of windchimes seemed to lift a soft yet profound part of you, held aloft like a leaf descending through the air. Yet you didn’t pay attention to any of it. Instead, your gaze remained focused on the path before you, winding towards the village center past the row of other houses and shanties that sprawled across the loosely built community that had sprung up in years past.

You were waiting for your husband.

Male draugr/lich x female character - Part One (sfw)

A slight departure from my usual reader inserts for you in this ‘part one’ of a number of chapters. It’s currently a 20k word WIP (as of 15th May 2021 anyway) so if you’d rather wait for the whole thing to be finished, keep an eye on my masterlist, I guess? Otherwise, let me know if you’re enjoying it, and I’ll continue to post it. Thank you very much to those who did express a desire to read it now as a WIP. You’re all superstars.

I really hope you folks like it anyway. I’m oddly nervous about sharing it, since it’s come to be a very special story for me with lots of feels and adventures, but here we are. (Part Two will feature our main character’s two best friends: an enormous werebear and his elven husband, Mythlas).

Content: fantasy-typical violence/threat/sword-fighting, cursed treasure, and (mentioned) a best friend in a critical condition with a serious illness.

Our female adventurer delves deep into a long-forgotten tomb, looking for a mythical amulet that will supposedly save her best friend, who lies back at his farm, clinging to the very edge of life. Exhausted, and outnumbered by swarming draugr, an opportunity for escape presents itself, and she must make a leap of trust on the spur of the moment…

(featuring a shy, bumbling cutie lich, and set in a world that’s basically Skyrim but without direct mention to anything from the game other than a vague ‘dragon priest’ and the term ‘draugr’ (which are Norse zombies/liches anyway).

Sword drawn, she inched around the corner of the twisting, downward-sloping stone passageway, breath held.

The damp and cold of the tomb had long ago seeped through her clothes and into her skin, slowing her movements and making the fingers of her sword-hand clumsy around the hilt. Her breath fogged in front of her as she slowly released it, and she strained, listening for the shuffling sounds of the undead, stirred from their tombs by her arrival. Perhaps, if the book she’d read on the draugr was to be believed, they rarely slept at all, and wandered the meandering passageways of the old crypts forever, day and night. The book had also said they tended to the tombs, even keeping the spells going over the perpetually-burning, enchanted candles.  

The thought of this network of interconnected tunnels constantly thrumming with the restless undead, like some grim anthill, made her stomach turn over.  

Forcing the nausea down, she inhaled the damp, green smell of the stale air to steady herself. Rising up on either side of her, the rough masonry of the rounded tunnel’s supporting walls glistened in the eerie, ever-present torchlight from brackets on the walls. Here and there the stones turned slick and green with algae, and a rivulet of melting snow trickled down through the mountain along the seams between the colossal blocks of hewn stone supports. Above her, the raw, natural rock of the mountain had been left to form a fairly intimidating ceiling, but beneath her feet, the flat flagstones made her soft-soled boots only a mere whisper away from silent.  

Finally after what felt like an age of dithering at the corner, she stepped out into the room beyond and immediately cursed.

Pick five of your character's most influential milestones (moving away from home, a first kiss, a death, etc.). Why and how did these milestones affect your character?

I’ll be 100% honest with you. My notifs aren’t on, I had no idea this existed until today, and I’m pretty sure it’s been sitting here for who knows how long. I’m so sorry.

As for my OC, she’s been through, quite literally, hell and back and to hell again. Meeting a complete stranger, then asking him to be her older brother and appointing him to be her royal advisor was basically on a whim. She learned what it felt like to actually have an older sibling who loved her flaws and all. This is a tad personal, but I won’t delve too deep into it. When Joshua and Chu were still hanging around at the place where they both first met, a lot of drama ensued between people who didn’t have anything better to do. Sometimes they were dragged into it, and most of the time they were negatively affected. Even Chu said to Joshua that she wanted to kill a random stranger because of how they viewed her and her race. The siblings are practically inseparable; he’s the protector of her heart and will not allow anyone to steal it.

Chu never thought that she would ever have children of her own. She was an only child, and her father treated her like dirt. She grew up in a home where neither parent paid attention to her unless it regarded meals. And so Chisei, Inuyabi, and Shisui are showered with their mother’s love 24/7. They’re triplets who have a unique feature from both their mother and currently absent father. Despite being neglected as a child, Chu Sui does all that she can to provide her children the love they need to grow up and become who they want to be.

One would believe after witnessing the disrespect and unsolicited hate Chu has received from all kinds of individuals that she should have put them in their place for doing so. Unfortunately, committing manslaughter is not something Chu wants to be convicted of, and she’s the only one who’s fit to rule as empress. Although, over time, she’s learned to let the haters hate and simply smile without a care. There was an incident when some random guy cut her chest open as a reply to her greeting, and she almost died that day, but he was swiftly dealt with.

Moving onto her love life! Chu Sui had three different lovers and one of them is the father of her children. No, she doesn’t mention those men whatsoever expect for when she’s a little drunk and spills out all of her embarrassing secrets. But she will admit that she took a small piece of their hearts whereas they did the same to hers. The third lover was more than perfect in Chu’s eyes. He never blamed her for anything, he always reassured her that everything would be okay, and he expressed genuine concern when she wasn’t herself. Sure, her older brother could’ve easily replaced him, but Chu wanted to experience the feeling from someone who wasn’t family or a close friend. Now she’s focused on accomplishing goals and fulfilling the needs of the people under her rule. Also, there may or may not be a particular bodyguard/commander of her demon army who’s waiting to confess his love.

Last but most definitely not least, being a demon. I probably should’ve put this at the top of the list. It was Chu’s reluctance and strong urge to get back at her father that encouraged her decision. She didn’t have to take the offer, but she was blinded by revenge, and at such a young age, too. Of course, transforming your body into a that of a demon, or transforming it into anything in general, was excruciatingly painful. Chu had created a network of undercover persons that report to her when they notice something abnormal happening.

I had a lot of fun answering these questions! I really hope that I get the chance to do more in the future, and thank you so much, random OC question fairy!
