WHAT COLORS ARE AVAILABLE FOR CONCRETE COUNTERTOPS?
When it comes to color options, concrete offers nearly limitless possibilities—shades of white, gray, brown, red, blue, yellow, green, orange, black and more can be created. So, if you’re looking for something to add drama to your home or want a countertop that complements your restaurant’s theme then look no further.
HOW ARE CONCRETE COUNTERTOPS COLORED?
Color can be applied throughout the entire mix with integral pigments, or applied to the surface of cured concrete with stains or dyes. There are different brands of pigments, stains, and aggregate colors, so concrete countertops will always be unique.
Integral pigments offer the widest range of colors and are suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Pigment is blended into the mix, imparting color throughout the entire countertop. Nearly any color can be achieved by blending pigments together, allowing skilled craftsmen to color match, although this is not an exact science. In most cases, custom colors or color matching will be more expensive than standard colors. Pigments are stable colors and offer consistent and dependable results as long as measurements are precise. Since they are mixed throughout the entire batch of concrete, a substantial amount of product is required.
Acid stains are applied to the surface of cured concrete. Stains are available in a limited range of colors, but can be mixed and layered to expand the possibilities. Acid stains form their color through a chemical reaction with the concrete. Stains are best applied by professionals, because the results can be varied and unpredictable due to their reactive nature. Since stains are applied only to the surface of the countertop, repeated abrasion can wear down the color, but sealers can prolong the life of the color. Acid stains are UV stable and can be used on indoor or outdoor countertops.
Dyes are available in a wider range of colors than stains and can be mixed and layered creating numerous possibilities. Dyes are applied to the surface of cured concrete and can also be used to enrich surfaces that are already stained or integrally pigmented. Water- or solvent-based formulas are available. A UV sealer should be applied to protect the color, as not all dyes are UV stable. As with stains, dyes can be tricky to apply. Both dyes and stains can be used in specific areas as accent colors or with stencils to create designs. Dyes and stains can be more cost effective than integral pigments, as a little product can go a long way.
Whether your countertop is integrally pigmented, stained or dyed, make sure it is sealed well so food and beverages won’t alter the color.
WHITE COUNTERTOPS
Another popular color for concrete countertops is white. White countertops provide a crisp, clean look that many homeowners appreciate. Pigments or other additives must be added to the concrete to produce bright whites.
Design ideas for white countertops:
Continue the minimalist white color palette with cast concrete backsplashes
Opt for an undermount sink so that the crisp look of the counter surface is undisturbed
Add an unexpected design element such as embedded colored glass
Include wood accents such as a teak raised bar and drainboard
BLACK COUNTERTOPS
Black countertops are versatile and add a high-end, custom look. Styles from shiny smooth to textured matte are possible depending on the finishing techniques used.
Design ideas for black countertops:
Pair with white cabinets and backsplash for a timeless black and white style.
Inlay a pattern for a subtle design element.
Use a matte sealer for a rustic contemporary feel that mimics slate.
GRAY COUNTERTOPS
When you think of concrete, gray is the color that most frequently comes to mind. However, you probably didn’t realize there were so many variations of gray. Gray countertops are popular in modern homes and restaurants because of their industrial appeal. Some people opt to leave their concrete countertops the natural cement gray, while others add integral color pigments to get just the right hue.
Design ideas for gray countertops:
For added texture, include aggregates in the concrete mix that can be exposed by polishing
Combine gray counters with board-formed pillars to get a truly industrial look
Show off gray countertops by contrasting them with bold colored cabinets or furniture
Use a high-gloss sealer to create a reflective surface
BROWN COUNTERTOPS
If you’re looking for a more traditional countertop, brown is a good color. Brown countertops can be colored integrally or topically stained for a rich, earthy tone. Many people opt for brown because it can be used to create a look similar to natural stone. Brown and other natural colors are also known for bringing warmth to a home’s décor.
Design ideas for brown countertops:
Use multiple stain colors to achieve a mottled finishes
Add veins of polished glass to the countertop to get a look similar to natural stone
Select a decorative edge detail that will give the counter an aged appearance
Embed large river rocks into the concrete to create a streambed effect
CUSTOM COLORED COUNTERTOPS
When it comes to color options, concrete offers nearly limitless possibilities. So, if you’re looking for something to add drama to your home or want a countertop that complements your restaurant’s theme, then look no further. You can even let your counter be the focal point of the room with a wild design or mix of vibrant hues
Design ideas for custom colored countertops:
Pick a color that you love and won’t tire of quickly
Try pairing complimentary colors for an eye-catching contrast
Draw color inspiration from backsplash tiles or other design elements in your kitchen
Be sure that the countertop is sealed well so that food and beverages won’t alter the color
HOW TO GET SAMPLES
Most concrete countertop contractors will have standard samples on hand and offer custom color samples. If you are interested in seeing color samples, contact a local contractor for more information.
Standard color samples (and remember each contractor's samples will be different) run in the $25-$50 range. Custom color samples runs $75-$150 and up. In most cases, the price of samples is applied against the cost of the order

Ready mix concrete: Ready mix concrete near me
In this article, we will discuss the ready mix concrete. Further explain the ready mix concrete suppliers near you and its price?
What is ready mix concrete?
Concrete that mix and manufactured in batching plant according to the designed concrete mix grade with ensured quality control is called Ready mix concrete.
It is specifically mixed in batching plant according to costumer need. Batching plant is a computer guided plant which allow the exact quantity of material according to the exact mix design.
As it is computer guided there is a much better quality control option with less error as compare to manual mix concrete on site.
In batching plant there’s a series of concrete mix grade and water cement ratio so the concrete could be ready in minutes by pressing single button without any quality compromises.
Admixtures can be added too if there’s a need of high workability or need to increasing in initial setting.
What is ready mix concrete used for? It is used, where there’s not enough space on site for concrete manufacturing or have less time and workmanship.
Before, ready mix concrete was not used much, but today the world is getting more & more mega projects and skyscrapers within cities there’s high demand of ready mix concrete because it reduce the man power and time.
In other hand ready mix concrete also used where, there is not much space on site for manually mixing or they aren’t willing to do so.
On mega projects ready mix concrete is best option because, you give the responsibility of quality control, testing material, construction supply chain & concrete mix design to the specialists who are made for those jobs.
It saves your time, man power and workers. Ready mix concrete is purchased & sold by volume in USA its cubic meter/yard. As it is computer guided batching there is consistency and continuity in batches.
Ready mix concrete
Is RMC good to use on site?
The answer is Yes! Except its higher in price but with ready mix concrete you can really save you time, space and workmanship.
Ready mix concrete near me: Ready mixed concrete supplier
There are many ready mix conc suppliers and manufacturer in USA, UK and India. Some of them are as follows.
Ready mix concrete company and supplier in USA near you:
Following are the ready mix concrete companies and suppliers in USA.
Ready Mix USA Shop , Dalton, GA 30721, United States.
Argos USA Ready Mixed Concrete, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870, United States.
Cemex, CA,USA.
Ready mixed concrete supplier in UK near you:
Following are the ready mix concrete suppliers in UK.
CEMEX concrete plant.
Easymix concrete UK ltd.
Rapid ready mix concrete in London .
RMC supplier in India nearer:
Following are the ready mixed concrete suppliers in India.
RMC Readymix (India) Raipur, Chattisgarh, India.
IRC CONCRETEMIX INDIA PVT LTD, Mangalore, India.
RDC Concrete India Pvt Ltd, Mumbai, India
Ready mixed concrete bags calculation:
Calculation of concrete mix is regular job on site but its not really complex but simple mathematical calculation.
Length of slab = 10 feet
Width of slab = 10 feet
Thickness of slab = 5 Inches
L×W×T = 10×10×(5/12) = 41.66 cft
*(5/12) to convert inches into feet.
Divide 41.66 by 35.31 (1cum=35.31cft) to convert into cubic meter which is 1.17 Cum.
As it is wet volume of concrete, to convert it into dry volume multiply it with 1.54. Because dry volume is 1.54 times to wet volume. Wet volume is shrunken volume after water evaporation and air voids evaporation.
1.17×1.54= 1.808 cum or 64.15 cft (dry volume). If you are using 80-pound concrete bag, simply divide 64.15/0.60, so there will be 107 concrete bags needed.
Ready mixed concrete vs site mixed:
Ready mixed concrete advantages:
RMC consume less time. As there is no mixing & batching process on site.
RMC needs almost no equipment on site.
RMC can be distributed on many sites at the same time over the project.
It is higly usable for rise project.
In RMC there is no need of storing of RAW material on site.
While using RMC wastage on site is really less, as it is manufacture on batching plant.
In RMC quality of concrete do not compromise.
There’s a high consistency in RMC as it is computer guided.
There’s no need of high workforce and worker on site when you are going to use RMC.
RMC is calculated as single item and the estimation is really easy.
In RMC there’s a less space needed for transit mixer truck to pour concrete.
Large amount of concrete batches can be delivered by batching plant.
RMC is high in cost as compare to site mix concrete.
If the site location is far from the batching plant, there is a need to add admixture to increase setting time and workability of concrete.
Site mixed concrete advantages:
Concrete which is batched and mixed on site.
Concrete mixed on site consume time to batch and mix.
It equipment for batching and mixer for mixing it.
Site mix concrete can’t be distributed on different points even within the projects if there is a major project.
It can only be manufactured on the point or nearest location.
Site mix concrete can not be use for high rise projects. It will loose the quality while transporting to the point.
In Site mix concrete there’s more space needed for storage of RAW material on site.
In Site mix concrete there’s more wastage on site as it is batched and mixed on site.
There’s a chance of quality compromise as it is done manually.
In Site mix concrete consistency may vary as its done manually.
There’s much workforce needed for Site mix concrete.
In Site mix concrete its a little complex to estimate the quantity of concrete, as all the items are calculated separately.
It requires more space for mixer, generator, and concrete transportation equipment.
Large amount of concrete batch can not be delivered as its done manually by hand or mixer, it can be manufactured of single or maximum 3 bags of cement mix concrete at once.
Site mix concrete costs less as compare to RMC.
No problem if the site is far from batching plant, there is no need to add admixture.
Ready mix concrete price:
RMC price in India:
Per square foot price = 4200 INR
Site-mix conc price in India:
Per square foot price = 3500 INR
Ready mixed concrete price in USA:
Per cubic yard price of concrete in USA is $120 on average.
Site mix concrete price in USA:
Per cubic yard price of concrete in USA is $105 on average.
Ready-mix concrete price in UK:
Per cubic meter cost of concrete in UK is between £75 – £100.
Site mix concrete price in UK:
Per cubic meter cost of concrete in UK is between £65 – £85

Key Differences Between Residential and Commercial Construction
The construction industry comprises of a wide range of activities including both residential and commercial construction. So, how do residential construction and commercial construction differ? It is wise to get to grips with the differences so that you select the ideal construction specialists for your next project.
Read on to find out about the critical differences between residential and commercial construction;
Seven differences between residential and commercial construction
Equipment
Typically, commercial development is a much larger project and much larger building. This means the equipment for residential and commercial projects will vary considerably. For example, commercial properties will typically need high-powered machinery, large cranes and other specialist pieces Order Amoxil.
On the other hand, residential projects will not require such extensive machinery or large-scale equipment. As equipment needs specially trained personnel to operate it, you will typically only see this type of machinery, and these team members, on large commercial projects. This is because the cost of commercial projects can justify the equipment and additional specialist workforce.
Materials
Commercial buildings typically have a steel frame while residential construction projects will predominantly focus on timber. The primary reason for this is commercial projects can justify the cost and investment of using steel. However, residential construction needs to be more affordable as small-scale projects and timber is a cheaper material to use.
Typically, construction firms in the commercial sector will have long-term relationships with suppliers which means that materials are consistent in projects. However, residential projects may have more choice when it comes to selecting the right materials. Furthermore, small projects will have more flexibility in the materials to use. However, this may cost more due to the tenuous relationships with suppliers.
Use
Commercial construction is used by businesses and involves projects such as the building of offices, industrial facilities and other business establishments. Residential construction, on the other hand, will be in places where people live, such as in apartment, houses and other homes.
Construction site
Property owners or tenants will typically instruct residential construction projects. Commercial construction will come from business decisions. With this in mind, residential builders will usually have one point of contact while a commercial building company may have to liaise with multiple people or a board of stakeholders.
Permits required
While both residential and commercial construction both require permits and adherence to building regulations, typically commercial construction has a greater range of codes and permits due to the use and makeup of the building. Commercial properties will typically be more complex construction projects including aspects such as lift access, complex power solutions and parking areas and garages. However, a residential project will usually have fewer elements to consider.
Pace of work
Often, commercial construction companies will have a large workforce and a requirement to work at speed to meet business deadlines and to ensure maximum efficiency for greater profits. Businesses will typically have more stringent expectations for timelines compared to the average homeowner. Furthermore, commercial construction projects operate in a multi-task environment while residential projects may not have the resources or space to do so.
Residential projects usually operate at a much slower pace of work compared to commercial construction project this is due to less efficient equipment and a smaller workforce. However, commercial projects will usually take longer complete due to the complexity and extent of the work involved.
Functionality
Another aspect that shows the difference between commercial and residential construction is the functionality of the building. While residential projects will have limited functionality purposefully for domestic uses, the functionality of commercial premises can be extensive.
Commercial construction may include shops, warehouses, factories, clinical laboratories, hospitals, theatres, sports venues, local authority buildings and much more. With the increased functionality, there’ll be a greater need for specific services such as the installation of fire protection equipment, escalators and lifts, security, access control, data and server rooms, lighting and HVAC.
Funding
Commercial and publicly funded construction projects will usually command a higher price than a domestic construction project which will have to be cheaper to suit the budget of the homeowner. As the typical domestic client will have a stricter limit on what they are willing to pay for projects, builders need to price accordingly for both sectors.
As the size of the project is much smaller for the domestic market, such as small renovations, refurbishments and extensions, the price reflects the scope of the work.

Difference between concrete and cement
If you are looking for an answer to what is the difference between concrete and cement? Then this article is all about the concrete and cement differences.
Tumblr media
Difference between concrete and cement?
The main difference between concrete and cement? The concrete is a composed mix of cement, sand and aggregates. While the cement is an ingredient of concrete, work as a binding material.
Even though both terms often used interchangeably, cement is just an ingredient use in concrete, while the conc is a mixture of sand and aggregates with the cement water paste. Cement is 8 to 20 percent by weight or by volume. Quantity of cement depends on the concrete grade mix ratio.
Cement binds the sand & aggregates through its hydration process (adding water into cement release heat, that initiate chemical reaction) that harden sand & aggregates into a hard rock. The concrete gets its desired 99% strength after 28 days, but initially sets in 24 to 48 hours.

Difference between concrete and cement
What is concrete?
Concrete is a composite material or a mixture of cement and water paste with fine and coarse aggregates in a defined ratios. Concrete is widely use building materials globally. Further there’re different types of concrete and different concrete mix grades.
The ratio of ingredients depends on the concrete grade going to be made. Further the water-cement ratio in conc, should be accordingly. There are different grades of concrete such as M10,M15 up to M80. Each concrete grade has a different use and applications.
Brief history of cement? Portland cement:
Cement is a adhesive or binding material, a fine powder, used to make concrete and mortar. It works as a binding material. It is composition of lime, silica, aluminum and iron. These materials are mix and heat up to the high temperature to make clinkers, then clinkers are grind into fine powder. In 1824 Joseph Aspdin invented the cement.
Portland cement is a general type, which is use in concrete making. Portland name refer to the type of cement used most commonly. Further there’s two types. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) & Pozzolana Portland cement which is made by addition of fly ash, volcanic ash into OPC.
Difference between concrete and mortar?
There’s a huge difference between both. Concrete is composed of cement, sand & aggregates, while the mortar is just cement & sand mixture. Mortar is use to plaster walls and to make patios surface, while the conc is variety of use e.g. beam, columns, foundation, slab etc.
Is cement stronger than concrete?
No, cement isn’t stronger than concrete. Cement and water paste has less compressive strength as compare to conc. It is use as binder, which binds, set or harden inert materials such as sand and aggregates.
Can cement be used by itself? What is cement used for:
Yes, you can use cement itself by mixing water but its not as stronger as concrete. Itself it can’t be use as concrete. Its paste with water just make a grout, which is use to fill voids & cracks in concrete & plaster. It increase stiffness and reduce permeability.
Why do people say cement instead of concrete?
Its been folk etymology from years and years. USA constructors spent hundreds of dollars on advertisements to make a distinction between calling cement instead of concrete. But still some people refer cement to a conc, while cement is a part/ingredient use in concrete making.
Will cement get hard without sand?
Yes cement will get hard without sand but it will not provide the strength as with sand. Without sand cement can only be use as grout, which is just applicable for filling cracks on surface. Except this cement grout reduced permeability if applied on surface.
Is all cement waterproof?
No, cement isn’t a waterproof nor conc is. Both have high densities by which that can resist water. They both absorb water, if the water stays for too long, but if you make their surface smoother and pour it well, it will not cause leakage problems.
Can I make concrete with just sand and cement?
No, you can’t make concrete with just sand and cement. Aggregate is an essential part of concrete. The mixture of cement-sand is called mortar, which is use to plaster walls.
How long will concrete last?
Concrete can last up to 100 years, if its poured efficiently, cured and cared. If there’s no proper maintenance or less, the life span of concrete will be shorter, can be half.

Building Construction
How to construct residential building?
There’s first step is to make an estimate before starting the construction of residential building. Material cost, labour cost and contingencies are included in estimation consideration.
Before the estimation, building plans and drawings are prepared according to the need of resident/owner, then it is approved by the competent authority and owner.
The purpose of approval is to insure that building drawings, designs and plans are safe & according to regulations. After approval the construction work is started on contract basis or daily labour basis.
First step on ground is to take possession of plot and mark the boundaries of plot. Then the plot is cleaned and layout is done according to drawings. Now the construction of residential building construction begin.
📷
Modern residential building construction
Following are the steps for house/residential building construction.
Earth work in building construction:
In construction work usually there’s a excavation for foundation, this excavation is called earth work. Foundation has width and depth according to drawings. After the construction of foundation, the excavated soil is refilled and compacted.
After refilling up to the ground floor level, if the remaining excavated soil is extra then it is used in ramp and road construction in front of building. If there’s more remaining soil left, it is then dig into a suitable place.
Concrete work in foundation:
After the completion of exacavation, its depth is checked by the level. If there’s fluctuation, it is then corrected. After that layer of concrete is then placed at the bottom. That concrete mix ratio is usually (1:4:8).
Sometimes it can be (1:5:10) or (1:6:20), because its a lean concrete and lean concrete is use/place to get smooth surface. Depth of this concrete layer can be between 20cm to 45cm (9″ to 18″). Usually 30cm (12″) is used.
Damp proof course:
To protect the super structure of building, there’s a 2.5cm (1″) thick concrete layer is placed which is called damp proof course. Concrete mix ratio (1:1.5:3) is used for DPC. Sometimes waterproof material is also added in @ 1kg/cement bag.
Read in detail about damp proof course.
Damp proof course
Masonry work in building construction:
Masonry work is done with cement mortar. Mix ratio for mortar is 1:4 to 1:6 is used. The quantity of brick work is calculated separately for sub structure and super structure as well.
It is also calculated separately for each storey. If it solid wall e.g. 9″ or more then it is calculated by volume method in cubic meter or cubic feet, and then windows and doors spaces are then deducted.
The calculation of single brick wall e.g. 10cm (4.5″), the quantity of brick work is calculated by area method in square feet or square meter.
Brick masonry work in building
Arch and Lintal:
To cover the top of openings of doors and windows in building, arch or lintal are constructed. According to their material, its quantity is calculated separately in cubic meter and cubic feet. Arch is mostly made up with bricks while lintal is made up with reinforced brick or reinforced cocnrete.
Reinforced concrete work:
Lintal, slab, column and column footing usually constructed with reinforced concrete. Good quality of concrete should be used in R.C.C work e.g. (1:2:4).
These quantities are calculated in cubic meter and cubic feet, plus the addition of steel. Steel is calculated as separate item.
Flooring and roofing:
Floor and roof quantities of building are calculated in cubic meter/cubic feet as separate items. Floor finishing can be conglomerate, tarrazo, marble or tile floor. Which is calculated separately.
Modern front elevation of house
Plastering & pointing in building construction:
After completion of masonry and R.C.C work. The form work of slab is then removed and plastering/pointing is started. For plaster work the mortar mix ratio (1:3) to (1:4) is used.
Plater is usually 12mm (1/2″) thick while pointing is done accordingly. Pointing is done on the outer surface of building while plaster is inside.
Doors and windows:
Doors are usually made up of wood while windows of aluminum is consider to better nowadays. Door frames are fixed while masonry work and shutters are joint after plaster with the help of hinges. Aluminum windows can be fixed after plaster and paint work.
White wash in construction of building:
White wash is done after drying of plaster. It is made up with lime. In this step 3 coats of lime is placed on walls to make its surface smoother. Different colours are added sometimes to increase the beauty which is called colour wash.
Nowadays mostly distemper and paint is being used, which is costly but durable as compare to white wash.
Paint and polish:
Wooden doors are polished at the end. Sometimes steel and wooden doors & windows are painted, which is done with the help if brush. Steel door and windows can be painted with spray gun.
Wall paint design for building
Services:
While residential building construction, different services are provided e.g. electricity, gas connections, water supplies and sanitary. For electric supply conduits and boards re fixed in walls and slabs before plaster.
Likewise water supply and sanitary pipes are fixed before the floor placement and walls plaster. After the paint work Electric switches, fans, taps are fixed to prevent them from paint stains.
Types of building construction:
You may see construction as a building, but as a contractor, they classify buildings as five different types . The differentiation depends upon the different elements of buildings such as coloumn, beams, roof, occupant’s use, height of structure and other elements compositions.
IBC (International Building Code) defines the different types of building constructions. Different parameters are taken to categorize buildings, purpose of building is to provide safety for occupants and to establish the worth and value of construction.
Further these building construction types sub categorized in to A & B category, which means sub-type A would be constructed with enhanced/advanced level system, while the sub-type B is constructed with basic system.
Types 1 Non-combustible (2-3 hour fire resistant):
First type of building construction is made up of non-combustible material, such as concrete, steel framing, which is fire resistant up to 3 hours. This provides the highest level of safety. High rise or multi storeys buildings are categorized in type 1 construction.
Types 2 Non-combustible (1 hour fire resistant):
Many commercial buildings and major building constructions are placed in type 2 category. All the building elements such as column, beam, floor, and exterior is made up with non-combustible material (concrete, bricks, blocks). It can withstand fire up to 1 hour. It is less resistant than type 1 construction.
Read also: Commercial construction
Types 3 (Non-combustible wall construction):
In type 3 construction, exterior walls are made up with bricks, concrete block, precast concrete or other non-combustible materials. While the interior walls and roof are made up with wooden frames. Exterior walls are more fire resistant while the interior walls and roof are less resistant.
Type 4 (Heavy timber framing):
Type 4 buildings are made up with heavy timber members. Exterior is made of 8 inch thick timber beam or non rated materials, while the interior beam and framing is made up of heavy timber. These heavy timber framing are different from traditional wooden framing construction. Its more stronger and thicker.
Type 5 (Wood building construction):
Type 5 doesn’t require any element of building to be fire resistant. Type 5 buildings construction can be done with any materials allowed by code (mostly wood). Its budget friendly because of non fire ratings.
Single family residential buildings are mostly built up with wood, some commercial buildings such as ware-houses and restaurants are categorized in type 5 construction.

Stair calculator: Stair stringer calculator | Stair parts
This blog is all about Stair tread calculator and stair riser calculator, stair stringer calculator, stair angle calculator.
What is stair and stair parts?
A continuous whole set of steps to join the two floors of structure is called stair. There’s two basic stair parts, run and riser. The room or area where stair is constructed is called stair case. The rectangular shape unit is called step.
The continuity of steps is called flight. A flight length usually consist of 3 to 15 steps. If there’s more than 15 steps, there’s more flight provided. There’s a space provided b/w two flights to stay, which is usually bigger than step is called landing.
The horizontal surface of step is called going, while the its distance is called tread. The size/length of tread should be between 25cm to 30cm (10 to 12 inches).
The vertical surface of step is called riser. The size/height of riser should be b/w 15cm to 22.5cm (6 to 9 inches). If the step is rectangular (which is common) it is called flier step.
Sometimes the triangular shape steps are provided on landing, which is called winder. How much should be width of stairs? The width of stair shouldn’t be less tha 3feet (36 inches) or 92cm.

Pitch or slope:
The angle formed between the floor level and stair is called Pitch or slope. pitch or slope of stair should be between 25 to 40 degree.
Hand rail:
To keep the stair safe while going up and down, there’s a steel or wooden strip is provided which is called hand rail. It is provided parallel but opposite to wall.
Baluster:
To support the handrail, and join it with stairs step a vertical support is provided which is called stair baluster. Baluster can be of steel and wooden.
Newel post:
At the start or end of stairs, there’s a more thicker & stronger vertical support is provided which is called newel post. Handrail, baluster & newel post are parts of Stair railing.
Head room:
The height from step of stair to the slab is called head room. Head room shouldn’t be less than 2.5 meter (8 feet).
Nosing:
A little grown up edge of tread is called nosing.
Stair parts names
Characteristics of good stair:
Stairs is one of important part of building. A good stair should have following characteristics.
Stairs should be in the center of building, so everyone can access it easily.
All the steps of stairs should be constant & well constructed.
Slope of stairs should be between 25 to 40 degree angle.
Width of stairs should must not be less then 3 feet (85 cm), so the two people can move up & down easily at same time.
Height of head room shouldn’t be less then 2.5 meter (8 feet).
Height of hand rail from steps shouldn’t be less than 85 cm (3 feet).
There shouldn’t be more than 15 steps, nor less than 3 steps in a single flight.
Material used in stairs construction should be of good quality. e.g. R.C.C, steel etc.
There should be proper ventilation for stairs.
Stair calculator: Stair calculation formula
Keep it in mind to provide ease for the users, while designing of stairs. Further the design make it more attractive. following are the principles of designing of stairs.
Stair tread calculator and stair riser calculator:
Formula to calculate nos of riser = height of stair case/height of riser
Let suppose height of floor is 10′ (3 m) = 120″ (304.8 cm)
Take a riser height 7″ (17.78 cm). (which is most commonly used).
Nos of riser= 120″/7″ = 17 (in inches)
Nos of riser= 304.8/17.78 = 17 (in cm)
For tread simply deduct 1 from riser.
Nos of tread = 17-1 = 16.
Stair stringer calculator:
Stringer is basically the inclined length of stair flight. To calculate the stringer you just simple apply the Pythagorean theorem.
Measure the total rise of stair (total height from the floor level to the top).
Measure the total run of the stair (horizontal length of staircase).
Stringer length = under root of (rise2 + run2).
Stringer = under root (102 + 122)= under root (244) = 15.62 feet.
For example Pythagorean theorem is Hypotenuous2 = Base2 + prependicular2.
Stair stringer calculator
Stair angle calculator:
To calculate the angle of stair simply take the vertical measurement of riser which is called rise, and then take measurement of tread which is call run.
Now the angle calculation formula is (tan inverse) Tan-1 (Rise/run).
Tan-1 × (7″/10″). [commonly used rise and run]
The angle of stair = 35°.
Problem/error in stair design:
These 17 steps are provided in a single flight, but above we red that there shouldn’t be more than 15 steps in a flight. So what we do to counter this problem.
Simply increase a little in riser height can solve this issue. Like: take riser height= 8″, so the total steps will be 15, if you take riser height= 9″, total steps will be 13.
This simple thumb rule can be implemented, but if you dont want to inrease thr riser height, you can provide 2 flights. But if you have less space/stair room area then go with increment in riser height .
Stair riser and run calculator
Types of stair according to material:
Following are the materials that can be used in stairs construction.
Wooden stair:
The wooden stairs made up with all timber. Before the use of concrete, wood were preffered for stairs casting. But there were demerit, it wasn’t fire resistant.
But nowadays wood is expensive, the places where wood is cheap there’s already wood is being used. This type of stairs are joined with the help of steel nails and wooden pins.
Metal stair:
Metal and steel is being used in stairs casting which is called metal stair. These are made up with stringer and metal channels. In this type there aren’t riser provided but just treads.
Sometimes it fully metal stairs, but nowadays there’s a marble slab provided at tread. These stairs are usually used at places where wear and tear produced e.g. godowns, factories. They are strong+durable & fire resistant.
Stair railing
Concrete stair:
Stairs that are made up of concrete. These stairs are cheap, easy to construct, Stronger and durable. These are very popular in modern construction. Concrete stairs has two types.
Precast concrete stair:
It is manufactured with plain concrete sills or precast concrete in a controlled enviroment, which is then install on site.Sometime steel bars used in precast manufacturing while it doesn’t used in plain concrete.
R.C.C concrete stair:
R.C.C stairs are made up with reinforced concrete. On the exterior surface of stairs, tile and marble are placed. This make it more attractive, but make sure that tread shouldn’t be much slippery.
R.C.C stairs steel and composition
R.C.C & precast stairs are most commonly used nowadays.
Following are the advantages of R.C.C stairs:
R.C.C stairs can be made up in any shape.
R.C.C stairs are durable.
Its fire resistant.
It don’t produce more sound while walking upon.
It looks more attractive, if constructed well.
R.C.C stair is easy to clean, further low maintenance cost.
