Physical Description:

Weight: up to 45 tons (female) or 60 tons (male)

Length: up to 12 m (40 ft; female) or 15 m (52 ft; male)

Entirely gray, sometimes with lighter patches on the underbelly; adults also often have multiple scars

A long, torpedo-shaped body with a square head

Behaviour

Females live in pods consisting of an older matriarch and multiple mother + calf pairs

Young males live together in 'bachelor schools', while older males are solitary

Adults feed mainly on cephalopods, especially giant squid and colossal squid

Their large size deters predators, but hunts for giant and colossal squid can leave adults with severe injuries

Key Advantages:

Uses echolocation to find prey, enhanced by the special jelly located in its forehead

Has 36-52 teeth on the lower jaw, each one up to 30 cm (11 in) long

Can dive up to 2,250 metres (7,382 ft) and remain submerged for over an hour
