thinking about how hammond basically doesn't see laurence at all between the very start of black powder war and crucible of gold
and he obviously got word of the treason and its consequences, since he went to australia in the first place to give laurence his pardon, but thinking about how incredibly changed hammond must find laurence
like, hammond last saw laurence as this incredibly proper, righteous, mostly centrist man (except for some odd points about dragons), who is clearly raised into and enjoyed all the formalities of society and the navy; who loves his country and cannot imagine britain would be intentionally dishonorable; who takes extreme convincing and internal justification to prostrate himself to the emperor of china; who believes in his government and sees himself a part of securing britain's safety and power
and then hammond doesn't see him for five years, gets an increasingly shocking set of reports about him, and then encounters a nearly unrecognizable tan, hairy, and grizzled farmer who has extremely radical thoughts about dragon rights and reparations; who is completely disillusioned with britain and wants to be left to tend his valley, so that he cannot be so used and so betrayed by his government again -- so very unrecognizable from the man he was a mere five years earlier
what a fucking dramatic difference

I really want Laurence's firstborn child to be a girl because. Obviously Temeraire will immediately claim her as his and as his next captain. She is Laurence's, therefore she is his.
Temeraire: Oh how wonderful Laurence. She is magnificent. And now you do not have to be married anymore! [He would marry. I don't think this man is capable of knowingly having a child and not marrying the mother]
Laurence: Well dear, that is not how marriage works
Temeraire: And she will make a most wonderful captain, how could she not? She is your daughter, after all.
Laurence, who hadn't thought at all that his daughter would be captain because she might be involved in wars: Now hold on dear, would you not rather have a boy?
Temeraire: Well, a boy would be wonderful too, of course. Or another girl. Maybe we could make a whole crew out of your eggs!
Temeraire: Although that might be hard on your wife. Lily says that Harcourt was quite physically weakened from it all. But if you wish to have a boy as well, he would be welcome among my crew of course.
Temeraire: Laurence, why are you so pale? Do you not think it would be wonderful to have a crew with all your children?

Laurence is Temeraire's biggest fanboy bar non

Laurence has absolutely zero chill about Temeraire. He went from "aw man I didn't want to be a rider" to "MY DRAGON IS THE BEST DRAGON I LOVE THIS DRAGON I WOULD DIE FOR THIS DRAGON" in about a month and I love that for him.

I just cannot get over how Tenzing "IDGAF" Tharkay, after one dangerous field trip and a pep talk, immediately starts caring about Will "Gives Way Too Many Fucks Always" Laurence so hard that he changes his entire life to be with him. He doesn't give a single fig for England but he fell head over heels in love with a man who's been in His Majesty's service since he was twelve and how do you even seduce a guy like that? With twenty ferals to help save a Prussian garrison? I guess?

very soft today about the time Laurence went to scold Demane for provoking Kulingile who was just worried about his captain and then Demane said "you don't keep out of danger either" and he was so clearly prepared to fight but then Laurence said "no you're right, my apologies, that was unfair of me" and Demane just. deflated. and went to sleep with Kulingile again. this kid! he's 16! and he's been fighting people his entire life and here is the captain who took him away from home and who he clearly looks up to and he's being unfair to you and then he apologises

tharkay/laurence being schrodinger's canon at the end is so fucking funny to me given that his reaction to his best friend coming out to him was "you should choose women. im so sorry."

As i get through League of Dragons, I begin to see why Laurence/Napoleon is so popular (if it wasn't already).
however, where people have gotten it wrong, i think, is that Laurence has never once even considered Napoleon romantically and/or sexually, while Napoleon dreams of that hot, wind-swept, noble British captain every single night

Granby's coming-out scene but Laurence and Tharkay got together somewhere in book 5 so the entire time Granby is painfully confessing, Laurence is fighting a violent war with himself over whether he should admit to his own sins or not and because one of his primary personality traits is being uncomfortable he accidentally becomes actively homophobic for five minutes. he cannot figure out how to correct this afterwards, which makes it really rather awkward when he goes to stay with his boyfriend as a Kept Man

yes Napoleon wants to fuck Laurence so bad it makes him look stupid but crucially he wants to seduce him. That's at least 80% of the point. Laurence has to come to him willingly and willing and wanting Napoleon in return. He would never force him or trick him or exchange submission for favours because that would defeat the whole point: he wants to corrupt the incorruptible. He doesn't want to break Laurence, he wants Laurence to bend.

Doing my first Temeraire reread and have finally reached Tharkay's introduction scenen in Black Powder War and guys. We all know what kind of first impression Tharkay made on Laurence but guys we have forgotten what Laurence currently looks like. The Allegiance was on fire a few hours ago, Laurence lost his coat and all of his clothes are soot stained. What I'm saying is - Tharkay walks into a room full of English gentlemen dressed for dinner, full fanciest-jacket-and-ironed-neckcloths all around, and the one he has to bring a message to is a) drunk as a skunk to cope with the East India Trading Company bigots insulting the Corps, b) wearing a chinese-style embroidered silk jacket fancy enough to please even Temeraire's tastes in eaveningwear, and c) most likely smells like a literal burning tar pit, because everything underneath that jacket is what he was wearing when they were putting the fire on the ship out. WHAT kind of first impression must Laurence have made on that poor man.

once again three cheers for Will Laurence parenting superior-officering Emily Roland under truly the wildest of circumstances for like 7 years and doing such a fantastic job of it. He was basically her primary caregiver from age 9 to 16 and no matter how she might gripe, he took his job so seriously and you can tell she appreciates it! She runs away from her official posting during the Invasion to come serve under him again because he treated her with respect and gave her responsibilities suited to her skills, and also he has modelled a set of principles that she clearly understands and agrees with even when she thinks he's going about it wrong. And she is so fully On His Side anyway, she's so righteously outraged on his behalf when people disrespect him, and like. that man is not her father but he is her dad. That night when she was 9 years old and afraid for her mother and Excidium and he was so gentle with her is so emblematic of his attitude to his "young gentlemen" in my opinion; he is firm and professional at all times but he pays attention, he knows his people's backgrounds and families and he is so invested in giving them the best possible chance at success, and it's clear to me that people respond to that! including the terrible teenagers he accidentally got roped into raising

It's super funny that Laurence learns that Catherine is pregnant and instantly ranks his colleagues by attractiveness.
