This little exchange right after Daniel uses the secret Miyagi paralysis technique on Johnny in their fight really encapsulates what’s so annoying about Daniel for me this season.
Johnny: Got any more dirty tricks up your sleeve?
Daniel: I’m not the one who fights dirty.
Setting aside the fact that Daniel chose to use this super secret technique that Mr. Miyagi didn’t even want him to know about in this stupid petty ego fight lol, what gets me is the way Daniel doesn’t even bother to argue that it’s not a dirty trick. It simply can’t be, because Daniel’s the one who did it and he’s the good guy, not the one who fights dirty! No need for him to ever think about whether he’s doing the right thing, because whatever the good guy does is right by definition. You know that if this had been a Cobra Kai technique and Johnny had used it here, Daniel would have been calling it a dirty trick. And in actuality, Johnny is not the one who fights dirty either, apart from the one time as a teenager when Kreese ordered him to, and we saw how conflicted he was about it. His good sportsmanship is one of his defining qualities. I know I’m nitpicking, but the blind self-righteousness on display in just this one line from Daniel is truly astounding.
