While a few in the city's government feared a husband would attempt to rule over the empress, Damiano has proven them all their worries were baseless. He cares little for politics and government, aside from the few things Isodora asks him to care about. He prefers to spend his days reading and collecting books, hunting, visiting charities and spending money on pretty boys for entertainment. He always gets a little drunk at palace events, providing his wife and her sisters, and anyone who wants to hear, with sarcastic commentary throughout the evening.

While his activities may make him seem shallow and arrogant, the truth is quite the opposite. Damiano is an intelligent man, with deep interests in science, humanity and literature. However, as a second son, he was always taught that his opinions didn't matter, that his interests were of no consequence and that he was simply required to be present. He never had any expectation of being politically active, as he was told repeatedly that his only functions were to be the spare and the one they could marry off to a wealthier city state. Not to mention the fact he was conditioned to never express his sexual and romantic desires.

As such, Damiano only expresses his true personality in private, surrounded by those he trusts, such as Isodora, Helena, Violetta and Valentino. He spends many evenings discussing Florena's economy with Helena, or sitting with the empress as she goes through her correspondence, giving comments and advice when she asks them of him.

He is a kind soul, who cares deeply about the less privileged. He sponsors two orphanages, a hospital and a convent that focuses on helping prostitutes find a new life. He has even been known to "kidnap" the valet of a member of the Privy Council after he found out the boy was being beaten regularly by his master, sending him to safety and confronting the count in question about his abuse. On holy days, he also goes incognito to distribute alms to the poor the entire day.

Isodora is young, beautiful, and a woman, and because of these factors, her opponents often imply she is unfit to rule. While the law of Florena allows for a woman to take the throne, it is without actual precedent and men have always been the preferred heirs.

At her ascension to the throne, there was vocal protest by a large group of the nobility of the city state. Instead of ignoring these protest, or reacting harshly, Isodora spoke to these men and listened to their grievances.

Barely three weeks after her coronation, a crisis broke out, as a neighboring city state called Sirra attacked Florena. The cities have been on the verge of war for several decades and they saw the coronation of a new empress as the perfect moment to attempt to destabilise Florena. Isodora acted swiftly, mobilising the army and repelling the attack, even going as far as addressing the troops herself before battle and refusing to return behind the city walls as her people fought. Striking the image of the courageous, patriotic warrior empress in her armor, Isodora earned the respect and love of many of those who first rejected her.

While there are still those who oppose her rule out of principle, Isodora is generally a popular figure both among the working class as well as the nobility.
