Too old to cosplay
Tumblr media
Photo: A 28-year-old cosplaying a 19-year-old while talking about cosplay and media representation.
Some years back, I felt like cosplay was a bit of an embarrassing hobby. That it was something I wasn’t actually supposed to be doing, because I was too old, because I wasn’t going anywhere with it, because there were so many other productive things I should spend my time doing. I basically felt like cosplay was embarrassing in the same way that having the same old ratty teddy bear in your bed for the last 25 years because you can’t sleep without it would be. Sort of endearing, but still a bit embarrassing. And definitely not appropriate for a Grown Up.
Now, I don’t know what has changed, exactly, but I’ve realised cosplay isn’t actually all that embarrassing. No more than, say, being 28 and still playing the guitar, or playing football, or painting as a hobby would be.
In a way I sometimes feel like there isn’t supposed to be room for creativity in your life after you turn 20. That once you’re out of your teens, you’re supposed to settle down and become the most stereotypical text-book version of an adult you can possibly think of - velour track suit, mortgage, steady job and a family of your own included.
That if you are over the age of twenty and still spend your time doing something creative, the people in your life will start to ask you questions. Like “where are you going with this?” Or “couldn’t you turn this into a job?”
It’s almost like creativity should always be monetised. Like it’s a fun thing to do when you’re younger, but a waste of time later in life, unless you find a way to financially benefit from it. Like you’re only allowed to be and do one thing as an adult, and that thing is usually your career.
All of the above is rubbish, of course. Creativity has a place in everyone’s lives, on all stages of life. The thing about creativity is that it’s so much more than just making things and potentially sometimes thinking outside the box a little. It’s a part of who you are.
Despite what a whole bunch of dodgy self-help books may say, I don’t think creativity, in its essence, can actually be learned. You can learn to DO creative things, can learn TO create, but the passion for it, the drive, the actual need to make something new? That has to be somewhere in you to begin with. And burying that passion somewhere within you, just because you’re supposed to be an “adult”, is one of the most tragic things anyone could possibly do.
So yes, I’m nearing thirty, and people might look at me funny when I tell them I cosplay. Co-workers may think I’m nuts when I post the occasional cosplay picture on my personal profile. But so what.
This hobby makes me happy. Making things makes me happy. Being a fan of things makes me happy.
And I’m pretty sure being happy is what most people are trying to do all the time anyway.

The devil’s right there in the details, and I say if you have the time and materials, go for weathering when you do armor! It could be a lot better than this, I know, but for a first cosplay armor, I’m pretty happy with it~

Foam to Leather (Tutorial)
Things you’ll need:
Brown craft foam
Aluminum foil
Clothes iron
Ironing board
Black paint
Brown paint (lighter than your foam)
Paint brush
Paper towel
Grab some aluminum foil and crumble it into a ball. Not too tight of a ball though! The next step is almost impossible if you do.
Tumblr media
Next, un-crumple the ball. Flatten it out into one layer. It’s fine if there are a few holes.
Tumblr media
Place it on top of your foam.
Tumblr media
Take your iron and firmly press it on the foam and aluminum. My iron was set to 3 (polyester) but the correct temperature may be different for other irons. Just remember not to use steam! Before doing this on a large piece, be sure to experiment and figure out what the best temperature and what the best pressure is. On larger pieces, you’ll have to move the aluminum around a lot. It’s not a quick process.
Tumblr media
Now you’ve got this crinkly affect on the foam. Next is painting!
Tumblr media
Grab you’re brush, black paint, and a dish with some water. The idea is to dilute the black paint enough so that when you apply it the paint will seep into the divets the aluminum created.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once the watery paint is applied, wipe it off with a paper towel. Continue to do this for your whole piece of foam.
Tumblr media
Now here’s an optional step (of which I haven’t done myself but I’ve known others who have):
Grab the light brown paint and, without diluting it, paint it on. It’s best to use a coarse brush in this case and to try to keep it out of the divets. Wipe some of the paint off.
Remember, imperfections are always good! Uneven paint isn’t necessarily bad so just experiment with it.
Here’s an example of a bracer I did with this method. The first two pictures are an example of the foam I began with and the rest show the end result. I hope this helps you guys out!

Fabric Choice for Cosplay panel. This is just the bare bones and the examples, since I talked about and explained things in person.
(One thing I’d like to add right here though, since I was asked about it in person — I don’t go into enough detail about the difference between dupioni and shantung. Dupioni is stiffer and more crinkly [it makes a rustling noise] as well as having a more pronounced surface texture; shantung is softer and suitable for draping [where dupioni isn’t] and has a smoother surface texture.)
Nothing in this panel is definitive, and the examples given (even of the different fabric types) are just that — examples. You will encounter many, many more types of fabric than this out in the wild, but this is meant to give you a general overview so you can hopefully find your way.
This information is for personal reference only, and not meant to be used for your own panel. You can share this/reblog this; just don’t re-present it as your own.
Here is a link to the pdf file of the presentation, in case this photoset is difficult to read. It’s slightly confusing but all I could get my computer to do, so here’s how you read it: the 4-slide pictures read left to right, top to bottom. The 2-slide pictures read top to bottom. The 4-slide pictures have to be read across first. I couldn’t get that to switch in the version of Reader I’m using, so sorry for any confusion. The pdf file should read correctly, with one slide per page.
If anyone has any questions, comments, or corrections, please let me know. :]
