137. “I’m not flipping a coin to decide whether or not I go to jail tonight.”
138. “That’s not on me, it’s on you.”

141. “And that makes it okay?”
142. “Are you afraid to die?”
143. “What would you do if I didn’t come back?”
144. “I just wanted a family.”
145. “So pick. Who do you hate more? Me or the man who killed your father?”
146. “Can you really blame me?”
147 “How could you do this?”
148 “Can you be the one to do it?”
149. “Does this mean what I think it means?”
150. “Are you leaving?”
151. “How do we fix this?”
152 “Would you hate me?”
153 “Do you want to die?”
154“How many more innocent people have to die?”
155 “Can you promise me no one else has to get hurt?”
156. “ stop doing that— stop trying to hide your emotions from me. ”
157 “ i can’t make you trust me. but i’m gonna stick around long enough for you to realize you can. ”
158 “Don’t just run off like that, you scared me.”
159 “ not everyone is just gonna become another scar. some people will stay, if you let them. ”
160. “ i feel like i’ve been living in a storm for so long, like i’m just drifting from wave or wave hoping i won’t drown. ”
161 “ what happened to you? what made you so scared to stay still long enough to let someone in? ”
162 “ i don’t wanna be scared anymore. ”
163 “Admitting that I’m right is always a good option.”
164 “ even when you smile, your eyes are still sad. ”

166“ every time i touch you, there’s a moment where you look like you think it will hurt. ”
167 “ why aren’t you scared of me? ”
168. “ you’d accept a caress from the same hands that leave you bruised, just to feel warm. ”
169. “ i’ll kill anyone that makes you hurt like that again. i’d kill them just for taking your smile. ”
170. “ i want to keep you all to myself. i don’t want anyone but us to know the things we do in secret. ”
171. “ yes. i killed them— but i did it for you. ”
172.“ i had to do it. no one gets to make you sad and get away with it. ”

182. “I spent every day thinking about you..”
183. “Did you really have to do that to me?”
184. “How do you expect me to forget what you’ve done!”

How to Create Horror
Tumblr media
Horror, romance, and comedy - three of the most underrated genres, in my opinion. Of course, genre fiction as a whole is still sneered at by many literary critics (and some authors of literature). While I could rant about that for a while, I won’t - I’ll simply say that I feel this disdain is unwarranted. Horror, comedy, and romance are some of the most difficult forms of writing to get right - fear, humour, and intimacy are so subjective that there is no formula for authors to follow.
Of course, there are some things which are more likely to be frightening to the average person - torture, death, supernatural occurrences, and the horror genre relies heavily on these themes. Yet it is those stories which take a less travelled road which often make a real mark. Why are movies like Hereditary and books like Cujo considered more frightening by so many than movies like Paranormal Activity and books like The Haunting of Hill House?
Defining Horror
Horror, in its simplest form, is a literary genre which aims to create fear, shock, or disgust (Reyes, X,. 2016). Of course, there’s more to it than this - some split horror into subgenres. Todorov states that horror can be split into the uncanny, marvellous, and fantastic (Prohaszkova, V,. 2012), while many others note that horror differs from terror.
Horror fiction creates a sense of revulsion or shock at events that have already occurred, while terror fiction creates anticipatory fear or dread before an event happens. Either way, of course, the common denominator is fear.
The difference between stories like Hereditary and Cujo, and stories The Haunting of Hill House and Paranormal Activity is, in my opinion, partly in the ways that they create terror rather than horror. The other part is proximity - the former stories bring you in close to pervert otherwise safe, healthy situations and dynamics, and then give you a front-row seat to what happens when things go wrong. The latter offer ‘safe’ fear, through avoyeuristic view of events which have already occurred and give a more detached point of view. Interestingly, these stories are both supernatural in nature - supernatural horror is now pretty loaded with expectation, which makes it hard to create the real shock needed for a good, proper scar. So, distance, expectation, content, and context all impact the way we interact with and feel horror. Read More

Words of power and magic have long had an effect on believers. The first known mention of the magical word ABRA CADABRA was in the third century AD in a book called Liber Medicinalis. The word, when written upside down and worn on the body, was thought to have the power to cure illnesses, and was used by Roman emperors.

6 (More) Steps to Write Great Sex: The Erotica Author Edit
Tumblr media
The original “6 Steps to Write Better Sex” remains one of my best-performing articles - this tells me that there is a need not being filled (oo-er) amongst writers. Writing about sex can feel a little taboo, depending on the topic and your predilections, but it shouldn’t be a total mystery. Of course, the fact that so many of the writers who follow me on social media have a million questions about writing sex the minute they find out that I write erotica under a pseudonym is indicative of a deeper issue… or two, in fact.
One, many writers want to be able to write about sex in realistic, honest, and compelling terms. Tw0, they feel ill-equipped to do so. Whether this is a lack of writing confidence or a lack of sexual information and confidence I can’t say, but I can provide six more tips for those looking to write great sex!
Don’t Be Afraid of Filth
Depending on the “rating” you’d give your story, e.g. adult/mature or explicit, I don’t expect you’ll be seeking erotica writing tips for a YA novel, you shouldn’t be afraid of a little vulgarity. While I wouldn’t recommend that you take your direction from porn, you should keep in mind that it is a part of modern culture. Most adults don’t expect to read about sex in proper medical terminology (too stuffy) or mild, childish euphemisms (somehow worse, and a little creepy depending on the language). Instead, they expect a certain level of vulgarity. If you cringe writing the word “cock” I’ll kindly suggest that erotica isn’t the genre for you.
Of course, getting “filthy” isn’t just about language, it can be about the content too. Hold your horses, there, I’m not talking about weird and wonderful kinks or hardcore acts; I mean actual messiness and dirt. If you’re writing about a couple who get… eh, Intimate, on a camping trip there’s no reason not to acknowledge the dirt, sweat, and bugs. Of course, I wouldn’t dwell on it - you want the scene to be sexy (unless you don’t, not all sex is sexy after all) and that means a certain amount of displacement from the reality of getting it on with pinecones jammed into your back.
“Lick, Laugh, Lust” aka Humor Belongs in the Bedroom
Sex is often treated as a deadly serious endeavour - as if a slight misstep will ruin the moment. While a mistake can certainly ruin a fantasy anyone whose been lucky enough to have a partner they feel really safe will could tell you that a mistake that ruins a fantasy doesn’t have to ruin the night. Laughter is good - it’s good for the body, our mental and emotional health, good for the soul, and I would say probably one of the best things for a relationship.
If you’re writing a sex scene to be arousing, laughter might not be the best medicine. If you’re writing a sex scene to inform character development and create an intimate relationship in the story, laughter could be exactly what you need. A slip of the hand, bashing teeth, leaning on your partner’s hair (even a queef or two) these things are indicators of the state of a relationship; if your characters can laugh it off and keep going, they’ll be showing a healthy, trusting, and loving dynamic.
