Leland opened his eyes to the sight of morning sunlight streaming through the bedroom window. He lazily turned over only to find the rest of the bed vacant. Slowly sitting up he rubbed his groggy eyes and squinted in the sunlight. The sound of Keiko's sweet laughter was heard from the other room, bringing a smile to Leland's face.
Finally forcing himself out of bed Leland made his way down the hallway to find Bill and Keiko in the kitchen. They both hummed along to music from the radio as they prepared different foods for breakfast.
"Good morning," Leland said, making his way over to Keiko and wrapping his arms around her waist to hug her from behind.
"Good morning, Lee," she replied as he pressed a kiss to her temple, causing her to smile as she stirred the scrambled eggs.
"Good morning sleepyhead," Bill teased, snaking his arm around Leland's waist as he squeezed past him to grab the dishes out of the cupboard.
As Bill whisked past him with a stack of plates, he handed Leland a half full mug of coffee.
"Thanks Billy," he said, leaning back against the counter and taking a sip of the coffee while he watched Bill set four places around the table.
Keiko had finished the scrambled eggs and scraped them out of the pan into a serving dish. She grabbed the dish and made her way over to the dining table, softly placing her hand on the small of Bill's back as she sat the eggs down next to the plate of sausages.
"Will you go wake Hiroshi," she asked, moving to untie her apron from her waist.
"Of course," he replied, disappearing down the hallway and into Hiroshi's room.
Keiko returned to the kitchen to hang up her apron and Leland placed his coffee mug on the countertop, turning up the volume of the radio that sat in the corner of the kitchen. He reached out to take Keiko's hand and spun her around.
"Lee,' Keiko said playfully with a smile.
Leland just smiled back as he pulled her closer, swaying together to the music. She looked up at him with that look of hers that melted his heart in an instant. As they swayed to the rhythm, he was reminded of the night he had first realized he was in love with her. Dancing in harmony at the military ball despite what anyone else thought.
A few moments later Bill appeared from the hallway carrying Hiroshi on his hip. Bill sat Hiroshi in the booster chair as Lee and Keiko made their way over to take their seats at the dining table with them. Everyone took their own servings before Bill shoveled some eggs on Hiroshi's plate and Keiko cut up a sausage for him.
They made comfortable small talk while they ate— that embarrassing thing Puckett had done, the business trip they had coming up to collect data on the titans.
It was times like this Leland was most grateful for. Away from the danger of hunting titans. Away from the pressures he faced from the military. Only if it was just these brief, private moments he got to steal away with the people he loved most. Listening to Hiroshi giggle as he played with the chopped-up bits of sausage. Bill's enthusiasm as he explained a topic he was passionate about, despite the fact that Lee could barely keep up with his scientific jargon. The glimmer in Keiko's eyes as she intently listened to him, all while trying to get Hiroshi to stop playing with his food.
Soon, however, breakfast was over, and Keiko was collecting the dishes from the table.
"Aren't you getting big," Bill said, pretending to struggle as he lifted Hiroshi from the booster chair, "come on, let's go get you dressed before the nanny get here."
As they disappeared into Hiroshi's bedroom Leland returned to their own bedroom to get ready for the day. He was slow about putting his work clothes on, dragging out his routine because he was not ready to leave the comfort of their home. He sighed as he looked in the mirror to fix his collar. He wished this part of the day would never end. That he would never have to return the pressures of the real world, pretending that this life of theirs didn't exist outside of these walls. However, he knew how important the work they were doing was and he couldn't think of anyone he'd rather do it with than Bill and Keiko. Oh, how lucky he was to have gotten assigned to Keiko's mission. How lucky they were to have run into Bill out there.
After fixing his hair one last time he made his way out of the bedroom and to the front door where his jacket hung on the hooks.
"Well, I better get going," he said, shrugging his jacket on and making his way over to where Keiko was washing the dishes, loosely wrapping an arm around her waist and pressing a kiss to her cheek. He then turned to find Bill in the living room and pressed a kiss to his cheek as well.
"I'll see you both at work," he said as he went back over to the door.
"Bye Lee," Keiko called from the kitchen.
"We'll see you in a bit," Bill added.
With that Leland went out the door and got into his car, turning the key in the ignition and pulling out of the driveway. As he drove away, he looked back at the house in the rearview mirror with a smile. All he could think was:
'How did I get so lucky?'
