"Consumer Rabbit Hole"
Tumblr media
The New York Times again addressed a frustrating topic for shoppers: visiting mattress showrooms, asking, "Is there any home purchase more confusing and fraught with anxiety than buying a mattress?"
The genesis of Create-A-Mattress was the recognition that mattress shopping is needlessly, relentlessly, and deliberately confusing.
Our mission is to turn the industry on its head by offering a simple, honest process that puts buyers in control.
While many still cling to the conventional wisdom that preaches visiting a showroom before buying, the list of counter-points grows stubbornly longer.
"...to choose the right one, shoppers must navigate a Kafkaesque maze..."
Why do stores operate this way? Because there are a few basic truths that serve the sellers' interests:
You can't see what's inside, so you have to trust the sales person. Of course, that sales person is motivated to sell what makes the most money for the store, regardless of the buyer's needs.
Comparison shopping is futile. Every store gets a different name for the same models. Savvy shoppers who try to comparison shop will eventually give up, capitulating to the stores' exhausting tactics.
Painfully similar branding conventions are dizzying. Not only does everything look confusingly similar, they sound even moreso. Every layer of fluffy stuff has a pretentious brand name (we just call ours "fluffy stuff").
It might look like a sea of "white rectangles" to shoppers. But through the stores' eyes, they're currency in different denominations. Stores perform a carefully choreographed stage show, designed to bring shoppers through a sequence that leads to the store's most profitable outcome. The first model shoppers "try" in the store is usually a "straw man" designed to make the next ones seem dramatically better in comparison. Alternately, they may start with the top of the line model that's way out of budget, and then to a series that will pale in comparison, prompting shoppers to reconsider their budget ceiling.
While the internet has revolutionized how cars are bought and sold, the mattress industry remains impenetrable.
The sad truth is that too many consumers actually cannot make the right choice after visiting the store. Exchange claim rates in some stores are over 30%, meaning about one of every three buyers has remorse. In surveys, over half had lingering doubts they made the right choice.
If you want a different experience, we hope you'll try Create-A-Mattress. Choose your size, pick your materials and features, and we'll make and deliver your mattress nationwide. Great quality. Discount prices. No razzmatazz.

FCC Protecting and Promoting the Open Internet
Tumblr media
Please visit this site to add your comments.
Protecting and Promoting the Open Internet
Honorable FCC Commission Members,
Thank you for this open comment period.
As an entrepreneur with a small ecommerce business in a market dominated by giants, a future world under a priority paid bandwidth system would likely force the closure of my business.  More likely, I never would have started it.
I ask you to think not in terms of "blocking" access, or "bifurcating" the marketplace, but rather in terms of all the myriad implications the advantage of speed itself offers.  It's about much more than how long it takes to download a movie, it's also the ability to make known that any content supported by multimedia even exists, even for ordinary commerce categories.
We live in a search engine-driven world.  All content is accessed via search.  While search algorithms are confidential trade secrets, it's widely believed that download speed is a critical signal that search engines like Google use in determining the rank order for results.  Google's interest is having satisfied users who trust the links, and if immediacy of gratification is part of that user satisfaction equation, then Google will weigh it in ranking organic results.
Therefore innovative startups challenging established giants would effectively have a double burden -- not just the burden of requiring users to be more patient for identical content, also the burden of having to overcome a search rank handicap.  Between the two, the long term burden of the search rank handicap may actually be far greater and more difficult to overcome, effectively stifling innovation even in commodity industries.
As an example, my ecommerce website offers custom-made home furnishings.  Having rich photography and an engaging presentation is vital in building consumer trust for an expensive purchase.  In a world of priority payments, giant furniture chains with deep pockets can make their pages richer, and/or deliver them faster, and as a direct result they will consistently rank higher on search results, and thereby have an enormous competitive advantage.  Even if I have a higher quality offering at a lower price, it will be significantly harder for me to just reach the marketplace in the sense that consumers who click on a link above mine will never see or know of my link's existence.
Search experts affirm it's impossible to overstate the far-reaching implications of even a small speed advantage.  Therefore, the core of this issue is not about bifurcation of the marketplace, but the formidable barriers to competitive entry and therefore innovation that even a small speed advantage brings.
It's hard to imagine a fairness doctrine that justifies such an imbalanced system on the basis of ability to pay for access to the marketplace itself.  It's harder to imagine where we'd be tomorrow without the innovative startups of yesterday who enjoyed the benefit of an open marketplace to achieve their greatness of today, (talkin'bout you, netflix!).
Some may say the night sky would be just as grand with only a few stars of super brightness, collectively shining with the same luminocity.  I suggest the night sky is unspeakably more wonderous, more enchanting, more inviting, more mysterious, more inspiring, more harmonious, and ultimately better for humankind now and in the future with infinite variability.
Thank you again for allowing this open comment period for this critical matter that may very well determine the survival of the innovation economy itself, the engine of American prosperity for generations.
Respectfully,
  Evan Saks
Needham, MA

You'll Flip for Our One-Sided Mattresses!
Built from the Ground Up for Comfort
One-sided mattresses mean saying goodbye to the days of straining yourself to turn over a big, heavy mattress. New one-sided mattresses never have to be flipped; they're built in layers from the ground up for lasting comfort and support.
If you haven't shopped for a mattress in a while, this could be a surprise. For many years, mattresses were commonly two-sided. Around 2000 one major brand introduced one-sided mattresses, and the other brands quickly followed. In research, most customers said they weren’t flipping their mattresses anyway, and considered the idea of a “no-flip” mattress to be an advantage. These days, no matter where you shop, two-sided mattresses have virtually disappeared from the market.
Today’s one-sided mattresses can be engineered with modern materials, like latex foam and visco memory foam, in a specific layered sequence. As a result, one-sided mattresses are thicker, and heavier than before because there’s more “good stuff” inside. That extra weight makes them much harder to lift anyway, so few people could flip them over even if they tried, especially for king or even queen sizes.
All Create-A-Mattress custom made mattresses, like all major brand mattresses, are one-sided. We recommend rotating them head to foot for even wear, starting every few weeks at the beginning, then a couple times a year (according to the care instructions). We know you’ll agree these one-sided mattresses are the most comfortable, and most supportive you’ve ever tried.

Every so often, another news story exposes local mattress stores and major chains selling old/used mattresses as new. It's a very easy story to film because just about every store does it, so they can go almost anywhere (rarely to an advertiser's store!) and get the footage.
It's so common that many states don't even ban the practice, they simply limit the length of time it's allowed to be used in a customer's home before it can no longer be re-sold as "new" -- generally 30-60 days. Even those regulations are almost never enforced, tempting retailers to take mattresses that were used and returned, and re-bag them and re-sell them to another customer.
When you buy from Create-A-Mattress, you can have 100% confidence this will never happen to you. When you place an order, we make your mattress according to your spex, and it goes straight onto a truck to your home. We do not have any physical inventory, no standing warehouses, and no damaged ("clearance") merchandise.

Labor Day: Busiest Delivery Weekend of the Year
Tumblr media
It's almost here. Labor Day. Here in Boston and elsewhere, it's synonymous with minivans double-parked clogging traffic around the college campuses.
In addition, most apartment leases run from Sept to Sept. It's also the date cutoff in many towns to attend public schools.  Together, it makes for the busiest weekend of the year for home deliveries of mattresses, furniture, appliances, and other consumer goods.
On the roads and waiting at home, please be patient, and remember the delivery professional are working as hard as anyone these days, facing many of the same traffic snarls.
If you're on the schedule, a cold glass of water and a smile go a long way to making your delivery experience smooth and effortless this Labor Day.

NEW! Cool Gel Memory Foam
Tumblr media
How could we possibly improve the best memory foam mattresses on the market?
Add gel. And more memory foam.
Introducing the new Create-A-Mattress gel foam, available in 9", 11" and 13" thicknesses, and all standard and custom sizes too.
With the popularity of gel foam at retail stores (primarily Serta iComfort), we were frequently asked about gel foam. The gel keeps the memory foam cooler and more comfortable.  Plus a higher ratio of memory foam than any other.
This new product line offers more memory foam, with thicker cuts of gel foam, for much less than any major brand.  Plus it's chemical-free, and among the most eco-friendly on earth, certified by Certi-Pur.
See for yourself, or ask us about gel memory foam in any size for the softest, coolest night's sleep you've ever had.

Burning Question About Mattress Safety
Tumblr media
We are often asked about chemicals used in mattress manufacturing, specifically the ones used to meet the fire safety law.
For decades, mattresses were the most flammable object in American homes, responsible for hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries and tens of millions of dollars in fire damage. Conventional foams are made from petroleum, and metal coils provide lots of space for oxygen circulation, creating an ideal environment for flammability.
The greatest risk is what's called the "flashover effect," in which it gets so hot so quickly inside, the entire mattress bursts into flames at once, making it virtually impossible for people to escape safely.
Starting in 2007, all mattresses sold in the US are required by law to meet a new fire safety standard designed to slow the spread of fire. The mattress may still burn, but will not reach flashover, giving people critical time to escape safely.
There is lots of information -- and misinformation -- online about the materials used to provide this vital protection from home fires. The primary method used by the vast majority of manufacturers applies a spray-on boric acid mixture to one of the internal components, well under the surface (an alternate method uses wool, which is more expensive and potentially changes the surface feel).
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission set the standards, and determined there is no adverse health effects associated with the use of any flame retardant chemicals.
According to government estimates, the new fire standard saves about 250 American lives every year, plus hundreds more injuries, and countless costs from fire damage. Meanwhile, there are zero established cases of any deaths or illnesses from any of these materials.
While it's easy to understand why buyers are concerned about the use of chemicals in mattress manufacturing, the greatest alarm is heard from sources with expensive products to sell, which should call into question the veracity of their assertions, as they have a profit motive to overstate the potential risks.
As always, we endeavor to explain mattress construction issues openly and honestly, and welcome questions on this important topic.

International Sizes
Tumblr media
We're often asked if we can make international sizes, like a European Queen size mattress or an Asian King size mattress.
Of course, the answer is yes we can.
However, international standards are not consistent, so it's very important to measure and confirm.
In all cases, customers are responsible for providing accurate dimensions, and we're responsible for building to the dimensions provided.
If you need to convert dimensions from metric CMs to US inches, just click this link for the Google converter, and always round down (eg: 200cm = 78.7402 inches, round down to 78 inches)

Do you make custom size mattresses?
We've had a string of recent inquiries asking if we make custom size mattresses.  Of course, we specialize in custom sizes and offer all of the support materials featured on our website in custom sizes.  If that wasn't clear before, we tweaked the home page copy to make sure it's clear now.
We can make any width up to 76" and any length up to 84" using traditional coils, isolation coils, latex, memory foam, and even futons. So we have plenty of choices for your antique, European, custom-built, and homemade bedroom furniture.
Plus, for customers ordering custom size mattresses, we're glad to make a high quality waterproof mattress pad in the same custom size at no extra charge.  Often, finding custom size accessories remains a formidable challenge for customers buying custom size mattresses.

Only in America
We are very proud that all of our mattresses and futons are made right here in the USA. It's most important for memory foam, since most other memory foam products come from Asia, with questionable quality, and suspicious manufacturing processes.
That's why we were so embarrassed recently when a customer purchased a waterproof mattress pad from Create-A-Mattress, which was marked made in the USA, and wrote to express her disappointment when the package arrived and it said "Made in China."
In fact, the manufacturer very recently shifted production from the US to China, and we were not notified of the change, so the claim was true as recently as a few weeks ago. Nonetheless, it was not true at the time this customer purchased.
Therefore, we honored our "100% or 100 bucks" guarantee, and refunded the customer $100 for catching this error. Just as importantly, we offered sincere apologies, and removed the claim from the website within 24 hours.
Isn't that really what you expect from an honorable business? Caught in an honest error that wasn't even our fault, we did what we hope every company would do - we immediately apologized, issued a credit, and corrected the information.
We often say it's easy to provide great customer service when everything goes smoothly. The true test of a company's commitment to customer service comes when things don't go exactly as planned.

WCVB (Boston ABC affiliate) reporter John Atwater visited the factory where Create-A-Mattress mattresses are made for a news story on the fragile state of the economy. I like the way they made it seem like we own the entire factory, but the truth is it's owned by one of the major mattress brands, and our mattresses are made there by contract.

Shaq Treated for Sleep Apnea
Tumblr media
When 7+ foot, 300+ pound NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal snores, it probably measures on the Richter scale. Kidding aside, sleep apnea is a serious disorder  affecting millions of Americans - many of whom don't know how severe their condition might be. Sleep apnea is a problem that interrupts breathing during sleep, denying your body the deep sleep and restorative rest it needs to maintain proper health, and slowly sapping your strength and productivity. (Not to mention the effects it has on your partner!)
If you are suffering from sleep symptoms, there are sleep centers in every major city who can diagnose and treat a variety of disorders.
A new mattress can also help you sleep comfortably in a healthy position to maintain proper breathing.
Nothing will improve your quality of life more than sleeping well on a regular basis!
