Were you wondering what Rupert was filming in Italy recently?
Well, wonder no more!
Verona is a pop Romeo & Juliet musical, starring Clara Rugaard, Jamie Ward, Rebel Wilson, Rupert Everett, Jason Isaacs and Derek Jacobi.
It "will be the first film in a original pop musical trilogy based around the real-life 1301 story that inspired Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. A wide theatrical release this Christmas is being planned."

3. London, UK. Rupert Graves and James Wilby at event promoting their film “Maurice”. September 1987.
‘There’s no model for Cain’s character, but if I had to name someone, I’d say I briefly thought of Rupert Graves who played Freddy in A Room With A View. (He was a bit off when he played Alec in Maurice, though.) His expressive eyebrows, the mysterious way he stares at his elder sister, Lucy, after playing tennis with her, his cunning yet innocent puppy-like smiles, and the way he pushes his hair back with his fingers left a strong impression on me. ♥ I’m sure the director of that film adored Rupert because he was so lovingly filmed in so many long scenes. (His swimming scenes were especially drawn out.)’
– Kaori Yuki, artist/writer/creator of the Victorian Gothic shōjo manga series The Cain Saga (1991–), on her inspiration for its young protagonist, Earl Cain C. Hargreaves.

The first trailer has been released for the film Rupert recently shot in Greece, Σμύρνη μου Αγαπημένη (Smyrna My Beloved) and there’s a couple of glimpses of his character in it. Not sure of his name yet but judging by the trailer he’s American.
Other notable British guest stars appearing are Susan Hampshire and Jane Lapotaire.
Full details of the film are available on the production company’s website (tanweerproductions.com/video/smyrna-my-beloved/)
ETA: I’m going to take an educated guess here that Rupert is playing George Horton, the American Consul General in Smyrna at the time.
I’m delighted to announce - at the end of Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK and the middle of Mental Health Awareness Month in the US - that this year the chosen charity for Rupert’s birthday on June 30th is Young Minds (youngminds.org.uk) - “the UK’s leading charity fighting for children and young people’s mental health”.
The pandemic has been hard on everybody’s mental health but young people have had an especially tough time of it, with so much added stress at a formative time of their lives, particularly those who are at crucial qualification stages of their education. With 5 kids, Rupert and Susie have had first hand experience of just how hard it’s been!
As usual everything will be done through JustGiving (justgiving.com/fundraising/RupertGravesBirthday2021) so all the money will go directly to the charity and Rupert will be able to read all the well-wishes left for him there. We’ll also be having the very popular fanworks auction again so look out for the sign-ups to donate things for that coming very shortly!
Thanks in advance to all of you who contribute in any way and please do reblog this post (and future ones!) to help spread the word!
This is one of those things I’d given up as a “probably never get to see” - o ye of litle faith! The director, Susannah Doyle, linked to it today as part of the wider ongoing discussion around the tragic case of Sarah Everard saying, “How awful the language of No Responsibility still prevails.”
