“Jesus fucking – ” Mateo fumbled back a step as the tree of a man practically launched himself in front of him as he strode into the cafe. He was certain if he had walked another step further he would’ve pissed himself. “O-Oh, yes ! Of course ! Sorry about that. You startled me a little there.” A little ? No. Absolutely not. A lot. His eyes raked up the skyscraper of a man briefly as his hand met his in a firm, professional clasp. A lot, a lot. “Mateo Ricci, sir. Most people just call me Mat.”
Tumblr media
Canyon forgot that his height and enthusiasm could sometimes be a little off putting when he first met people and clearly that had happened here.  “Sorry about that, I spend a lot of time doing this sort of thing and I get a little excited sometimes.”  He smiled and gestured for the other man to sit, “It’s nice to meet you Mat, you can call me Canyon, none of that sir stuff, please, I like to keep things casual.”  He smiled and pulled out a binder he’d brought with him, containing the details for the event, “It’s a pretty basic event, a local church has a program where they donate beds to families who can’t afford them, they were brought to my attention a while ago and we’re going to be hosting the event at my house, so it’ll be forma and it shouldn’t get to crazy.  You’ll be getting paid directly by me so the donated funds go straight to the program, I’d probably need you for about six hours, at whatever rate you usually charge, you came highly recommended, so any rate is fine with me, what do you say?”

“I’ll be sure to remind you of that next time you want to do something that’s really beneficial and for a good cause. I’ll say ‘Canyon, don’t even BOTHER being a gracious host to raise money for the kids or for the ocean because in the end it just isn’t worth the destruction.’ Her tone was entirely sarcastic, a playful smirk evident on her lips as she swat at his arm, “Come on, you big baby. I’ll help you clean up. It’ll be fun.”
Tumblr media
Canyon elbowed her in a good-natured way and laughed, “You know as well as I do that I’m going to keep this up, I’m just never letting a group of drunk strangers into my house ever again.  Now that I say that, I don’t know why I thought it was a good idea in the first place, but we did raise a lot of money, next time I’ll just rent a place and save my carpets the hassle.  At least they stayed off the third floor, if they’d trashed my daughter’s room or my bedroom, I would have to throw down.”

“Honestly. I’m not having this. I told you I’d plan and organise it for free, too but no, then you wouldn’t have had to clean any shit up. Now, you’ve got beer in, around and on your toilet - and I don’t just mean fresh beer - and I won’t even tell you about the rug. You should listen to a gal’ when she’s trying to help you out next time.”
“But anyway, no offence Can, but can’t you just get Georgia’s best cleaner on speed dial or something? And is River here?”
Tumblr media
“I know,” Canyon said with a groan, “I don’t know why I don’t listen to you. I’m used to handling it all myself, I figured it would be easier if we did did it at my place, I really didn’t expect people to take it as an invitation to trash everything, but I guess I should have.”  He sighed, “I guess I really can’t complain though, we raised a lot of money and since I covered it all, all the proceeds are going where they’re supposed to, but...yeah, I’ll hire someone to take care of this.  River is here, yes, she’s upstairs, she stayed at a friend’s house that night and I kept the third floor blocked off, so our bedrooms were untouched, but the rest of this place...yuck.”

Looking at the man Cooper hands over the cover he had picked up for him.  “ I think I did try and warn you didn’t I?” He asked as he looked at hip sipping his coffee. “ If there is anything I can do to help just let me know.”
Tumblr media
“You did, but I thought it would cut down on costs if I didn’t have to pay for a venue, and it would have if people hadn’t taken it as an invitation to tear the place apart.  The only good thing is that they left the third floor alone, so River’s stuff and my bedroom are fine, but this was a charity gala, not a frat house, who does that?”

Looking at the other, they cocked their eyebrow and hummed. “Are you really.. complaining about throwing a charity event?” they asked. “Like yeah I get that it must be stressful and a lot of work. But charity is something you should do with clear intentions. Not just sit and whine whenever it get’s too overwhelming”
Tumblr media
“Let me clarify here,” Canyon said, rubbing his eyes again and looking back at them, “My issue is not with throwing the event, that is what I do, and I’m not going to stop, I’ve lived a very privileged life and it’s my duty to give back and I’m happy to do so.  My issue, is with the fact that I invited people into my home and they elected to tear the place apart.  Maybe I’m mistaken, but that seems like something a group full of grown adults should know better than to do.”

“Alright, if you ever hear me saying that I want to host a charity gala at my house again, I want you to remind me of this moment and the massive headache I’ve got from trying to put things back in order.  Now that I think about it, it might just be easier to move.”

Canyon had owned a house in Crownsville for nearly 15 years, and he’d been living in it for the past 10, so he’d never had a need to stay at the Crown House, but he’d hosted a handful of charity events there and it was always a great spot.  He’d gotten to know the owner thanks to all the set up those events needed, and since he paid the expenses himself, it was important to be on good terms with the person he was paying.  “Dang,” he said, nodding his approval at the food laid out, “this is an impressive spread.  What’s the occasion?”
Tumblr media
The Crown House B&B had been generating a lot of revenue within the past couple of months, so much so, that investors had been reaching out to the Barnes for the possibility of opening up a sister bed and breakfast in Savannah. Thus, the Barnes had to close down the establishment for a couple days as she had various agents check out the space for a few days. With the open houses finally wrapping up, she had texted a few friends to help her get rid of the surplus of food that was left over. “Enjoy this beautiful arrangement please and take if off my hands, I beg of you,” she chuckled before reaching for strawberry from the fruit tray.

If there was one thing Canyon was terrible at, it was saying no to his daughter, so if she wanted to have dinner out that night, he was going to make it happen.  In truth, he actually preferred this, as he typically had to rely on his live-in staff to feed them, and he liked the chance to give them the night off once in a while.  River had run off to find the bathroom and Canyon was waiting for her to come back so they could be assigned a table, when the waitress crashed into him.
He was a bit startled by the commotion, but he was unharmed and was more concerned about her, “It’s alright, no harm done.  It looks like you guys are pretty busy tonight, I don’t blame you for being distracted.  You’re not hurt, are you?”

❝ 𝙔𝙀𝘼𝙃, 𝙄'𝙇𝙇 𝙂𝙀𝙏 𝙏𝙃𝘼𝙏 right for you ! ❞ the brunette says with a bright smile on her face, taking a few steps backwards as she spoke and ( of course ) found herself crashing into someone behind her. almost instantly, the smile turns into concern as she puts her attention onto the person she’d unfortunately bumped into. ❝ i am so so sorry ! i wasn’t paying attention and had no idea that you were behind me– which is probably what i get for not looking where i was going and just– ❞ she was rambling. one of her terribly bad habits, but something annalise can’t stop herself from doing, ❝ – sorry. ❞

Canyon, rather than having a traditional job, spent most of his time organizing and throwing charity events.  It wasn’t an unusual line of work for a member of a wealthy family to fall into, but Canyon took it a step further by personally covering all the expenses and hiring the staff himself to ensure all the funds that were donated went where they were supposed to. That was why he was here today, he was organizing another event, this time one that was being held in his home and he was looking for someone to work at the bar he was planning to set up.  He’d asked around town and set up a meeting at a coffee shop with someone who’d been highly recommended, despite being so new in town.
When a man matching the description he’d been given arrived, Canyon stood up and reached out to shake his hand.  “Hi, are you Mateo? I’m Canyon, we talked on the phone earlier about the bar tending job, right?” @mateofcks

Hey everyone! I’m Kitty, and I’m very excited to introduce you to Canyon.  I’ll post a few things that might be nice to know about him here and you can all feel free to message me to plot at any time.  I’ve been stalking this group for a while now and I’m finally taking the plunge and joining you!
Canyon’s grandfather was an oil tycoon named Theodore Pennington, who had 7 sons and over 30 grandchildren of which Canyon was the youngest.
His father was a middle child and “rebelled” by marrying a woman who would be described today as “crunchy” though back then she was called a “hippie.”  She would encourage her four children to embrace their wealth and privileged background, but insisted they always remember to give back to the world, as they were very lucky.
Canyon has three older siblings, a sister named Briar, and twin brothers named Fox and Falcon.
His parents and extended family live in Texas, but Canyon and his brothers were sent to the St. Albans school in Washington DC when they turned 8 years old and would return there every school year until they graduated at 18.
Canyon purchased a house in Crownsville after he was accepted to a Emory University in Atlanta, where he received a degree in Economics, but didn’t move in permanently until he was 22.
Not long after moving in, Canyon’s girlfriend discovered she was pregnant, and their differing opinions on how to handle the situation led to the demise of their relationship.  She wanted to have the baby, but put it up for adoption, while he wanted to raise the child himself, in the end, they split up and Canyon was given full custody of the little girl he named River Hope.
River is now 7 years old and is the light of Canyon’s life.  Everything he does, he does with her, she’s his date at every charity function he throws or attends, he’s a hands-on volunteer at her school, and even co-coaches a coed little league team she plays on, despite not being very good at the game.
He doesn’t have a job, exactly, as he lives off a huge trust fund and makes a lot of money from the stocks he was left in his grandfather’s will, but he is a very charitable person and loves to help people out and works with many local charities, as well as some bigger ones in the area.
