Creative Carbon - Still-life: Contact sheets
For my creative carbon still-life image, my concept was based on how the fashion industry is one of the biggest causes of climate change. Several tonnes of clothing goes to landfill each year, especially from fast fashion. This is why buying second hand and vintage clothing is much more ethical and sustainable.
My plan was to create a pile of clothing to replicate clothing being thrown away, I also wanted to show fabric scissors on top of the pile to convey that old clothing can be reworked into new clothing, resulting in less waste.
For my background, I used black plastic bin bags which I had used for a previous project. I used this to add to the whole throwing away clothing concept and to convey that these clothes are being thrown away.
I experimented using different lighting angles to create stronger shadows and highlights. I also put the camera on a tripod and set a slow shutter speed to utilise the painting with light technique.

Creative Carbon - Plan
For the creative carbon brief I struggled to find a group of place which I could photograph as I contacted a few different groups and didn't hear back. However I will be photographing a new sustainable vintage clothing store called 'The Vintage Scene'
The store is located in Glasgow city centre and are allowing me to take photos in the store. All of their stock is vintage, second-hand or up cycled and reworked making it a sustainable and climate friendly shop.
I plan to get many different photos of the clothes and the interior plus exterior of the shop to show the large selection they offer.

Editorial - Contact sheets
Below is contact sheets from my editorial shoot. As I was restricted to space I mainly focused on the face of the model as this was the main subject anyway.
I experimented with many different lighting positions throughout the whole shoot to achieve the best and most dramatic style of lighting.

Editorial - Shoot Plan
For the editorial brief, I have chosen to shoot in studio using my own lighting equipment, background etc. I will be photographing my boyfriend who has said he will model for me.
My concept for this shoot is largely inspired by photographer Dion Bal who creates many high fashion editorial images. Many of his images show the model being slightly underexposed with dramatic lighting which I aim to try for this shoot.
I plan to show the model with eyeshadow on as well as chains and jewellery wrapped around his face.
Examples of Dion Bals work below:

Lighting up the Dark - Final Image
I likes this image the most out of all of the ones I shot. I think the slight highlight on the tree created by the flashlight has added a really interesting soft look to it.
I also really like the colour of the sky in the background against the sillhoutes of the tree branches.
In terms of editing, I didn't have to do much to this image as I already liked the way I had lit the tree on the original image. I experimented using layers to add some other highlights to the tree and surrounding branches but I felt this ruined the image.

Lighting up the Dark - Contact Sheets
For the lighting up the dark brief, I went to Alexandra park in Dennistoun to take photos in some of the forestry.
I used a tripod, plus two different torches to light the trees and experimented with different slow shutter speeds to see what I could get.

Lighting up the Dark - Research
Light painting is a photographic technique where light is “painted” or “drawn” into the photograph using a hand held light source during a long exposure. Painting with light is a popular photographic activity mostly because it is fairly easy to achieve great results, requires little specialist equipment and you can get some really interesting results.
Todd Hido
Todd Hido is a contemporary American photographer whose work has often focused on the dark underside of suburbia showing homes at night. His early series Houses at Night (1997) showcased various farm and suburban homes lit with a single light source, lending a sense of urgency and despair to the otherwise ordinary scenes
Hido’s colour photographs of suburbia are lonely, mysterious… and strangely comforting.

I really like this image for a number of reasons. Firstly, the angle and viewpoint from which Hido has taken then image has created a really nice composition. This is due to the shapes, straight lines and angles from the house roof and picket fence.
Secondly, the colours and tones captured in the image are really soft and calming. The warm light coming from the homes interior compliments the surrounding tones. There is a significant cinematic feel about this image too, It reminds me of an 80s movie.
Tumblr media
The before image had a lot of warm tones whereas this image by Todd Hido is very cold. Initially, this is the feeling which is conveyed but this image, everything feels and looks cold. This is due not only to the snow, but the cold tones emitting from the sky and the pale colour of the home.
The light shining from the windows is also a very cool tones light which adds to this. Hido would've had to capture this image using a slow shutter speed to capture the amount of light we can see in this image as it looks like it was taken during the day but we know its not.
Tumblr media
This is another one of my favourites by Todd Hido. In this image we really can see the textures of the subjects located within the frame. The deep blue colour of the sky really goes well with the brown brick home and complements each other well.
The viewpoint, angle and composition are also really effective in this image as the shape of the homes almost lead your eye to the vehicle. Both points in the home roofs are directly next to the car, creating an almost frame directing you to the car. I think this creates a really balanced image as well as a pleasing composition.

Something Told : Shoot 1 - Contact Sheets
I used a blue tea pot set as the main subject in this still life as I wanted to just practice on composition and shadows and tones that I could achieve with the lighting in my kitchen. The lighting was a struggle as it was an overcast day and the sun would appear every five minutes which led to some of the images being well lit and some being very flat.
