Season One, Episode Ten: Lose The Boss

Daniel wakes up in Betty’s bed with no idea what happened the night before. He has a brief panic about where she slept and Betty teases him that she slept in his arms. 

Betty tells him she brought him to her home because she was worried he’d choke on his own vomit as he lived alone. 

Betty goes to work and leaves Daniel at her house as he’s still not feeling well. Her Dad asks if Daniel takes his coffee on the rocks. Betty asks her Dad to just leave Daniel to sleep but if he gets up before she gets back to offer him breakfast and to be nice. 

Sofia suggests to Betty that she might not want to marry Hunter because she didn’t know Daniel a month ago. 

Daniel gets up and tries to leave but Ignacious hears him and tells him to come and have some coffee. When he puts breakfast down for Daniel, he runs off to be sick. 

Santos recognises Daniel from the paper and mentioned that he dated Angelina when she was between boyfriends, calling him a player, much to Daniel’s upset. 

Betty calls Daniel when she finds out Mode has the exclusive first pictures of baby Chutney but Daniel tells her he’s too sick to come in. Ignacious confirms this to Betty, telling her he can’t hold down any food and has a fever. 

Betty tells Daniel he needs to be there, but he says he can’t because he’s still drunk. 

Daniel orders Betty’s family a Christmas tree after he overhears that Justin is asking for one but Hilda says they can’t afford it as they’re saving money to help Ignacious. 

Ignacious asks if the tree is Betty’s bonus. 

Daniel’s impressed by the amount of home-made decorations the Suarez’s have. Justin asks Daniel if he wants to hang a decoration up and when he doesn’t really know what he’s doing, Hilda asks him if they never had trees growing up. He says they did have amazing trees, but they were never allowed to touch anything. 

When Betty calls Daniel for his input on the photoshoot, he tells her she always wants more responsibility and she’s the man. 

Daniel tells Betty professionals always decorated his family Christmas tree and it was an excuse for a photo shoot. 

Santos gets frustrated with Justin’s decorating of the Christmas tree and wants him to be more of a ‘normal’ kid. Daniel intervenes and says if Justin leaves him, he’ll make a mess of the tree and that Justin has a talent. Hilda and Santos argue before Santos storms out. Daniel tries to distract Justin by asking if he’s doing the decorations right. 

Justin gives Daniel a stocking to hang up on the tree. It’s Betty & Hilda’s Mum’s old stocking and Justin tells Daniel that will be his stocking. 

Daniel apologises to Ignacious saying he didn’t mean to interfere but he tells Daniel he was pleased he was there and he’ll make a great Father one day. 

Betty tells Daniel her idea for the photoshoot which he likes but he decides to do the photoshoot at Betty’s house in front of her tree. 

Betty convinces Sofia to take her to Daniels house on her way to the airport. When Sofia realises she could have got a lift from Christina, Betty told her that she couldn’t be the one to tell Daniel that she might be someone else's wife on Monday and she needed to do that herself. 

Daniel spots Sofia arriving with Betty and watches her through the window. When Ignacious sees her he says now he understands Daniel’s behaviour. 

Daniel gives Sofia a dove he made at the Suarez house. He says they could maybe pick out a tree to hang it on. 

Daniel thanks Betty for what she did while he was at her house, especially bringing Sofia to him. He tells her she’s postponed her trip. 

He also congratulates Betty on the job offer. Betty is flustered and says she didn’t take it seriously and Daniel tells her she didn’t grow up wanting to be his assistant and that he would never hold her back. She hugs him. 

When Hilda comments about how much of a nice guy Tim was, Betty assumes she was talking about Daniel.

Season One, Episode Nine: Four Thanksgivings and a Funeral

Betty is waiting to leave for Thanksgiving but needs to wait for Daniel to go first. She tells a frustrated Hilda over the phone that Daniel is doing ‘paperwork’ but he’s simply balling up paper and throwing it in the bin. 

Even though Amanda broke things off with Daniel, she’s stalking about outside his office, talking loudly about her plans with a new guy, clearly hoping to make Daniel jealous. 

Daniel has been hanging around the office hoping that Sofia would have called or stopped by. 

Daniel calls Betty’s boyfriend Walter ‘Wilbur’ by mistake. 

Daniel doesn’t want to go to his Dad’s executive brunch until Sofia tells him she’ll be going. But, she’ll be bringing along her boyfriend, Hunter. 

When Sofia first stops by and asks if she’s interrupting, Daniel says no and literally shoves Betty out of his office, who he has been complaining to all this time.  

Daniel calls Betty on Thanksgiving with an emergency. She rushes to see what he needs to find out he just wants to know what shirt to wear. 

Betty tells Daniel off for calling her over such a trivial matter when she has her own issues going on. But she also tells him that he’s amazing, smart and handsome and that Sofia shouldn’t be making him doubt all of this. She also advises him to go with the purple shirt (and the amount of purple and pink he wears, I’m surprised he even had to ask!). 

Amanda and Marc get drunk together at Mode and he asks her what her biggest regret was and she says giving up Daniel and that she fell in love with him (Marc says that he did too). 

Daniel feels intimidated by Hunter’s good deeds and sacrifice, as well as his good looks. Sofia asks Hunter to take her dancing and Hunter says he can’t dance. Daniel says he can dance so the three of them go dancing together. 

Daniel calls Betty to teach him how to salsa over the phone. Once he gets the idea and is ready to dance, Hunter and Sofia start dancing together. Daniel says that he thought Hunter couldn't dance and he says that he can’t as he didn’t make it to the Ballroom dancing finals but blew it with his Paso Doble. 

Daniel leaves, upset about the turn of events and Sofia goes after him, confused as she thought they were going to be friends. He kisses her but he says she loves Hunter and she found a ring in his dresser. She tells Daniel she wants to settle down and have babies and that’s what Hunter offers her. 

Daniel gets so drunk at a bar that the bartender calls Betty to come and get him. her number was the one Daniel calls the most. 

Daniel and Betty both have crappy Thanksgivings.

The Season 3 finale of Ugly Betty wasn't kind to Daniel Meade: His new bride, Molly, died of cancer. Eric Mabius, who plays the grieving editor-in-chief of Mode, explains how Daniel is coping with his loss, how he ends up involved in a cult and whether he thinks Daniel and Betty will ultimately be together.

Eric Mabius: Daniel is kind of losing it this season. There's a bunch of funny stuff that happens, but it's sad at the same time. For quite a few episodes, we see him lost and sort of little boy-like. He's grasping at straws, and he's having serious anger issues, which he's trying to get a handle on. Daniel's lost because this was the first mature love of his life. He's completely not over Molly and doesn't know how to process it.

TVGuide.com: So what does he do? Mabius: Things eventually get so bad that he starts going to a support group that winds up being a cult whose leader promises the hope of reuniting with lost loved ones. It gave us a great opportunity to bring in some amazing guest stars, like Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Dylan Baker. You start thinking it's going to be like Fight Club because Jamie-Lynn plays this dark character, but it goes down a completely different track.

TVGuide.com: Things must be tough at Mode with all this going on. Mabius: With Daniel losing control in certain areas of his life, he's trying to grasp harder at others. Matt is pained over the rejection from Betty, and it's very clear there's some jealousy. So Daniel really tries to rush to Betty's aid, and it ends up creating a whole bunch more drama for her in the workplace. That's what brings Daniel to punch out one of his co-workers in a fit of rage in Betty's defense. It's always one step forward and 10 steps back for Daniel.

TVGuide.com: With Daniel and Betty constantly rushing to each other's sides, do you think they will eventually become a couple like they have on versions of the show that have aired in other countries?

Mabius: I never know an answer to that question. People feel attached to the bond between Daniel and Betty because it's complex. Sometimes she's the older sister to the younger brother, or it's the reverse. It's always fluctuating — even though it's some form of Betty saving Daniel's ass. I think having them get married would really speed up the inevitable end. Having Matt there gives Betty her own identity separate of her relationship with Daniel. I think they will eventually come together, but not in a romantic way. It's kind of like Joanie and Chachi. You think you want to them to get together, but after that's achieved, it's like bad chocolate. You're left feeling a bit dissatisfied.

TVGuide.com: How long before Daniel snaps back to reality? Mabius: He'll try to get back on the horse. We just shot some scenes in the Bahamas where he and Marc go to hit on guys and girls together. Marc can't get lucky because apparently there are no gay people in the Bahamas, and Daniel can't get lucky because apparently, he lost his game. They sort of help each other out and it's really funny and sweet.

Season One Episode Eight: After Hours

Daniel is surprised Betty has read Sofia’s books as he believes they are ‘chick-lit’. 

Daniel is unhappy when Sofia and her editors have to use his conference room after their floor is being cleaned after a fire and sprinkler incident on their own floor. 

Daniel is annoyed when Sofia tries to get Betty’s opinion on her article. 

Daniel is convinced that Sofia wants him. 

Sofia makes a comment about Daniel not using Betty’s intelligence when she asks her to read the article for her but he says he has a lot of important jobs for her which, when Betty asks what the jobs are, he asks for his dry cleaning to be picked up and for her to get him a new ‘sliding plastic thingy’ for under his chair. Realising Sofia is correct and that Betty is unhappy with the jobs given to her, Daniel gives her the chance to review a hotel for him to go in Mode.   

When Sofia catches Daniel with a copy of her book he says he is writing an article about women who tease their way to the top. 

Daniel makes a joke about Sofia and the women working with her having a slumber party when he catches them doing a breast check. Sofia quickly tells him they are doing an article on reconstruction. 

Daniel’s orders Indian food for Sofia and her team. Sofia references it mentioned in her book as an aphrodisiac. He apologises about the comments he made before, which Sofia accepts. 

Sofia takes Daniel out for a ride on her bike where they go to a bar and play pool. They play for money and Sofia wins confidently. She throws the game because she says his ego was getting bruised. 

When he asks her why she thinks he’s a sexaholic she says she never said that and that maybe the article is about her. They then start making out. 

When Daniel sees Sofia at work he says he was thinking about her all weekend and she says she was with her boyfriend. 

Daniel tells Betty her article is great and very ‘her’ but he says he can’t use it because it’s not very ‘Mode’.

Daniel Meade- Character Development 7

Season One Episode Seven: Trust, Lust & Must

This isn’t one of Daniel’s finest episodes! However, he does have a fairly decent learning arc from it. 

Daniel & Amanda arrive at the Meade building together. This is after the watch fiasco and as Amanda starts to confess all, Daniel completely tunes her out as he spots a gorgeous woman. 

Daniel suggests he and Amanda take different elevators so the office won’t notice them arriving at the same time. Amanda mentions leaving her panties in his paper shredder one time. This was just a reason for Daniel to take the same elevator as Sofia. 

When Sofia has her drink spilt on her top and changed out of her shirt in the elevator with Daniel he jokes it’s the fastest first date he’s ever had. Sofia is not impressed. 

During the Must Mode meeting, Amanda tries to play footsie with Daniel under the table and he aggressively moves away from her. She’s visibly upset by his actions. This is a continuing storyline from the last episode regarding Daniel’s watch and Amanda’s feelings for him. She’s starting to realise that Daniel doesn’t really see much in her. 

Daniel goes to a meeting for all the editors and meets Sofia again. He mistakes that she’s there to make the drinks. 

When Daniel says to Betty how quickly Sofia had him sussed, she suggests he apologise to her. Daniel decides to send jewellery instead. 

Sofia rejects Daniel’s jewellery gift- especially as one of Sofia’s employees was also gifted with the same necklace from Daniel. 

When Daniel asks Amanda if a necklace would be ‘generic’ as a gift, she tells him no and that she sent him one after their first night together. Daniel starts talking about apologising with jewellery and Amanda thinks it’s about her and the watch. When she realises this is still about Sofia and he doesn’t even know what he should be apologising for she makes her excuses and leaves. 

When Daniel and Sofia get stuck in a lift together, she climbs on his shoulders to escape and tells him not to look up as she isn’t wearing any underwear. He of course looks and they both ending up falling to the floor.  He gets a slap round the face for his troubles. 

Amanda confesses to Daniel she had his watch. She says he never even considered her as she’s just a late-night call to him. 

Amanda tells Daniel he needs to find what he’s looking for but she’s not it.

Daniel & Betty- Friends or Lovers?

First, I have to say that I love how the show ended.

I think it was a great idea to leave Betty single and not needing to be attached to a man to be happy and successful and confident.  But they were smart to make enough moves in Daniel’s story to make it perfectly acceptable for anyone who wants to consider these two a future couple. You don’t have to be grasping at straws to picture them together. 

Having said all that, as someone who is not really a shipper in any fandom, I find myself strangely conflicted about these two and whether I see them together or not. 

Daniel’s character gives me the idea that they could get together.  There are times when we see him appreciate Betty’s kindness and friendship. He often turns to her before anyone else when he needs someone to talk to. He takes her advice to heart, he hates to disappoint her.  She’s his friend and she’s one of the only people in his life who hasn’t let him down. It’s clear in the latter part of S4 that he starts to see her differently. 

Betty makes me think they will stay friends forever.  I think the thing might be that Betty never looks at Daniel that way. Even to the point that when he says about her having a crush on him in season 2 (I think) she says she loves him, but not like that.  I’m not sure she’d ever look at him like that, but maybe it’s because she doesn’t expect him to have feelings for her and if he was to tell her he had feelings for her, she’d open herself up to the possibility.

I can't decide whether these two just are great friends or if they could go further. I think Daniel potentially started to think about Betty as more but she never thought of him like that and whether it's because the narrative never let her think about Daniel as a potential love interest or that she just doesn't see him like that is what I struggle with.

“BETTY TAUGHT HIM HOW TO LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY”. Plan my funeral, Eric Mabius has killed me from feels. He clearly has given plenty of thought to the dynamic of Daniel and Betty’s relationship. It’s beautiful!

TVGuide.com: You used to be dead set against a Betty-Daniel romance. Yet something happens between them here. What changed your mind? Horta: The core relationship of the show has always been Betty and Daniel. Whenever we got away from that, people felt the show suffered. The chemistry they have — whether someone can feel it as romantic chemistry or it's just a strong bond — is just palpable. It drove the show. That question was always there: Will Betty and Daniel end up together?

It was probably a conversation I had with America. It was so obvious; they've been there for each other for the entire course of the series and to end with that possibility — and what I think you end with is a possibility — with anyone but Daniel seemed off. Are they together after that? I don't even want to say. I have my version in my head of what happens after she walks away from him, but I think everyone can have their own interpretation.
