One of the most highly praised Japanese manga series of all time, Devil's Blade has been making its way across the world for the past five years. While it is a visual treat, the story is a lot less interesting than you might expect. It takes place in modern Japan, in the shadow of the corporate giants of Shimano Corporation, and follows the misadventures of high school student Tsubasa "Toryu" Tomori.
As a student on the third year of high school, Tsubasa Tomori is one of the chosen few who were chosen to be part of the Devil's Blade, a suicide squad where those who die before the squad are tortured and killed by the Order of theigladium. Despite her young age, she is a fast learner and is good at combat thanks to her katana. This is only a part of what makes her a formidable fighter, however. She also has magical powers and has an interest in history, mythology, and anything that's out of the ordinary. Her supernatural capabilities seem to be limitless as well, as she can summon sharks from the sea, and control animals and objects. But above all, what makes her so interesting is that she is so normal looking, yet is capable of doing supernatural things.
In Devil's Blade, Tomori suddenly becomes very sick and weak and finds out that she is the spitting image of a famous historical figure. She was born in present day Japan, and is obsessed with preserving the Japanese tradition of Shinto. She wants to avenge the death of her brother, Gomi, whom she considers as a family member. But when one night, she meets a man with a name she doesn't recognize, the man takes her in as his own daughter. Everything in that beginning is what would become the plot line of the series. The series follows a normal girl who finds herself suddenly transformed into a blade-wielding killing machine. She is fascinated by the whole notion of death and revenge, and fights to protect the honor of the Japanese people, and to protect the Japanese way of life. While this seems like the main idea of the story, the series has other interesting characters. For one thing, Tomori's brother Gomi is very badly injured during the series, and he refuses to leave the hospital. He believes that his death would be better than letting Tomori win the battle for Japan.
Another interesting character is Kyouko Yuasa, a Shinigami who works for a firm that specializes in spiritual investigations. Because she is so attached to the subject of death, she tends to over analyze things. Another interesting character is Tomiki Asahara, a Shinigami who also has psychic powers, and is also a practitioner of Shinto. Because both of them have the same hobbies (shunt and Shinigami), they team up and become rivals.
While I think the series is pretty good, I do have one minor complain. There were a few aspects of the story that felt a little generic. Other than that, this is a fun and entertaining read with great character development and plot twists. If you have not read the series, I recommend giving it a try!
