Further Excerpts From The Fire Nation Royal Palace Servants' (Unofficial) Handbook
Or: More Revisions To Normal Protocol After The Ascension Of Agni's Exalted Flame, The Dragon Of The Sun, et cetera, Fire Lord Zuko
Part 1:
7. If His Majesty offers you advice regarding martial arts, camouflage, theatre, or any other subject which he is commonly known to be well-versed in, accept it gratefully. If His Majesty offers you advice on emotional matters, listen politely and then disregard it.
7.1. If His Majesty uses the phrase "silver sandwich", you are entitled to a longer lunch break. So you can take a longer bite out of your silver sandwich.
7.1.1. Please do not vandalize the handbook, even if you think it's funny.
7.1.2. Especially if you think it's funny, Chikao.
7.2. If you share something tragic with His Majesty, and he replies "that's rough, buddy", it means he empathizes with your situation.
7.2.1 Alright, maybe he did need to learn that it's not a great way to respond to tragedy. But "rough like the boulders that crushed my father?" was a bit much.
8. Prince Iroh has advised the servants not to reveal to His Majesty what the meat in turtleduck dumplings is. Apparently, he thinks the name comes from their shape. The dumplings are not shaped like turtleducks.
8.1. Now that His Majesty knows, be ready to recite the names of all the turtleducks in the palace at a moment's notice, and also to reassure His Majesty that they are all safe, accounted for, and uneaten.
9. His Majesty should be kept apprised of any "sightings" of the Blue Spirit. The Blue Spirit is an entirely fictional creature. However, his belief in it is entirely benign (and as far as eccentricities go, we've all seen worse) and likely something he will outgrow with age.
9.1. Do not lie about any "sightings". If His Majesty is told that the Blue Spirit was sighted near his window, he will be extremely distraught for the entire day. The Fire Lord has too many real assassins to worry about already. There is no need to add imaginary ones to the mix.
9.1.1. And whenever he is distraught, his footsteps are even quieter than they normally are. It is hard enough to keep track of his movements as it is.
10. While His Majesty has approved the "Kick Ozai Retreat" for servants who were mistreated by Ozai of the Fire Nation (titles rmvd, dishon.), it will never be organized. Please suggest other activities for the Servant Wellness Day.
10.1. Yes, that is because Avatar Aang found out.
10.1.1. Specifically because of the very heartfelt and very long speech he gave on the matter. And the fear that he might give one again.
10.1.2. And no, we can not "simply tell the Avatar to shut up." He is the Avatar. And he is also a 13-year-old boy. His dragonling eyes are very effective.
11. Princess Azula is at the stage of her treatment where she will take regular trips to the palace, dividing her time between her island and here. We're all terrified, but there's nothing we can do.
11.1. Lady Beifong has offered to act as protection, should the need arise. On an unrelated note, the kitchens will now be serving a number of delicacies from the State of Gaoling.
11.2. At the specific and undeniable request of Master Toph, The Blind Bandit, her titles and styles have been updated and they will be enforced effective immediately.
12. If Avatar Aang is seen on a rooftop with no apparent purpose, that means that Fire Lord Zuko is also on that rooftop. Get him down.
12.1. If Master Katara appears to be discreetly looking for someone, that usually means that one or all of His Majesty, Avatar Aang, Master Toph, the Honorable Tribesman Sokka, or the lemur Momo are in some kind of trouble. Assist her. Before one of those idiots gets themselves killed.
12.2. Do not vandalize the handbook, even if it's true. Also, please do not call our Fire Lord, the Avatar, Master Toph, or the Avatar's beloved pet an idiot.
13. Any senior officials who wish to challenge Fire Lord Zuko to an Agni Kai should be directed to the Fourth Scribe's office. They should also be told that there is a waitlist.
13.1. If the Honorable Tribesman Sokka wishes to challenge the Fire Lord to an Agni Kai again, he should be denied. No matter what he tells you, he has not developed Firebending abilities by means of "Spirit World shenanigans" or by Avatar Aang "just giving them to him, Energybending style, like best buddies do, you know."
13.1.1. The Matron has made it known that if the Honorable Tribesman Sokka offers to demonstrate his so-called "Firebending abilities" again, servants are allowed one free kick. The last time he did it, the stench from his blubber bombs lingered for three weeks.

Hot take!
The Netflix adaptation of Avatar the Last Airbender was good actually!!!!
It’s not a one to one replica. It’s its own thing. It hits all the important story beats and (in my opinion) improves on many of the characters characterizations.
It’s ok to love both the original and the adaptations. I recommend anyone basing their decision of this show solely on the super-fans of the internet to do yourself a favor and give it a shot anyway.
It’s very clear to me that a lot of people gave it their all in making this show. The actors and actresses knocked it out of that park. The writing was decent and cohesive, and I’d be remiss to not give the effects team their due.
Please stop tearing these wonderful works down without first giving them a chance.

1. Sokka’s sexism has been toned down and changed, not entirely removed. Pakku is still exactly the same. Sokka is actually wearing the KW armor in the trailers BTW, and I understand the change because in the OG, Sokka wearing the uniform wasn't a progressive guys can wear dresses thing. It was a joke, Aang also wearing it was a joke. It was not in good taste and they modified it to be more respectful.
2. The trailer literally has Aang having a tough time accepting his position as Avatar and they have said multiple times Aang’s childishness and fun-loving side is still in there.
3. The Ba Sing Se thing was a literal joke and they're playing the bit and you guys fell for it. EDIT: The Ba Sing Se thing isnt even real! A twitter account parodying DiscussingFilm posted it as a joke.
4. It is an adaptation so they do have to shuffle things around and redo things.
5. When they said it's like "Game of Thrones" they did not mean its not for kids anymore. It was to give a little more weight to what's happening and expand the demographic from just kids to something everyone can enjoy. An all-ages show instead of a strictly kids show. I'd say ATLA already is that but they had to censor deaths to make it appropriate for very young kids. Albert Kim straight up says he put more details on the genocide in there because the original viewers, who were children and the cast like Gordon and Kiawentiio were able to see that and understand the implications in the OG so he thought okay we could show it more.
Also like, you do understand that a good reason why we ONLY see the remains of the air temples is not because of a deliberate choice but also because of censorship, right? They worked with to make it poignant and intentional rather than restrictive, but the censorship played a huge role.
6. They removed Sozin's comet to accommodate for the inevitably longer time frame over which the live action will take place in. All of them are growing older and there was no guarantee for s2. So unfortunately the series's timeline has to increase too. Sozin's commet happens in like 3-4 months on the OG. They COULD have put it in to give the kids direction and a deadline but that deadline would be like, maybe even 3-4 years from now. Like I get it, and I won't pass judgement on if it's a good or bad decision until I see the show.
6. Bryke were there for the first movie. We all know how THAT turned out.
You don't need to watch the show, you may continue to ignore its existence and even hate it but it irritates me to see people entirely misunderstand and make conclusions without knowing what is actually happening.

Changes in NATLA that I'm excited for:
Adapting Sokka's sexism for live-action by toning it down
Giving more time for Katara to master waterbending by allowing a greater gap between Book 1 and 2
Really driving in the seriousness of the war-- seeing the Air Nomad genocide, the Fire Nation's occupation of the Earth Kingdom, etc.
Making Aang's mastering of the elements more realistic with the timeline of the series being longer
Emphasizing how the departure of their parents influence Sokka and Katara
More interactions with Aang's past lives
Azula has more screentime so we can really see how Ozai's parenting affected Zuko and Azula differently
More humanity for key villains: Zhao, possibly Azula
A closer look into Ozai's drive to take over the world, painting him as a greater and more tangible threat
Sokka and Suki bonding over being nonbenders
Letting the story breathe since it's not contained to quick twenty-minute episodes now
If anyone wants to hear my thoughts on any of these, I'd be happy to elaborate!

People complaining that Netflix’ ruined Sokka because they removed sexist comments and aptitudes from the character, is that all you remember about him? That he was “oh girls are weak” and later he was “girls are strong”? And that for some reason he can’t have any type of growth anymore because he isn’t sexist at the start of the story?
Sokka is a kid that was left in charge of protecting an entire tribe, he had to hide his grief for the sake of his people.  The character is shown as sarcastic, charming, and confident; but behind all of that there is an insecure kid that wants his whole family again. He is a kid that supported his sister’s journey in becoming a master, that stood beside the avatar while he tried to figure out how to end a war, that accepted his former enemy into his team because he knew they needed him if they wanted to succeed.
Through all that journey, he also learned about himself. About being a better leader, a better fighter, an incredible smart strategist and inventor. He learned that the confidence his father put into him wasn’t misplaced, because he is actually an incredible capable kid. That was his growth!
And yes, he also learned that girls are formidable warriors and talented masters. But that is something he can learn without the need of sexist comments in the show.

'I know you can do this, Nuri. Try again.'
I do not talk about these two enough, but they are so important to me. Their relationship as Master and Padawan took a long time to flourish, what with Mai's emotionless facade and Nuri's lack of control of her powers, but eventually, they came to respect and love each other deeply. Nuri would have done anything for Mai and vice versa.
Their bond was powerful, surpassing the typical Master-Padawan connection and leaning more towards a mother-daughter bond. When Mai sacrificed her life for Nuri, the broken bond left Nuri lost and angry, untethered from one of the only people who truly knew her.
