In the summer of 2018 I traveled to Japan. On this trip, I discovered the wonders of the many "recycling shops" dotting the busy streets. These stores contain a number of exciting, almost random items that no longer have a loving home. A popular chain of these shops uses the "OFF" moniker, as in BOOKOFF. On that fateful summer day, I slid a pink record sleeve out of a neatly packed shelf of vinyl records. Looking down at my prize, I was presented with a Native American glancing at the bicycle parked on the shore. The OBI strip simply ready: The Beach Boys Smile" Now, as a long time fan... I found myself immediately taken aback. What was this mysterious record? Where did it come from? I didn't even have a turntable handy until I very careful brought this music back to the place it had been recorded. When the needle hit the disc, I discovered something utterly shocking. A seemingly complete, clean, stereo mix of the Beach Boys' unreleased opus. ... Or not! That's just a story! But after all, in some universe that must be true.

“There's no place in the world like the Mercury Café!” boldly states an employee during our interview. It's probably true. The creation of its founder Marilyn Megenity, the Mercury Café in Denver, CO is a dream of a spot, where many would hang out every week if they lived anywhere nearby (we certainly would). Born-and-bred in Denver, Marilyn started working early on in restaurants and figured out pretty quickly that if it were up to her, she'd do it differently. She started dreaming up a cafe that would offer delicious, organic food, be fair to its employees, and serve as a fun, welcoming gathering place - a space that builds community. In 1990, Marilyn’s dream became a reality as she opened the Mercury Café, now a landmark in the Five-Points district of Denver that not only serves great food but gives music, art and important conversation a place to blossom.

Following the tragic events of the Ghost Ship fire I realized it was time to share my work and rally for these spaces and the humble people organizing the events. Many of the spaces and events documented were run by women and or non binary people. Many of these artists and spaces were temporary solutions to the ongoing struggle of the creative class making the book all the more important as a document as proof of the community. This book is currently for sale in many zine stores through out America and Berlin. Many of the images from this book are secured within arts and music archives.
