                     { 欺く --- 利便性 }
He had s l i p p e d.
A glance had been enough to doom him.    Years of experience, a mind set on achieving    one thing;    not getting caught.
The guild in question had committed crimes, earned    punishment exceeding that of the culprit his position    within the Council served to get him closer to, and    he had let those evil-doers capture him.
They dubbed him a rat, ‘council scum’ as he had    been dragged into the shady alleyway in town. Not    a first, not a last, but never a pleasant situation.
Kicks would be dealt, punches in between, and he’d    only now and then feel his grin slipping. There was    nothing amusing about the circumstances, but he    somehow could not help but feel light-hearted.
The kicking came to a sudden halt, allowing the young    wizard to take a breath. He did so through a light grunt,    the pit of his stomach itself aching intensely enough to    send a shiver down his spine. Without glancing back up,    he gave a husky chuckle.
Was there already a drop of blood on his lips?
“Why, I thought this ought to teach me a            lesson! I can’t say you seem to be doing            that good a job so far.”

Sometimes, a lack of emotional response told more truth than    a reaction driven by strong emotions. Alas, he seemed to fail    at reading her all that clearly; perhaps she was, after all,     suspicious of his presence. No matter; he was accustomed to    it anyhow.
Truly, she was of little occupational value to the councillor;    the Council showed no interest in those not involved with    world-shattering scandals.
She obviously put effort into keeping a blank face, which often    hinted that the person in question held a secret. As much as    Japer enjoyed digging for those dark little truths hidden away,    manners were not entirely lost on him, and it was hardly necessary    to pry when there was no original need to find out anything about    her. A smile remained on his face, careless and honest.
“No, no! I’m not well-known, otherwise I’d be an awful           undercover agent.”
He waved his hand a little, giving a soft chuckle. It intrigued     him, however, that her answer was exactly what he had    expected. His smile formed into a devious smirk, an eyebrow    raised in question.
“Hmm, so you reckon.             I wonder why you seem so very different from them.”
Tumblr media
There was no clear response on her face to the sudden news that she was speaking with a counselor, though, it made a lot of sense considering he knew so much, things she was rather sure she had not shared in interviews. Interviews that were small and barely noticed.
In the scheme of mage celebrity she really was a no one. Just another pretty face in a guild filled with attractive people.
However, things ticked over in her head fast. Was this really a chance meeting, or was there something more to it? Was he here because of a certain someone else? Either way these thoughts did not show on her face, more than a small twitch of her eyebrow.
Normally, Avis wasn’t exactly good at covering things, lies, things she knew, but when it came to matters of the heart, she was a master at hiding it all. Something that perhaps was shared with all Ice Mages… the way it was quite easy to encase oneself from the outside.
“A-Ah. Now I feel a little rude for not knowing who you were—” She uttered, there was no pause, no matter how those thoughts had rushed in her head. “—and well, I guess most of them want to cling to some kind of icy personality? Theres no fun in that!”

         “You’re a fun one, aren’t you?”
He had met a sufficient amount of serious, stuck-up officials    and wizards in his time, and much preferred sincere jests to    productive, straight-forward and objective answers. Then    again, he knew enough about Freed Justine to presume that    a jolly road would not be one easily tread upon by the two.    Being entirely serious did not quite strike his fancy either,    however.
“Park. Cathedral.             Silly me, I should have hired a guide of            some kind if I hoped for light-hearted            company. You see, councillors don’t do            well where wizards are celebrated,            off or during duty.”
The Raijinshuu’s Captain could not help but slowly arch up a brow as he listened to the male’s first listing. It turned out to be merely a joke quickly after though, apparently with the aim to lighten Freed up, though the rune mage did keep a straight face and still rather concentrated on being responsive to the other’s query in a serious manner.
                             “Mhm.
Well yes, the park perhaps however I suppose that some might tell you that a visit to Magnolia’s cathedral could be interesting as well.”

                        { 欺く —- 混沌 }
Perhaps he would have fit better into one of the many magic    guilds adorning the country’s landscape. The Council had its    bonds, and if he had been a mere spark more like Kain when    growing up, the two of them would have gone the same way,    wanted in secret, unknown yet infamous criminals, ruining the    days of many councillors over and over again. Alas, he had    grown to develop a strong sense of justice, and the misdeeds     of his older brother were just that; misdeeds. He did not hold    him dearly anymore, all he had meant to achieve with joining    the Council was to find and arrest his brother.
Over time, the jobs he was given pushed away his original    motivation, even though his goal never quite left his thoughts.    Infiltrating and interrogating with his magic as his only weapon    had grown to equal fun to the young wizard, and doing so    within the bonds of good and righteous would, during further    thinking, seem like a dreamy circumstance.
That was why he never complained about any tasks given to    him as long as they required a certain level of action on his    part. As long as he would have to actively intervene or create,    he would take on anything and everything the Council threw    his way. Specifically the case of Eva Marigold, however, had    intrigued him slightly. Someone as stealthy as he liked to think    himself would surely make a challenge to track down and get     a hold of. In any case, his objective was not to capture her but    the object in question.
Might as well take the chance to chat a little and have some fun.
Tumblr media
“You would do well not to underestimate strangers.            You may have your guard up, but the unexpected            strikes all those doubting it.            Oh, I know! This would be terribly awkward otherwise!”
Another bright smile was given, almost as though he was proud    of having caught on to the right person. Things were almost going    better than he had expected; there was no reason to wear a frown     at such comfortable circumstances. If it were up to him, the entire    matter of stealing the artefact as soon as it was retrieved would    be lifted right away, but that wasn’t what the rules dictated.
“I can relate, though I may lack some of your years.            Ah, how rude of me!            They call me Japer, but you may just as well address            me as Azrael. But hush, that name is not unheard of.”
chaotic | Eva & Japer
Eva was a specialist for unusual situations.
Years ago, she had arrived in Lamia Scale’s town and she had been nothing but an angry little girl, wanting to prove the world that just because she had not been raised by monks or had a tragic past, she was still every fibre the mage all the others had been. Lamia Scale’s master had taken one look at her, laughed to herself and muttered something about how they would see if Eva was really made out of the stuff mages were made of and told her to get her guild mark after she had found a place to stay. At twelve, Eva had been even more stubborn and allergic to everything that looked like authority and so she had flat out asked if the old hag was trying to get rid of her.
(Apparently, it had been part of some kind of test and Eva had passed it.)
What had followed had been no wonderful friendship where she and the master got together twice a week to drink tea together and gossip about the other mages but a relationship between equals for Ooba could accept someone who came with a plan and did not like to lose.
Years had passed and she had gained the trust of her master and she had been honest with the old woman when she had been torn between duty and loyalty. She had not wanted to leave her guild, she had not wanted to give up the part of herself that had only ever belonged to herself, but duty had called and for once, she had listened and she had gone to do what was expected of her: hunting the thieves who had stolen magical artefacts, cursed them and sold them to civilians who could not deal with such curses.
More than ten years after the artefacts had been first stolen, Eva considered herself an expert at curse breaking, reading magical runes and dealing with criminals. Really, if she had known that her life would turn out like this, she would have joined the magical council because technically speaking, they should be the ones doing this while she handled normal guild jobs. But as she had been informed, most of the people who had originally owned the artefacts dud not like to talk to the council as they were non-magical people and had never felt represented by them in the first place.
Tumblr media
»I wouldn’t have guessed that you were an expert on                     shoes, good man … the name’s Marigold, Eva Marigold                     … quite nice to meet someone with a sense of humour                     around here.«
As it seemed, she had been caught already but for once, it did not keep her from grinning ever so slightly. If he had been one of the people she was chasing, he would have tried something the moment he had realised that she was not whom she had pretended to be. Strategies that involved to make the target feel safe and secure were beyond what her opponents favoured.
»You learn being careful if you’re on the road for                     years. Now, since this doesn’t seem to be a coincidence                     … tell me who you are, will you?«

“--black markets. Illegal organisations. Violent           groups’ headquarters. The usual tourist attractions.”
For the blink of an eye, the Councillor seemed entirely serious    about the statements made, though it didn’t take him long to    give a jolly chuckle. His position usually had others treading    carefully, and they reserved every right to do so. Alas, that did    not forbid him to try and ease the mood.            “Excuse me!             They do call me Japer for a reason.            The market, or park may be interesting.”
Tumblr media
“I would like to claim that your notion of 'interesting sights' depends on your personal interests.”
Or on Magonlia’s history, he added soundlessly. This reply came a little faster out of his mouth than his previous words and in his mind was now more the wonder why he was being approached with this sort of query, and why his humble self was the one being approached with it. After all, this was a question many people would be able to answer properly.
