One of my favorite things about rewatching Cowboy Bebop is seeing all these one-line characters that you instantly know everything about from how they decorate their tiny box in space.

People against piracy fail to realize that no, I can’t just ‘buy it.’ They stopped making DVDs and Blu-Rays. They’re barely offering digital copies for download. I am not spending money I could use for food or bills to pay for a subscription service just so I can always have access to a beloved piece of media. Especially not when the service will remove media on a whim without concern for how the loss of access to that piece will make its artistic conservation nigh impossible.

For example, I recently learned that Disney+ had an original film called Crater. It’s scifi, family friendly, and seems cool - I would love to buy it as a holiday gift for my little brother! But: it’s exclusive to D+ and THEY REMOVED IT LITERALLY MONTHS AFTER ITS RELEASE.

The ONLY way I can directly access this film is through piracy. The ONLY available ‘copies’ of this film are hosted on piracy websites. Disney will NEVER release it in theaters, or as something to buy, and it may NEVER return to the streaming service. It will be LOST because we aren’t allowed to purchase it for personal viewing. If I can’t pay to own it, I won’t pay for the privilege of losing it when corporate decides to put it in a vault.

So yes, I’m going to pirate and support piracy.

btw one of the key components of actually being in a healthy relationship is just asking for things that you want. i keep seeing posts on this website saying 'i really want to do/receive [X] but my partner has never done it'. just ask. 'nobody exchanges love letters anymore' ask. 'i want to have my partner's hair in a locket like the victorians' just ask. 'i want to be bought flowers regularly :((' literally just ask. your partner doesn't know they're being held to these expectations and that you're unhappy unless you tell them. it's so unfair to expect your partner to read your mind. 'it's less special if you have to ask :((' grow up and stop pretending you're the lead in a romcom. when people say communication is crucial they mean it !! just ask !!

As much as we Americans give guff (and rightfully so) to Europeans for being so weird about nature, let's not forget that Americans are super not immune to it either.

Americans insist constantly that coyotes are going to attack children (your child is exponentially more likely to be seriously injured by their own dog) or that coyotes lure dogs to their deaths by leading them into the waiting pack (your stupid idiot dog with no recall chased a pack of coyotes that fought back and suddenly the coyotes are at fault here?)

But the one that drove me insane the most was the guy who shot the first opossum to be documented this far north in hundreds of years because he was afraid that a 3 pound opossum was going to kill his dog.

It's barely bigger than a guinea pig I promise you it's not going to eat your fucking husky you brain dead idiot loser. Stop being such a mindless coward.

thinking again of pink fairy armadillo, and tangential to that, one of the most awful things about social media is how you can find a video of virtually any animal living in a house as a pet, and for any given animal, a large number of the videos of that animal available on the internet show the animal indoors or in some kind of captivity situation and you as the viewer must really think about it for a moment to wonder about how the animal got there and if it is ethical to be keeping it

I know that cis men are capable of being great people which is why it’s so frustrating when they suck. Your gender isn’t inherently bad at doing the dishes. You’re just a thoroughly unpleasant person.

Who wants the rant about “broken windows”?

There’s a thing called “broken windows policing” which is the cops cracking down on minor crimes and generally shaking down a neighborhood. The point of it is to prevent bigger crimes etc.

It is actually a horrible misunderstanding of what’s actually happening and incredibly counterproductive.

“Broken windows” theory has to do with criminals feeling bolder in areas that don’t look cared for. The ACTUAL problem is that predators look for easy prey, and criminals look for easy targets. Broken windows are a symptom of an area with absentee landlords, and an area with no one looking out for the residents. The people who live there are probably too busy or wrapped up in merely surviving to care of somebody is stealing a bike, or breaking into someplace. It’s a poverty of money, time, and also attention.

Adding cops to stop and frisk isn’t helping anyone. That isn’t what the neighborhood NEEDS.

It needs the goddamn windows fixed. It needs people who live there to have enough time and attention to help their neighbors. It needs the buildings to be locally owned with people living there who are keeping up the maintenance!

Predators look for easy prey and thieves want an easy job. A neighbor watching from their porch means fewer porch pirates. Parents and aunties looking out their kitchen windows at the kid’s playground mean the parents and older siblings there have backup if something happens. Neighborhoods that look cared for and have more residents around with time and attention to spare are safer.

THIS is what the broken windows theory is actually about. It’s not cops. It’s networks of neighbors caring for each other. It happens more easily when people have resources and time, so poverty makes an area vulnerable.

But, middle class suburban areas can be vulnerable too. If there’s no one home, if people don’t know each other, if they spend all their time on the freeway commuting or at work or elsewhere, then the area becomes an easy target. Which is why all the houses have Ring doorbells and video cameras.

The way to make a neighborhood safer is to build connections, care for one another, and lift each other up. The broken windows are a symptom of a larger care gap. The care and connections are what is missing and adding care and connections will make the area more resilient and safer over time.
