As much as I love the Margiela stitches, I adore the A.F. Vandevorst crosses.

I feel like they are more ‘in the know’ than Margiela because they haven’t been featured as much in fashion history lessons or documentaries. Which is a huge shame because many of their runways were perfomances.

As I, and perhaps you too, have not been to their fashion shows it is hard to see how innovative their materials are. Only because I had the privilige to shop their archives, I’ve come in contact with cardboard harnesses, garments painted by beachsand, chalk pinstriped pieces with small chest holders to keep extra chalk pieces in.

Next to these almost-couture pieces they have ready-to-wear, such as this shirt. As with Vandevorst, there is always that back panel, straight or a slanted overlap, each version gives that structured feel. A high collar, extra long cuffs and silver buttons create a military look. One of their main inspirations.

Now online and sadly the skirt has been sold.
