if there’s one thing about dirk gently’s holistic detective agency that disappoints me, i think it’s the fact that they never did that scene from the book where dirk dresses up in drag to go make money reading tarot cards, then tries his absolute hardest to get the prediction wrong (because he’s not psychic) but instead gets scarily accurate and specific results every time.

Can we talk more about Dirk's unhealthy coping mechanisms?

I have many thoughts about the fractured psychic nerd and his maladaptive coping strategies. Other than the fun bastard hybrid of mental health issues that he’s been fighting for over two decades, may I propose the following:

Dirk’s lips were bitten to shreds even before he voluntarily entered Blackwing as a child, and discovering that he was special rather than just broken just increased his anxiety rather than decreasing it as expected. Riggins never delivered on his promise to help him understand what his purpose was and the pressure was almost too intense to bear.

Years of painful experimentation and failure led to him developing a range of behaviours associated with learned helplessness e.g. difficulty solving problems using logic, failure to develop healthy dietary or exercise habits, passiveness in the face of immediate danger.

This came with a side helping of Stockholm Syndrome. Dirk was so terrified of Priest that just hearing his voice turned him catatonic, but he still felt confident enough to snap back at Riggins when he appeared at the Ridgely (he was terrified and teary-eyed but he never lost his voice). You’ll never convince me that Riggins didn’t act like a kindly uncle in the hopes of endearing himself to a lonely, scared child with no other support network, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Dirk still harboured some residual affection for the man even after he comes to terms with how unhealthy and toxic the relationship was.

He kept a lot of the terrible habits that Blackwing enforced. The loud WRONG alarm blares in his head whenever he’s thrust into a new and dangerous situation. He still sleeps on top of the covers, stiff as a ruler, fully dressed because there’s nothing worse than being rudely awakened for another test and having to drag your jumpsuit on while being watched by unsympathetic cold-eyed guards.

Dirk developed a severe pack-a-day smoking habit after the first breakout, when the universe started throwing him in the path of some pretty shady people in some dimly-lit bars. They were easily accessible and much less expensive than other drugs that people were pushing (he doesn’t need pills to help him connect to the universe, he thinks to himself). His nicotine addiction continued during his brief, ill-fated stint at Cambridge where it actually helped him blend in with other eccentric philosophy students down at the local tavern, but he’d been clean for a few years by the time the Patrick Spring case swung around.

He’s guilty of self-sabotage for a range of reasons, most of which can be summed up as at least when you’re steering the ship, going down in flames feels more like a well-maintained burn. To Dirk, failure feels consistent with everything else he’s ever experienced. He’s trying to choose his own moves even though he knows he’s embroiled in a game he never signed up for, playing by rules he doesn’t understand, with the knowledge that his fellow players will suffer if he makes a single mistake.

I think he developed a lot of coping mechanisms as a child that he’s never going to properly unlearn, because they’re so deeply engrained at this point that they’re just an intrinsic part of his personality. But his breakdown in Wendimoor and subsequent voluntary return to Blackwing probably helped him realize the permanency of his hard-won strength, not least because he’s now been blessed with a caring and impartial support network.
