So I’ve talked about this before, but something that is very common amongst divergent groups of Black people in the United States, i.e., biracials, alternative Black people, or wealthy Black people, is the claim that more standard subsets of Black people have rejected their identity as Black people, citing teasing or jokes at their expense in adolescence to substantiate these claims.
I learned a long time ago that what was actually happening was that divergent groups of Black people were assuming their insecurities surrounding their place within blackness in America was something that other Black people also felt and believed to be true. it’s the belief that other Black people do not view you as black enough before they even tell you as much. And that belief means that when Black people tease you about the thing that makes you feel like an outsider, you believe it to be a malicious confirmation of your pre established insecurities rather than what it’s intended to be.
You see, roasting each other for literally everything is a cultural standard amongst African-Americans. The disconnect arises when standard African-Americans tease someone as a member of the ingroup, and then that person receives it as a member of the outgroup. They view it as further confirmation that they are in fact outside of the group because they had pre-established insecurities that the rest of the population was simply not aware of.
So when a standard black person teases you for being “an Oreo” the assumption on the part of that black person is that you will not internalize that because obviously you’re a black person and it’s a joke from one black person to another. But when you take a person who is already insecure in their own blackness, they don’t view it as a joke but rather admonishment of their personhood And confirmation that they are not welcome in a space that everyone else already assumes they feel secure in.
After watching an African woman’s video today, I now know that this exact same thing happens to Africans when they come to America. A misunderstanding of our culture as well as an insecurity in their place as members of the in group amongst African-Americans due to differing identity markers across the diaspora leads to the same exact problems that we see with divergent black groups in African Americans.
"unalive" should just mean the opposite of undead. if undead means a dead thing thats alive, unalive shuld mean an alive things thats dead. no i dont have any examples. ☝️yet
Y’all I can’t believe the “whistleblower assassination” and “literally falling apart in the sky” company is being represented by a man named Rich White
You could not call a character this in a movie because everyone would say “that’s not realistic” and yet!
