1.  WRITING, THINKING AND LOOKING CRITICALLY
Pollock moved to New York City in 1930 at age 18 to study with Thomas Hart Benton at the Arts Students League.  Pollock, who lacked the technical skills of “traditional” painting, later considered Benton’s style of Representational painting “old fashioned” and wanted to separate himself from this style of art.  Pollock considered Abstract art as a more modern style of art.  Peggy Guggenheim in 1943 commissioned Pollock to produce the modernist piece Mural.  In 1947 Pollock began “drip painting”, a style of painting for which he only produced for three years. Life Magazine ran an article with the headline: “Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?”  This article catapulted his status in the art world.

My chosen artwork is Time Discovering the Love of Venus and Mars, by Simon Vouet.  The painting’s dimensions are 57 1/2 x 42 1/2 in. and is made of oil paint on canvas.  The painting has washed colors of green, blue and red.  The subjects of the painting are Chronos, the god of time, Venus, the goddess of love, Mars, the god of war and Cupid, the god of desire. The painting exhibits proportion amongst the subjects.
The artwork is from the Baroque period and was created in Paris by Vouet c. 1640. The story of the painting involves marital infidelity and the exposure of the lover’s affair.  The goddess Venus was married to the god Vulcan, and was having an affair with Mars. Baby Cupid was the result of their affair, which was exposed by Chronos. When viewing, you can sense that Venus and Mars do appear to be deeply in love, as they gaze into each other’s eyes and as Venus strokes Mars’ face. Chronos is hovering over baby Cupid draping him with a metal net created by the god Vulcan.
The artwork is considered to be a painting that was created to be a mantlepiece and was considered to be perfectly suited for the Paris clientele at the time of the painting’s creation. The painting is considered to be well known, as an early copy of it exists. The artwork was originally rectangular and was made oval by painting over the angles in the canvas in black. John Ringling acquired the painting in London c. 1926-1930.
The artwork made me feel curious upon first viewing, as I was unsure what the subjects were portraying in the painting.  Vouet’s purpose was to create an allegory of the subjects when painting this artwork for the viewer.
Based on my research of this artwork, I don’t consider the painting to be of great importance to the art world.  The artwork intrigued me upon first viewing it because of the story depicted in the painting and the gestures of the subjects; this is why I chose this painting to do my paper.

1.      JOURNALING
Unity and Variety means to display objects in an artwork in a harmonious and diverse fashion.
The rows of birds offer Unity and the different colors of the birds offer Variety in the artwork below.
Tumblr media
Balance exhibits evenness in an artwork.
This artwork utilizes asymmetrical Balance by placing the same object disproportional to one another.
Tumblr media
Emphasis draws attention to an object or area, while Subordination is submissive to the object or space that is emphasized.
The amber tree in this artwork acts as the Emphasis portion and the black and white background is the Subordinate portion.
Tumblr media

The Directional Force of the line movement in the sky is to the right. The upward motion of the tree is another Direction Force.
Tumblr media

The artwork below utilizes Contrast through the use of black and white colors.

2.      WRITING AND LOOKING
Claude Monet, Impression: Sunrise.  Page 378.  Figure 21.21.
This artwork uses contrast (sun), focal points (boats and sun), limited color variation and fluid design.
3.      CONNECTING ART TO YOUR WORLD
The blue color intensity of the Gulf of Mexico water in the in Cozumel, Mexico was an enjoyable experience when on vacation with my family.  I enjoy the colors of green and blue; they are tranquil and calming.  Deep hues of blue and green are most appealing to me.

5. PHOTO/DESIGN
This is a good layout design example.  It's very easy to understand and provides a clear uncluttered message.
Tumblr media
This is an example of a very poor layout design, that has you wondering what are they trying to advertise.  The layout and message is quite confusing.  A layout design shouldn’t have you doubtful what the intent of the message is.

VIRTUAL SKETCHBOOK 1
1.  WRITING AND RESEARCH:
Tumblr media
Diane Arbus,1962, Child with Toy Hand Grenade.
Facts on the Artwork:
The picture was taken in Central Park, NYC in 1962.
The name of the boy in the photograph is Colin Wood, son of professional tennis player Sidney Wood.
Colin later stated that he didn’t recall being photographed but said that he sensed a feeling of being lonely and abandoned during this time period, as his parents had divorced around that time.
Colin said in a statement of the photograph, that he believed that Diane Arbus had similar feelings of loneliness and abandonment and that is why she took the photographs of him.
Colin was interviewed about his recollections of the photograph in the BBC documentary, The Genius of Photography, where he discusses his thoughts of the photograph.
My first impressions on this artwork changed after doing some research on this piece. At first, I saw a skinny kid with what I thought was a real hand grenade. I later learned that the grenade was a toy and that the boy was using the grenade, along with his facial and body-language expressions, to express his feelings of frustration, loneliness and abandonment.

2. ART AND WRITING:
This artwork was done by my former supervisor, Elizabeth Meneely. She produced this piece while battling cancer; a battle she ultimately lost. I keep this piece on my wall at home as a remembrance to her. She gave me an opportunity to work for an amazing organization back in 2007; an organization for which I still work for and will likely will work for until I retire.
I enjoy the vivid colors of this abstract artwork. The media used to produce this piece appears to be watercolor paint.
