Turkey: Ministry To Investigate Minecraft 'violence'
Turkey Minister to investigate Minecraft 'violence' News from Elsewhere... ... media reports from around the globe discovered by BBC Monitoring
9 February 2015
According to reports, the government of Turkey is investigating allegations that Minecraft is violent enough.
The game is classified as appropriate for children seven and over in much of Europe and for children older than 10 in the United States. However, Turkey's family and social policy minister, Aysenur Islam, has initiated an investigation into suggestions that it encourages violence, the Haberturk website says. The website warns that if the government believes the game to be too violent, they can ask for the government to ban it on a national scale. The move was inspired by a journalist who informed Mrs Islam that players earn points for killing other characters - including women and asked her what her ministry would be doing regarding it. Pubgqa The Pan European Game Information group, which assigns ratings to computer games, says Minecraft contains "non-realistic-looking violence towards characters which, although human, are not very detailed".
A journalist from a Turkish gaming magazine says the ministry's concerns are unfounded. Kaan Gezer, an Leadergamer journalist, stated that she's never witnessed a child grab a sword and attack people due to Minecraft. "Stories like these can are what cause the Turkish video gaming industry to stall or even worsen." Minecraft is extremely popular with gamers of all ages. It reached its 100 millionth user in February 2014. Teachers in some schools in the UK have also played the game.
