Intro to Hip Hop Improv Workshop

Sunday, Mar 5th 6-9pm $40 Early Bird Special (thru 2/26) / $50 Week Of Pre-requisite: At least one level of long-form improv at any theater.

This 3-Hour musical improv workshop will get even the most beginner performers comfortable with free-style rapping and scene work. Improv instructors, Rachel Rosenthal & Douglas Widick will guide you through the basics of free-styling - showing you how to stop forcing the rhyme, and instead to gain access to the rhymes that have been in your catalogue since you were a kid. Also learn how to drill into the deal of your scene to create musical hooks that easily inform you and your scene partner, making it that much easier to find that perfect nugget to rap about! Learn how to set yourself up, find your flow, and weave your rapped verses in and out of your improv scene work.

Considered musical improv trailblazers among their peers, Hip Hop Comedy team, North Coast was named one of the “Top 10 Comedy Shows″ by Time Out NY. The have been featured on MTV and VH1 as well on as stages across the United States and Canada. This class is taught by cast members, Rachel Rosenthal and Douglas Widick.

North Coast Bawse of the Month: Katy Berry

This is a part of a series featuring a different North Coast members. This month Katy Berry answered a few questions about herself:

- How long have you been with North Coast? What do you do at North Coast? I’ve been a cast member with North Coast for two years. I auditioned to get on and totes crushed it, but the first time I did a show with the team I was so nervous my whole body went numb and I almost cried. I fought through it though, and now I’m addicted to rapping about cheese.   

- What’s the first song you memorized all the words to? I bought the single of “Stay” by Lisa Loeb and listened to it on repeat. I memorized the words wrong through, because I always sang: “So Mother Hubbard who was waitin’ for the others who were dyin’ since the day they were born.” I turned it into an existential nursery rhyme. Even as a child I was v subversive.  

- What’s something in your room you’d want to show off to us right now? What WOULDN’T I show you?! My room is a magical and mystical fortress of pussy power. I have a taxidermy deer head on the wall covered in scarves, killed by my dad in 1987, the year of my birth. The deer’s soul inhabited my body, obvi. Behind my bed is a huge tapestry of my face looking regal af, (a gift from my ex). And there’s a large almost life-size painting I did of my arse in twerk position, with a bush baby head, surrounded by a banana peel and a donut. It’s mad symbolic. Seriously though- I think girls’ rooms can sometimes become nesting grounds for negative energy because we pick ourselves apart in our mirrors and try on clothes and say “ugh I hate this or that.” When I moved into my current room, I resolved to make it a creative haven of self-love and positivity. I think it’s worked wonders.

North Coast Bawse of the Month: Bridin Clements

This is the first installment of a new series featuring a different North Coast members. This month, our brand new business manager, Bridin Clements is answering a few questions about herself:

-How long have you been with North Coast? What do you do at North Coast? I just joined North Coast this month! As business manager I coordinate scheduling, client negotiations, finances and marketing for the team.

-How long have you been in the theatre scene? I’ve been in working in theatre in New York for 6 years. Though I started backstage at my community theatre when I was 9! My background is in stage management. Now I work more on the business side of things. 

I’m currently Operations Manager for the production management firm Tinc Productions. I’ve also worked on the general management team for the New York Musical Theatre Festival, and the producing team for contemporary performance festival American Realness. In my own producing, I collaborate with writers and performance makers on developing and realizing new works. 

-What’s the first song you memorized all the words to? Um, I have no idea! The first album I owned was Backstreet Boys’ Millenium, but I had to share it with my sister. 

-What’s something in your room you’d want to show off to us right now? One of my latest art projects! I saved wine and beer bottles for about a year, and then spray painted them with designs and made paper flowers to put in them. If anyone needs weird handcrafted home decor, I’ve got you!
