DIY Roof Repairs - Is It Worth It?
Tumblr media
Roof repairs are one of those things that we all try to avoid. Mainly because they are so costly and not something we can just leave and forget about. If you’re anything like me you probably don’t like working at heights. The thought of climbing up a ladder to carry out a roof inspection fills me with dread.
Unlike other home DIY projects where a simple search on Youtube will uncover a bunch of relatively simple tutorials. Roof repairs are best left to an actual roofing contractor that is kitted out with the proper safety gear.
Luckily I haven’t had much cause for concern as we moved into a new house where the roof survey didn’t uncover anything untoward. But those of you that live in older houses may have hidden damages lurking under the surface. Or under the roof tiles to be more exact.
The problem with broken tiles is that when the damage becomes apparent. For example a large unpleasant damp patch on the ceiling. It’s often too late for a minor repair. As the damage has slowly been escalating over maybe a few months.
How To Prevent Roof Repairs
My advice would be, if you want to avoid costly roof repairs is to check the attic to see if any water has or can get into the house. This way you can catch it early and potentially avoid the need to call out a professional roofing contractor.
Tell tale signs to look out for could be:
Mould
Sunken roof joists
Light coming in ( Not through a window obviously )
Damp patches or puddles of water
If you are dead set on carrying out even the smallest of roof repairs to your property please ensure that you have someone close by in case of emergency. However please remember if you feel you are capable of mending a broken tile or fixing a leaky roof. There is a high chance that you will do more damage than good.
Safety should always be your main priority at all times. Risking your health is not worth saving a few quid by handling the repairs yourself.
