“Ready Player One”
Tumblr media
Imagine living in the era where people hide their identity to avoid real-world conflicts, people stop finding solutions to problems and fixing broken things, real-life relationships were taken for granted, and basically living a dystopian world. The movie entitled “Ready Player One” implies the need for human race to constantly find change but also the need to live in the reality. It shows a world full of injustices, chaos, and intangible things being patronized and worshiped. It also highlights the effects and setbacks of media and technology. Media and technology seem to affect the people living in that era negatively. It made them be unproductive and crippled. They are being manipulated by the fantasy and technology; we should be the one controlling our gadgets, but the movie shows the complete opposite. Looking on the brighter side, media and technology help us bridge a connection and relationship with others. It grows our social skills and helps cultivate our communication skills.
Why is there a necessity to adapt? Why do we need to socialize? Why do people constantly seek change? This movie and novel made me answer my own questions. We must adapt to change for us not to be stagnant and be a slave of our past. We need to socialize to meet random people that we did not expect to become our family. Furthermore, seeking change is seeking for betterment. This movie also opens my eyes to racism, human injustices, gender inequalities and many other pressing societal issues. Why do women feel the need to hide their gender to avoid being harassed by men around them? Why do people use their race privilege to have better stand on our society when in fact the color of skin does not equate to the quality of life we wish to have? We must speak up and recognize our voice to help the minority have the weight equivalent to the majority. These problems did not just happen now, these were being endure by our brothers and sisters way back technology was not yet discovered. We are lucky to be born being a digital native, having these platforms and resources give us the opportunity to fix these pressing issues the world currently facing. We must not turn a blind eye for those who are down rather, give them a helping hand to stand and have a courage to fight for the days to come. Lastly, make them realize that there is still a rainbow after the rain.

“Be Part of the Solution, Not the Problem”
Tumblr media
Access to media and technology is essential to educational success as well as work and economic development. Though, geographical, income-based, and racial/ethnic discrepancies in technology access persist and continuously thrive. Digital divide is a term used to describe the gap between people who have adequate knowledge of and access to media and/or technology and those who do not. Looking at the bigger picture, digital divide is not only limited to students. Many of these digital immigrants are also having a hard time coping up on the new platforms that are being introduce and used. Multiple challenges are being face by those who are vulnerable on this case day-to-day. As a student, a learner, a sibling, and a son to my parents, I did notice the effects and causes of digital divide first handedly. Unreliable internet connection, shortage of resources, lack of information needed, and the need to adapt and change in order to survive each day are some of the noticeable effects of digital divide.
The solution on this problem is a collaborative effort of everyone. As a student, acknowledging the power and right that we have is a step towards that vision. We should speak up unto things that could lead to the betterment of all. Let us be informed and educated about this topic. Giving empathy and showing care must be done. Kindness should be a default during these trying times. A simple action of empathy and kindness to someone could be the reason of the smile they will be wearing through out the day. The change we envision starts on your single step. Let us be part of the solution, not the problem.

“The Setbacks of Piracy”
Tumblr media
An anonymous once quoted, “The most miserable people are those who care only about themselves, understand only their own troubles and see only their own perspective.”. As our film and media producers work hard to produce international standardize movies and films, media and film piracy producers are also working twice as them. Patronage and widespread of media and film piracy in the Philippines is truly alarming. Philippines is one of the few countries who is on the top in terms of media piracy. Study shows during the year 2010, estimated 15 billion pesos was loss because of piracy here in our country. Does our government have actions for this problem? Does the government’s action enough to boycott media and film piracy? Do we still have hope on this problematic issue? Or media and film piracy will continue to prevail and takeover our entertainment industry?
Some of the few setbacks of piracy are: First, it is illegal. Second, it is risky. Lastly, it is unethical. Under the Cybercrime Law, acquiring any digital copy of any copyrighted material is now punishable by a fine and/or sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. The Intellectual Property Code and the Anti-Camcording Law were made to combat media and film piracy in the Philippines. Furthermore, pirated software has a high possibility to be infected with serious virus that could potentially harm and damage the user’s personal computer. Unknown sources and other unreliable sites where pirated films and software are found could contain harm. Lastly, patronage of media and film piracy means the user of which do not acknowledge the work of the original creator and thus, disregard the need to support authenticity. It is our right to accumulate profit but compromising the right of others stops us from practicing our own right. As I end my discussion, I would like to present words from Honorable John Kennedy, “The rights of every man are diminished when the rights of others are threatened.” Also, please be reminded that our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

“Living Life in Peace Vs. Living Life in Convenience”
Tumblr media
  Lorenz Earl C. Ipanag
Will there be a chance for the next generation to experience strolling on every aisle of the library finding their favorite book? Can our grandchildren still smell the unique aroma of pages of every novel and comics? Or can we still preserve a piece of our culture? These are some of the many questions I have. Life is an unending process of learning and discoveries, there are so many pages yet to unfold. In the advent of technology, there will be a big possibility of new media taking over the use of print and broadcast media. In the lighter note, this could make our life easier and flexible. Digitalize books, magazines, and newspapers are widespread making digital platforms/means present a simpler and much small format for storage, provided that it does not fade or can be altered. We should also take in consideration the adverse effect brought by the new media.
Living in that scenario, it is evident that millennials reduced their authentic life to gain more of their social life. Looking closely at the lives of those alleged individuals, new media will become a very massive part of their identity and day-to-day life. Receiving of emails from family abroad and forgetting the experience of writing a letter, socializing through smartphones and the use of radio/light waves rather than meeting them in a coffee shop sipping your favorite coffee, and/or just relying on the trending posts and news of your friends in Facebook rather than fact-checking and evaluating those information through visiting the nearest library. Those are just the glimpse of instances and situations we can experience if the said happening would take place. Taking away the importance and crucial role of media and information literacy, erroneous and immoral use of the medium would result into much dreadful outcome in the long run. We must grasp for change for us not to be stagnant but let us not forget the difference between things that are authentic and faux. Antontio Gramsci once said, “The challenge of modernity is to live without illusions and without being disillusioned.”.

“Understanding the Relevance of Information Literacy in the Midst of Social Era”
Ms. Julia Gillard once said, “Our future growth relies on competitiveness and innovation, skills and productivity... and these in turn rely on the education of our people”. The minds of our innovators truly wander. Change and growth in living can not only be imagined but are now being experienced. Media leads this generation the path into either being fruitful or awful. As defined, Information Literacy is a set of abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information as well as understanding of how information is produced and valued. Information Illiteracy in the other hand is the lack of knowledge pertaining to the proper use of information that could lead into a hindrance of growth and innovation to various aspect of life. Irrelevant use of information could spark a war between two parties, also, chaos and misunderstanding will be rampant. As the quantity of information we receive arises, its quality must not be taken for granted. As a part of this generation, educating ourselves with the proper use of information would greatly assist us unto becoming a generation where confusion, uncertainty, and hoax news could not foster and prevail.
Nowadays, as a 21st century learners, we are bombarded with information making us more vulnerable of false news and erroneous posts. Few of these information(s) are not factual and healthy. In fact, many of these are full of lies, obscenity and are toxic in nature. Right now, it is an advantage of me that I've got to realize these things. I know what word to use when conversing in social media, I also know how to handle myself whenever misunderstandings arise. We should be all aware on the words we are using and the posts we are posting, we must evaluate whether the material is true or just merely false information. We should correctly utilize the knowledge we have to share with others. Lastly, we should think not only for ourselves but also for the good others.

“Media and Government: A Love-Hate Relationship”
The country that we lived in is a democratic and republican type of governance which allows its people and subordinates to freely express their opinion. According to section 3, article 3 of the 1987 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines, civilian authority is, at all times, supreme over the military. Which, therefore, what comes from the people, must be served for the people. With the rampant usage of media and other platforms, the views and opinions of the people could be easily forwarded to the government which will be then on should take an action for. Media plays a vital and crucial role of enlightening and informing the people. The media could aid the public on raising awareness and advocating such important issues that the majority should be informed of. Mass media could also take part having an emphatic role on awakening people against social injustices and pressing issues that prevail in the society.
Media serves as a bridge from the people to the government. Rules and regulations made by the government will be then laid on to its citizens, thereafter, opinions and views are expressed to make authorities and the higher ups aware about the public’s feeling. Nowadays, media has been and will always be so powerful that it could make or break a government. There are lots of problems and drawbacks that we are facing right now, and the media should engage itself on connecting the public’s call for help to the government. By addressing itself to the needs of the people, it can strengthen the power of democracy. The partnership of the media and the government could lead to the betterment of not only the society we are living but also for the future generation. Those who have voice must speak for those who are voiceless.

“The Value of Being a Media and Information Literate Individual”
With the arrival of digital technologies and new discoveries, awareness of media and its proper usage are acquiring crucial importance. As we may all know, we are in an era of rapid change. According to Functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS) of 2013, 96.5 percent or 9 out of 10 Filipinos from 10 to 64 years old were literate. As these advancements widen their reach, the threats they entail also spread like wildfire, and their worst aim is the youth of today. Basing on the data that I gathered, Media and Information greatly influence our day to day lives. Avoiding its adverse effects and being a responsible reader would lead us to a path where harm, chaos, confusions, and misunderstanding could not foster and grow. Reading and just relying on the surface of the context is not enough for us to verify the source but making an additional effort to research, deeply understand, and critique its background would increase its validity.
Disregarding the fact that an average Filipino child now spends 34 hours in front of digital screens every week, two hours higher than the global average of 32 hours is obviously alarming. These innocent lives are exposed and vulnerable to fallacious posts, cyber-bullying, addiction, and unethical use of internet. Such problems that we are currently facing could be lessen by educating and assessing ourselves with the questions — What is the context about? Where does this information came from? Why is that so? How it is published? Is the author credible? On the contrary, focusing on its bright side, being literate on this topic could help us increase the ability and proficiency of students to express, encourages critical thinking, encourages us to actively take part in public affairs as a citizen, and also teaches us to not be easily deceived by any fake news and propaganda.
