“UHI, the university for integration & dialogue. Encouraging constructive communication.
Vote Laura to establish focus groups across the region to advocate for positive change.”
Hello! I’m an artist & writer doing my masters in Art & Social Practice.
I am running for VPHE because I thoroughly enjoyed the responsibility when I was a student representative last year. I’m in favour of peer support groups as they have proven to be an invaluable resource in order to make the most of the student experience. To gain qualitative research on how to improve student’s quality of education, previously I conducted student surveys. However, this year I want to take it further by initiating focus groups at each campus where students can convey their ideas on topics that matter to them. Once elected I will keep a weekly vlog https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCV-r43RmK9Hnyo2AyY9_icg that students can comment on to help setup & coordinate these students spaces to inform in depth discussions to action planning, and of course to share a place to meet like-minded people.

The Otolith Group's monograph Xenogenesis, tracing eight years of a 20 year practice is nearly complete. The OG was founded by artists and theorists Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun in London in 2002. The calcium carbonate microcrystals of the otolith within the inner ear operates as a kind of black box for withholding intention, gauging impact, measuring expectation and calculating discrepancy. Articulating the idea of the Otolith with the idea of the Group alludes to the histories of collective practices invented by artists that theorise and writers that practice art within and beyond the precincts of the Disunited Kingdom. The post-cinematic practice of Eshun and Sagar is informed by an aesthetics of the essayistic that takes the form of a science fiction of the present in which moving images, sonic speculations, performances, publications and installations explore the intertemporal crises and interscalar catastrophes of the Racial Capitalocene.

I call myself a lucky one to be able to be part of this collective spirit, witnessing changes that are bringing the world into the future, an unknown area we shall discover together.
Are you coming with me?
All I can contribute is this body.
This body is a shelter for a million of spirits of our ancestors— who see the path set out before us with loving peace and care with sadness and loss along the endless thread of our uncertain future.
And I shall be sorrowed, remembering them being displayed in a human zoo by people who lived with a colonial mind.
These same colonial minds make us strangers to ourselves, forced to witness ourselves as others, conditioned and classified by colours that divide: white and blue, black and yellow, red and green: borders, and flags.
This body, is indeed a shelter, of my feminine treasures, no one else will determine to whom it shall belong, to what it shall become to where it shall live.
This body is a shelter, of networking, of systems, which give a complete life and responsibilities beyond culture, classes, and language.
This body is a shelter, that provides tools for breathing, for as long as I breathe, I shall not stop hoping to have enough food for the starving, enough education for all who cannot afford it, enough beds for the homeless, for all workers to be paid equally for their skills and have the right of freedom.
This body is not to be sheltered from dangers— but to be fearless in facing them.
What can the past give to a stranger in this shelter? Something in order to be accepted as an equal being, regardless of gender, skin colour, and belief?
I am not a dreamer, but someone whose pace is patience for the coming transformation.
I want to ask you a favour: Be actively part of our collective spirits and awareness. Love what is given to us: the energy, the nature, and the soul.

ARTISTS IN PRESIDENTS: soundtrack; Melati Suryodarmo : TRANSMISSION “This body is a shelter, / of networking, of systems, / which give a complete life / and responsibilities / beyond culture, classes, and language.”
Punctuated by gasps, inhalations, whispers, and nonverbal vocalizations, performance artist Melati Suryodarmo bridges the connections between her own body and the social bodies that sustain us. In a poem that probes the boundaries of oration and performance, Suryodarmo shows how we might find empowerment within our own bodies as the basis for collective transformation.

Video-Screening 20: MELATI SURYODARMO, 24901 Miles, 2015 Watch on performanceartarchive.com or on BLACK KIT vimeo: https://vimeo.com/639488503 Melati Suryodarmo (b. 1969, Solo, Indonesia) graduated from the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunscheweig, Germany under the tutelage of Marina Abramović and Anzu Furukawa with a Meisterschüler qualification in Performance Art. Her practice is informed by Butoh, dance and history, among others. Her work is the result of ongoing research in the movements of the body and its relationship to the self and the world. These are enshrined in photography, translated into choreographed dances, enacted in video or executed in live performances. Suryodarmo is interested in the psychological and physical agitations that may be from the self or the world but somehow result in lasting change the individual. This belief in change or growth through bodily action belies her early induction in meditation, which she continues to practice. The body is the home for memories and the self, rather than the individual itself, and the body’s system. Suryodarmo has presented her work in locations all over the world, including Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan; National Museum of Contemporary Art Korea, Gwacheon, South Korea; Kiasma, Helsinki, Finland; National Art Centre Tokyo, Japan; National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, Australia; Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan; Para Site, Hong Kong; Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland, Australia; Seoul Museum of Art, South Korea; Singapore Art Museum, Singapore. Festivals include 5th Guangzhou Triennale (2015), Guangzhou, China; Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale (2009), Incheon, South Korea; Manchester International Festival (2009), Manchester, U.K.; and Manifesta 7 (2008), Bolzano, Italy. Since 2007, Suryodarmo has been organizing an annual Performance Art Laboratory and Undisclosed Territory, a performance art festival, in Solo, Indonesia. In 2012, she founded “Studio Plesungan”, an art space for performance artists to use as a laboratory. In 2017, she served as Artistic Director for Jiwa, the 17th Jakarta Biennale. She currently lives and works in Solo, Indonesia. https://melatisuryodarmo.com

Lea Vergine: ‘Body Art and Performance’ - As the basis of Body Art and of all of the other operations presented in this book, one can discover the unsatisfied need for a love that extends itself without limit in time… the need for what is called ‘primary love’. This is what gives art its dimension of inevitable delusion and failure. This unobtained love is what transforms itself into the aggressively, that is typical of all of these actions, events, photo-sequences and performances.
