Week 12 – Public Art
For this weeks art activity, I decided to make an interactive tri-fold board for my Eagle Scout Award Ceremony that would take place in December. Originally, I was planning to follow my requirements given from my troop in order to make the tri-fold board. However, I decided to go out of the way in order to implement this weeks activity plan in it too. For the tri-fold, the general requirement were to put pictures of my past and my time spent throughout my years as a scout and pictures of my Eagle Scout project. However, I decided to add pictures of my present and what I mainly do now since I am not as involved as before in scouting. I also added a string across the board for visitors attending the ceremony in order for them to attach any pictures they had with me. I was able to retrieve the pictures by reaching out to them to send any pictures we had together. From there, I was able to print them out into small sizes in order to attach it with a clothespin. I also left some space in the middle of the board for them to sign/leave a message. Honestly, I thought this activity went pretty well. In fact, my tri-fold board could possibly even stand out from the rest thanks to the additional features.

Week 12 – Artist – Abramovic-Althamer
Marina Abramovic is Serbian performance artist whose works expand our views regarding the body and its limits and endurance, feminism, the connection of the performer and the viewer, and what the mind could possibly do. She tends to emphasize pain, danger, and exhaustion in her works to visualize the interaction between the audience and the art. Pawel Althamer is a Polish contemporary sculptor and performer who specializes in collaborative, installation, and video art. Althamer is well known for engaging his community by referring to their suggestions for the idea that he would then implement into his work. Abramovic and Althamer's works are similar to each other in the way they tend have the audience heavily involved in their works. Abramovic engages her audience by creating a performance where the audience would basically almost automatically express their perspectives about it. Althamer on the other hand engages in audience since his work is a reflection of them. Abramovic's works mainly consists of the human body, while Althamer's works are based off of sculptures. From my perspective of these artists and their works, I feel like Abramovic's works display lots of emotions since it involves the outstanding possibilities of the human body and mind while Althamer's works generally reflects our society and world.

Week 11 – Artist – Choice
For this week's artists, I chose Peter Lik and Bob Halstead. Lik and Halstead are both photographers whose main focus is nature and the wilderness. Lik spends time on land, taking landscape photos, while Halstead spends time in the water, taking photos in the ocean.
Growing up in Australia, Lik was inspired to be outside in the wilderness to capture photos with his first camera as a child. From there, he fell in love with taking pictures of the nature, which led to his life of traveling across the world to take pictures at famous national parks around the world. In the United States, his photos are displayed in his art gallery, inspiring viewers of his work to travel to the place he took the picture at in order to check out the scenery and to try to recreate the image he took. In order to capture the perfect picture, he would spend the entire day at one location just to get the perfect lighting and angle from the sun, and often take panoramic pictures in order to capture all the details.
Halstead on the other hand grew up in the United Kingdom and found his passion for scuba diving throughout his years attending London University. Halstead would go on scuba diving adventures to capture his findings with his underwater camera. Although many would assume that Halstead would capture pictures of the marine life, he rather spent time uncovering the remains from the history of World War II, such as sunken ships, aircrafts, and vessels.
Introduce your two artists and briefly explain what they do.
Compare and contrast their style of work.
Explain each artists history and how they found their way to their passion.
Did any of these artists leave a mark for the future? How so?

Week 11 – Art Activity – Choice
What did you choose to do for this week's art activity?
Where did you get the idea for this art activity?
What were the steps you needed to do in order to complete the activity?
How long did this art activity take you?
Were you satisfied with your final result? Is there anything you could have done better?
For this weeks art activity, I chose to try creating a string art out of yarn strings, supported by nails and wood board. I was inspired by the string art examples I came across while browsing on social media. The image I decided to create was the Denver Broncos football team logo. I began by printing the image of the logo I found online. From there, I went to go buy the yarns that matches the color of the logo and the wooden frame. Fortunately, I did not have to buy the nails because there were available for me at home already. In order to aligns the nails to make the logo, I hammered in the nails with the printed image of the logo on the wooden board before removing the paper. The project took about 6 hours of work split into three days. I was pretty satisfied with the final result because it looks just like the image from online. If I could go back to redo my project, I would try to create a pattern for the strings so it looks neater and not all scattered. I had the strings all scattered since I was worried that the colors would not fill in.

Week 10 – Art Activity – Intermedia
For this activity, my idea was to explain how the younger generation are well known to spend money on luxury items they do not really need, especially luxury items such as limited sneakers or designer clothing. In common cases, people would use up their savings in order to keep up with the latest releases. My three media choices were photo, painting, and currency, such as coins. I ended up using coins since I thought it would greatly represent the part where young consumers would use up their savings to spend on items they would not need. The coins would show how these people are squeezing out the lasts of their remaining money in order to spend. In my opinion, I thought that this message was conveyed in a manner where the viewer could easily understand since I created an image of a shoe out of the coins, to represent an example of a consumer item that the younger generation would waste their money on. Also, the image of the shoe consisted of the coins could have definitely been more detailed, but there was not enough coins in order to do so. Therefore, this could also represent the situation of a spender struggling to spare enough money to buy the items they want.

Week 10 – Artist – Joseph DeLappe & Micol Hebron
Joseph DeLappe is an American artist from the United Kingdom who is well known for his works that reflects upon contemporary issues regarding politics through the use of new media installations and interactive gaming performances. Micol Hebron is a interdisciplinary artist who focuses her works on the activism of feminism. The types of media DeLappe uses to display his art could vary from taking pictures or using common objects such as pictures in the picture frame, carboard, or paper bills. The types of media Hebron uses to display her art are mainly paintings, sculptures, and photos. I would think they would choose their media to explain their ideas based on the message/idea of their artwork. There were some forms of media that these artists used that I would never thought would serve as a media for art. For example, I would not expect DeLappe to use a street scene from the video game, GTA, in order to demonstrate the ongoing issue of homicide in some areas of the nation. Similarities I see in DeLappe's and Hebron's works is that they reflect the issues that are well known in our society. DeLappe's works are based off the recurring problems in the community while Hebron's works are based off defining feminism. Popular social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok could serve as medias that DeLappe or Hebron have not used that might be compelling in their work since it would bring a greater audience to their works.

Week 8 - Art Activity - Photo Story
Tumblr media
Every morning, I would usually start my morning at my local shoe store to buy any pairs that are profitable.
Tumblr media
I would then be finished with buying shoes in stores once I no longer have space in my vehicle.
Tumblr media
Once we get back home, we would unload the trunk and take our success pictures which we usually do in order to see our progress over the course of the past year.
Tumblr media
Shoes that I have successfully purchased online would also be arriving at my front door as well, which I would need to take inside.
Tumblr media
From there, I would sort out each the shoes, by the style and sizes that I have.
Tumblr media
After knowing the pairs and sizes I got, I would log it down into my spreadsheet in order to keep track of the inventory.
Tumblr media
From there, the pairs would be sorted into stacks of 6 or 9 pairs, that way they would fit into a medium or large box to be shipped.
Tumblr media
Each of the boxes would be sealed with shipping tape and include a label, that way it could be sent to a store my cousin and I share in Washington, for the pairs to be sold

Week 8 - Artist - Addario - Cardiff - Miller
Lynsey Adarrio is an American photojournalist representing New York Times, National Geographic, and Time Magazine. Her works mainly highlight the ongoing conflicts and crises that take place in the middle east. Over the past 15 years, she created works reflecting on all of the humanitarian crises that occurred, awarding her multiple awards. Her pictures are very vivid, with the angles, light, and symmetry all taken into consideration prior to taking the picture. This would allow the reader to visualize the reality of the crises she informs with the picture.
Janet Cardiff and George Miller work with sounds in order to send the message to their audience. They are known for creating sound installation in order to host their audio and video walks. For the audience, they would able to see a small film with an audio in order to visualize the artwork Cardiff and Miller created at the spot. Their works would generally correlate with real locations, so that way the visitor could also visit the same location where they created the film and to reimagine it.
Adarrio's and Cardiff and Miller's works are similar since they both provide visuals for the audience to interpret the message. Adarrio uses pictures, while Cardiff and Miller uses pictures and audio. Adarrio's picture would reflect the ongoing conflict in our world in order to explain the message, while Cardiff and Miller uses film and audio with a certain location in order to convey their message. This would also show how Adarrio only needs the picture to create her work, while Cardiff and Miller's works consist of more than one factor (picture, film, and audio).
I would not necessarily say that the seriousness of Adarrio's work is more important than that of Cardiff and Miller. Generally when it comes to art, I feel like all messages from the works are the same, as long as the viewer is able to interpret and understand it. I would also believe that the whimsical mind exploration would fulfill some deep human need since it would allow the viewer to takeaway something from the artwork, whether it is a lesson or simply something they never thought of. I believe that getting the chance to experience something new is always valuable.
If I decided to pick up cameras and microphones to pursue a career in storytelling, I would prefer a career like Adarrio's. Growing up, I was always exposed to taking pictures during my family vacations. With that childhood experience I could see myself enjoying taking unique pictures and to come up with a message behind it.

Week 6 - Artist - Camille and Sarah Elgart
Looking at Camille's work, she tends to express her messages in her songs, which usually give off an enthusiastic vibe since her main genre is pop. Sarah Elgart's work on the other hand expresses meanings through dances. The performance would generally be detailed in order to set the scene and give the message. For example, the dance movements and outfit the dancers wear would correlate to the theme of the entire process.
The flow of these two artists seems to be free and relaxed, as there is always a part of the work where it is evident when they are set in their zone. For example, Elgart's dancers are not always perfectly uniformed. Each dancers could just vibe on their own throughout the process and relax, allowing them to be more expressive rather than focusing on the others. Throughout Camille's performances, it would be obvious that she is in her zone throughout, especially on the part where she would hit the high note while singing. It is also noticeable that Camille is in her zone by the voice she has throughout her performances. Overall, both of these artists allow themselves to stand out simply by being in their zone and relax and give it their truest expressions.
I would be able to find connections between my automatic art and the works of these artists. Both of the results, my art and their art, each had its unique aspects and values that would allow the viewers to distinguish it from other arts.

As I compare the actual CSULB map compared to the one i drew out based on my memories, I was impressed enough by the fact I was able to recall more locations on the campus than I would have expected myself to, or maybe my expectations were too low. General mistakes I made were to not be able to know where everything is, and to draw a specific place too large of a size where I would forget the locations next to it that were less important. For example, I made the Horn Center too large on the map, making me realize that the soccer field was supposed to be placed next to the Horn Center and the pyramid parking structure. A possible reason explaining why I was able to remember a good amount of locations from the map is because I spent the first week of my college career touring the campus on my own, figuring out where everything was. In addition, I commuted to school, which allowed me to experience parking at the pyramid structure, which was located inconveniently on the other side of the campus, which meant I had to walk far to my classes. From there, I would get used to knowing the locations I would pass by in order to get to my classes.
My experience of the automatic drawing was more of a relaxing experience, as there were no specific requirements for this activity other to simply stay calm and chill. The result of my drawing, surprisingly was interesting to me, since I have seen popular artworks throughout my life that is similar to this. Throughout the drawing, i was not really paying much attention to what I was sketching out. To be honest, half of the time, I kind of zoned out and just let my hands do whatever it wanted to as I closed my eyes to relax. Having the drawing done on the floor with relaxation as the main requirement, I felt in the zone and definitely felt an experience of flow.

Reflecting on my zine, I was motivated to create a guide for beginners to create a side hustle from profiting off of buying and selling sneakers. This basic guide would be something I wish I had access to when I first started, since my early days of reselling would be mainly based off of trial and error, which put me at a risk of losing money. Referring to conveying the information to the reader, I think there is a good amount of information, since all the basic steps into starting is provided. Referring to the details of the zine however, I felt like it could have been better. Unfortunately for me, I am currently on a road trip this week and forgot to bring my color pencils. I was only limited to using a blue and red pen. if I could recreate this zine, i would definitely add more color and little details to the images I was drawing that way the viewer could get a clearer idea. Other ideas that would inspire me to create other zines could be any memorable moments or accomplishments I have or will have experienced throughout my lifetime.

Week 4 - Artists OTW - Tom Sachs and Johanna Fateman
Looking at this week's artists comparison, I am excited to learn more about Tom Sachs, since I was one of the lucky customers that was able to successfully purchase his limited edition pair that he collaborated with Nike. From there, I am also motivated to get to know Johanna Fateman and to compare and contrast the two artists. Tom Sachs is well known as a sculptor, who generally specializes in blending in the ideals of our modern culture and recreating them in his works. Johanna Fateman is well known as a songwriter, musician, and a record producer.
Tumblr media
In this work by Tom Sachs, he decided to portray the rules in his studio using creativity. These rules, also known as "bullets", are not at all strict to others. Instead, it reflects the tradition and environment of the typical norms that are practiced inside of a creative working area. I found this work to be pretty interesting since it would give the reader a visual of an enjoyable environment where creativity is promoted in a positive manner. Throughout my life, especially in school, we were always taught to learn and do things in a specific manner. According to these norms by Sachs however, allows me to kind of think outside of the box and be more creative.
Tumblr media
In this work by Johanna Fateman, it seems like she was inspired by the society she was exposed to as she probably either grew up there and currently live there. In this artwork, it appears to be a scenario where somebody has just passed away, as indicated by the casket in the center of the image. This incident must have brought the community together to mourn the death of the significant one. This artwork could be relatable to my life since it would be similar to a death of someone that was famous or iconic to a society. From there many people who felt like they knew the deceased would get together to be in the moment.

Week 3 - Artists OTW - Luke Jerram & Susan Aldworth
For this weeks artist comparison, I chose to compare Luke Jerram and Susan Aldworth, since both has created art relating to the field of biology. Jerram is known for creating three-dimensional art such as sculptures and installations. Aldworth on the other hand is known for specializing in visual art. Interesting enough, both of these artists not only created a single art that was science related, but they made an entire set of them to present as a collection. Jerram created glass installations of the common viruses known to mankind. Aldworth had a different idea and created prints of the brain scans from patients that gave her permission to observe their brains.
Tumblr media
Jerram's "Giant COVID-19" glass installation reflected the microscopic details of what the virus looks like. This installation would allow the audience to get a better understanding of the general structure of the virus that have changed our lives. From a student's perspective, I found this so interesting since Jerram was able to incorporate the little details of the virus into his work. He was able to give a visual aid of the structures of the virus. From there, knowing what a structure looks like, it would definitely help students learn more effectively about the functions, especially if the student learns better with a visual aid.
Tumblr media
Aldworth's "Art and the Nature of Consciousness" print shows us an image of a brain scan. This print would show the activity that is taking place inside of the brain of the patient receiving the brain scan. Surprisingly enough, the unique formation and shapes could be converted into art. I would find this piece of artwork interesting because the artwork would pertain to the patient of the brain scan, which allows the patient to feel special. From the way I perceive this artwork, it is basically similar to how you would ask a person to paint a portrait of you. instead, with this method, you could simply get an art print of your own brain scan. Aldworth's method of using the brain scan to create a print makes it extraordinary since each patient would get different results from the brain scan, which allow the image on each print to be different and unique from each other.

Week 3 - Art & My Major
My project idea was to find some flowers from exotic plants and to dissect them. From there, I would then find the stomata of from the flower and observe what it would look like under the microscope. The stomata would first have to be placed on a glass film. From there, the film would be dyed by a fluid that would allow us to see the microscopic content of the stomata. Prior research that would have to take place would include looking for examples of flowers that has microscopic images from the stomata. I would also need to learn how to properly prepare the stomata under the microscope. In order to execute this project, I would have to take a visit to my local community park, or anywhere that has plants for me to take some flowers from. I believe that the only issue preventing me from being able to execute this activity is that I do not have access to a microscope, and I would be too inexperienced with preparing substances in order to be seen under a microscope. I would determine that the project is successful if it is similar to the examples I have researched prior to conducting the project. For example, the image is an example of a stomata from a lilac seen under the microscope. I think my major can be enhanced by thinking about art since we would be able to play around with our samples to make it like interesting under the microscope, whether it comes to chemically adjusting our samples or to adding a dye to change the color. Art could empower my major by allowing us to visualize the content we are learning, making it easier to understand.

Reflecting on this activity, I thought it was pretty interesting since it was my first time using plaster to create a model sculpture. I was also happy to work with my classmate, Phong, at the beach, where we also got to meet Professor Zucman. Although the beach supplied us with some of the essential materials we needed, the entire process was challenging. To begin with, the sand was too fragile in order for us to make our mold in a hole as instructed. As we were slowly removing our hand or foot, the sand would start to fall down and destroy our mold shape. After trying several times, Phong and I decided to just make a deep handprint and footprint before filling them with the plaster. We were able to get a clearer result doing so. Taking it away with this activity, I could see myself using this method in order to create a sculpture as a memorable gift in the future. If I was able to go back and redo this project, I would hope to use a different type of sand that would actually stick in its position after I remove my hand from the hole.

Week 2 - Artist - Leite & Donovan
Throughout their career, sculptors Juliana Cerqueira Leite and Tara Donovan were able to inspire people from around the world. Brazilian based, Leite would reflect her works based on the human body. Her sculptures would then reflect her culture and the ongoing issues that her generation. On the other hand, Donovan, who is American based, on the other hand would utilize common materials to implement on her works. She would then create an environmental vision of the world given the information of how we use these common materials.
Leite and Donovan overall has a creative way of displaying the meaning throughout their works. Leite hopes to display the meaning through the body parts and gestures shown in her sculptures, while Donovan hopes to do the same using materials consumers rely on to visualize the environment. Leite's works could be perceived by relating to the current ongoing issues in our world. These issues could vary depending on a small society or an issue involving the entire world. Donovan's works could be perceived by practicing minimalism in order to create an artwork. For example, she could use something as simple as plastic water bottles to create an animal figure from.
If I were going to start a Sculpture or Installation career, my inspiration source would most likely come from Donovan's works. My works would be similar to her based on the usage of materials. However, unlike the way Donovan uses the material to create a bigger sculpture with meaning, I would just use the object itself. The focus of doing this would be to allow the audience to come up with their own meaning of the object. From here, the goal would be to remind people that everyone has a difference perspective, and that we should only respect the differences instead of criticizing it.
