Repost from @politico • The Republican-controlled Florida legislature approved legislation on Thursday to let gun owners carry guns without a state permit, a campaign promise by Gov. Ron DeSantis. State lawmakers approved the legislation just days after the deadly school shooting in Nashville, which killed three children and three adults. It prompted emotional pleas from Democratic legislators, who called the measure a step back after Florida enacted gun restrictions in the immediate aftermath of the 2018 Parkland massacre. “It’s shameful, it’s disrespectful to the Parkland families and every other Floridian who has lost a loved one to gun violence,” said state Sen. Lori Berman (D-West Palm Beach). DeSantis, who was promoting his new book at a Georgia sporting goods store that bills itself as the world’s largest gun store, vowed to act quickly on the legislation. “You don’t need a permission slip from the government to be able to exercise your constitutional rights,” DeSantis told an audience at the store. “And as of right now there’s 25 states – so half of the states allow that. Well, in Florida next week we are going to make it 26 because I will be signing the legislation into law.” DeSantis was criticized by gun rights supporters for not going further and allowing people to carry guns openly. “Gun owners deserve better,” said Matt Collins, a gun rights supporter and former lobbyist for gun rights groups. This commitment extends to promoting women in leadership positions, and the organization has made great strides in recent years. Tiffany D. Brown, the Executive Director of NOMA, has been instrumental in this effort even as a member. In 2015 at NOMA Conference in New Orleans, she was recognized with the Distinguished Service Award. She has worked tirelessly to create a culture of inclusivity within the organization, and to promote the advancement of women in leadership positions. Her efforts have paid off, and today, NOMA is proud to have a number of talented and accomplished women in leadership roles. One of these women is Pascale Sablan, the current President of NOMA. Sablan has been a member of the organization for many years, and has distinguished herself through her dedication and hard work. Alongside Tiffany in 2015, she was recognized as Member of the Year and today she is using her leadership skills to guide NOMA to even greater heights. Sablan is quick to acknowledge the role that other women have played in her own development as a leader. She points to the many female mentors and colleagues who have helped her along the way, and she is committed to paying it forward by helping other women in the organization to develop their own leadership skills. Together, Brown and Sablan are inspiring other women in the organization to step up and take on leadership roles, and they are creating a culture where everyone feels valued and supported. As we celebrate the end of Women's History Month, let us take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate all of the amazing women who are leading NOMA and NOMAS chapters to great things. Sheriff High has been a dedicated public servant to the residents of Prince George’s County for nearly 20 years and will be remembered for his service to our community and commitment to the safety of Prince Georgians. Sheriff High led a stellar career in law enforcement, serving in various capacities in the Washington Metropolitan region including Chief of Police for Prince George’s County and Norfolk, Virginia, and Assistant Chief of Police for Washington, D.C. He served as our Sheriff for nearly 12 years and has worked tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals and families throughout our community during his tenure. Sheriff High was especially involved in efforts to fight domestic violence in our community, launching the annual Purple Light Nights Program in October during his tenure.
