Evaluation
So, my aims for this project were to shoot a Fashion project over 10 weeks. I wanted to shoot in studio and other locations so that I could have a variety of shots. I wanted some refined, clean, well-lit shots of the fashion and the models and then more candid editorial styled shots on location to show the fashion in real life settings. So, to overview the plan this project I made a timescale plan of when I was going to shoot and edit etc. I planned each shoot individually thinking about the different lighting and style I would use in each shoot. When developing just thought of ways to make it better and how I needed to shoot to get my desired shots that would stay in keeping with my brief and plan. I planned more shoots to begin with but ended up shooting twice in the studio and twice on location due to model availability and feedback from my lecturer. After he had seen the first two location shoots it was clear I already had enough shots but to create even more variety I utilised my studio shoots and kept to my plan creating more refined shots here but with the added challenged of replicating my on-location vibe with the studio images. During development I made changes to the lighting I wanted due to practical reasons on location as flash was unneeded and my LED panels and reflector outside worked well. In studio I created a different lighting style to what I had planned due to feedback that I needed a moodier style of light after my first studio shoot. These were the major changes. In terms of styling and models I found this quite easy as I had a lot of inspiration images in my plan and pieces of my own fashion that id be able to replicate the looks with and I ended up creating some of my own looks. The styling changed in terms of the vibe though, I was originally going for a messier vibe with character influences of Effy from skins and jane from breaking bad, but my styling leaned more towards classy Kate moss, 90’s vouge styled like shots with a dark feminine edge. The location shots were more relaxed and more focused on the models face and their laid back at home style. And the studio shots were like the models all dressed up and ready to go out. That’s a change from the plan as originally - I said I wanted the location shots to be an image of the dressed-up style in ever day use. The number of models I was planning to use also changed as the other models I asked were unavailable, so I only used 3 different models rather than the amount I planned. I still manged to get enough variety in my final images though. I learnt some things from this project, the first thing being how to create a laid-back studio atmosphere. I did this with the use of small talk, music and a fun take on the shoot. I also learned how to make the model feel at ease by showing them the pictures as I went along so they could see the progress and adjust themselves if they knew they looked of centre etc. Another thing I learnt was time management as it was a challenge fitting in the shoots and all the editing time in between whilst having images to sow each week for my 1 to1 with my lecturer. I was constantly thinking of what next. I developed my skills with the studio lighting a lot during this project, I was not as confident before as I am now. I was problem solving and fixing my own problems without too much assistance. I’ve also learnt that it takes time to get perfect lighting and you just must keep shooting until you get in your groove and start producing the shots that fit every part of your brief. A big positive from this shoot was seeing I had the capability of styling and producing a completely different style of shoot and I was happy seeing my models and lecturers come on board and see how my vision was unfolding. It has also helped me see that there’s lots more I can do next time to make the project even better. Firstly, I could contact way more models so I would have more variety. I will start out earlier next time and try a build up new models and relationships with contacts throughput the year. Another thing I would do is plan the lighting more specifically so that’s it’s easier to recreate in the studio and a less loose idea of what I want. I would undertake more shoots next time to give myself more product shots as I feel I didn’t give this enough priority when shooting as I got distracted by shooting just the models and finding the perfect expression for them. I also feel like I shot too many images, so it made editing very hard as I had so many to choose from at the end, this dragged my timescale for editing out by a lot and made me behind on all the developmental aspects of the project. I feel like overall my images do work together and I like how I’ve kept some in colour just as the quality is best like that and they still work as a set. The dark feminine look changed slightly and so did the plan for the shots, but it still adheres to what I set out to do and I’m happy with the unique classy shots I got and the fun I had during the shooting process.

Graded Unit - Expenses
props and styling was free as i used my own resources so i only had to pay for a few travel booking fees, printing and means of presentation which amounts to around £60 altogether so far.

Styling
Styling throughout the shoots was done by myself, i took inspiration from my Pinterest board a lot of the images feature in my plan. I created the looks myself and put them together on set. Some was experimental and depended on what the model felt comfortable in but it worked very well and was a fun process.

Styling and Influences - how its changed
these were my character influences that i mentioned in the plan. i want to show how my theme and look to the shoots has changed throughout.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I do think after ive shot that my whole theme has moved towards the classier dark feminine vibe rather than these  more messy female characters that i was using as my influences. Ive leaned more towards the classic model, free spirited womanly aesthetic as my shoots progressed, the two location shoots definitely have more of a link to the original vibe, but paired with my studio work i think it brings a more civilised focussed on the fashion aspect to the work.
Kate Moss - Influence
Id say a lot of my research images are of Kate moss and after looking up many of her photos, I saw the way she could style any kind of outfit if it was worn in the correct way and if she was just her natural self and looked comfortable in it. Yes she could pose in more out there ways but at the end of the day it was her face and natural unforced ease that made the photograph work. I tried to make my models feel at ease so i could capture their natural flare without it looking forced and made sure they really enjoyed what they were wearing and became a new character in their style but still keeping their own originality.

Changes to the plan in terms of techniques and lighting
In my plan I stated i would be trying different lighting techniques, however, this changed a lot throughout my shoots
In shoot 3 I was planning on using a clean white background with a high key lighting look. I stuck to this but i only used two lights not three as that was all i need for the desired affect.
Another technique i was going to try was using a grayscale background with a lower light to make it look like there was light on the background coming from below. My plans changed for this shoot as i wanted an entirely moodier feel so i ended up making the lighting more low key and using a singular light and a darker backdrop. I experimented a lot with different lighting modules and positions as you can see in the contact sheets from shoot 4.
Another technique i wanted to use predominantly was and off white background with high contrasting darker shapes in front made from the models clothes and figure etc. did try this in shoot 3 but i softened the lighting and leaned more towards the clean white as it looked better with what my model was wearing.
For my location shoots i wanted to use flash lighting but after thought i decided LED panels would look the best in my indoors location and natural reflected light was sufficient for my outdoors car location.

Research - Steven Meisel
After Feedback from my Lecturer with the studio shoot with Winter my model it was suggested i look at Steven Meisel's work so i can achieve some moodier styled shots with a less staged feel.
Steven Meisel is an American fashion photographer who is one of the most famous in his field. He is known for his exclusively black and white film fashion photography and the one of a kind candid moody shots he achieves. Meisel states he has been influenced by countless models that's he has shot and caters shoots to the specific look of a model. This is what i hope to achieve with my model Faith.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These shots are clearly planned but they look more candid and fit the dark feminine aesthetic that I'm going for more than the more energetic poses and smiles i had going in the the majority of the previous shoot.

Research - Helmut Newton
Helmut Newton is though to be one of the great photographers of the 20th century and is a household name in photography. he is described as a "prolific, widely imitated fashion photographer whose provocative, erotically charged black-and-white photos were a mainstay of Vogue and other publications” by The New York Times. I'm researching his work as i love the timeless, playful one of a kind images he created that a re widely imitated by countless photographers and artists today.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Technique
I like the way he uses spaces and setting to frame the model. I like the use of different techniques and tones throughout the image to create depth and interest for the viewer. For shoot 4 i intend to make my model seem less like they want o please the camera and act more natural and at home with their own moody vibe.

Research - Glen Luchford
Glen Luchford is a self taught British photographer from Brighton, he now lives in California. he was one of the first photographers to collaborate with Kate Moss. I like his images of Kate Moss that use natural sunlight to create a candid feel. His work has featured for magazines like Harpers Bazaar and British, French, American and Italian Vogue. I really like his laid back approach to photographs, Nothing looks too set up and its a very in the moment photograph that has a story telling, cinematic feel to it..
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Techniques
like the way he used close up angles to get a proper connection with the model. This is a technique i planned to use when i shoot in the car as ill need to be close and personal with the model using daylight as well to create a natural relaxed feel. The technique i used after researching glen Luchford's work. Luchfords lighting is somewhat influenced by cinema. he loves cinematic lighting on location and also in studio and wants the viewer to be transported to a movie scene etc. To get a natural feel to my images I’m not using flash on location but continuous lighting and reflectors. I don't mind if the outside of the car is bright either as it adds to the authenticity of the look like in the last picture of Kate Moss here.

Final Seletions for prints and why
So I need between 10-20 final images for this project, 5 of which are to be printed. My first objective is to find at least 10 finals and then decide what 5 best represent the project as a while and work together as a set of 5 to print.
Tumblr media
I chose this image as I like the facial expression as its effortless and simple. I like the use of the mirror to create a reflection to add interest to the image. I think its fits my brief and I've kept it in black and white to add a classy timeless dark feminine feel to it.
Tumblr media
For this image i really like the expression on the model, Its distant and thought provoking, I like the way it could be used a s a double spread page, I've kept this in colour as the tones are  ice and the colouring isn't too much anyways.
Tumblr media
I chose this image as i would like a detail for the selection as its targeted for a magazine so a detail of some fashion would be great. I like the way the light falls on the legs and the sculpted aspect to it.
Tumblr media
I chose this image as its a more laid back location shot, I love the expression and wanted to keep it in colour as its not got distracting colours and looks classy and tonally appealing like this.
Tumblr media
I'm also using the last image for my exhibition image, I chose to keep this in colour for the same reasons as the other ones and to add variety overall, I also think that if its for a  magazine you would want to see some of the fabrics in colours too. I like her poses leaning forward here as if she could come out of the picture.
Where I’m Printing
I got these printed at Deadly Digital Prints Glasgow as the college had contacted this business and secured a 5xA3 prints for £40 deal. The prints were finished in a  Hahnemuhle Lustre which turned out really well.

Shoot 4 - Review and Feedback
After feedback from my previous studio shoot my plan for this shoot was to make it moodier and more canid to match the feel in the other location shots. Here's a selection of the shots types I took.
Tumblr media
I got loads of variety in this shoot, The feedback was much better and i can see lots of potential finals here.
Tumblr media
However from now onwards i think i will be editing in college as my edits aren't saving after I've tried to fix my computer, here are my favourites so far that ive managed to edit

Shoot 3 - Review and feedback
This was my first studio shoot with model Winter. id say it was successful technically but I'm not sure if the shots will match the others look. Here's a variety from the shoot.
Tumblr media
Below are my favourite shots
Tumblr media
i really like the simple composition here and the contrast of black again the off white background, i want to make a shaped with the jacket so layed it out like that on the ground which i think worked well.
Tumblr media
I love the textures here and the delicacy of the models face and expression in the fluffy hood
Tumblr media
I like the playful aspect and the composition here
Tumblr media
i like this as its almost abstract and strange as her face is dead on and her body is sideways.
Tumblr media
I like this as its simple and effective and works well as a detail.
Tumblr media
So the feedback for these shots was different. If it was a stand alone shoot they would be fine but my lecturer and I feel they don't really match the other shoots, in a sense that they feel too constructed. I can use the shots of the shoes and any moodier ones but my plan for my next studio shot is to create a much more moodier and candid feel to match the other location shoots. I personally like the final image shown here its set up but in a way matches the vibe of the shoot still and i think would pair nicely with some of my previous shots.
Tumblr media
here's an example of one that really doesn't fit my brief as she is so happy and its too playful. I used the pose in that final image and it worked well but just the facial expression mean that i couldn't use a lot of this shoots images as they weren't moody enough.
