I think the final outcome for this project my zine, documenting the history of the Bloxwich showman location worked well. I think the most successful part was the 3D cut out elements within the zine itself, I think without developing this cutout idea the zine would have become too flat and I would have struggled with implement layering within the zine. If given more time to work on this project I would have liked to experiment with the layering of acetate and tracing paper within the actual zine, to give the zine more of a textured feel. However I do like the effect the cuts outs give as they allow the audience to see through the new building, to see the image of the old building. Allowing the audience to explore the history of the building as they go through the zine.
I am happy with the over all effect of the printed out zine, I think the simple binding works well, and the outcome is neat and well put together. If given more time I would have liked to explore adding texture to the actual paper of the zine, however realistically I don’t see how I could implement this texture without damaging other pages of the zine. One area I would like to expand on is the back of the images within the zine, would these images have looked better with a black back, and hidden cut outs? This is something I want to work on in my third year.
In terms of this project in general I'm happy with the progression of my outcomes, I felt during the early parts of this project I was stuck in my comfort zone of monotones and photography. This said I'm really happy I broke out of that by adding drawings into my work and experimenting with colour. As soon as I broke out of that comfort zone I found the outcomes I was creating were a lot more successful than the outcomes at the beginning of this project. I think the skills I have improved most within this project are my digital skills, during digital workshop at university. Along with my compositional skills when piecing my zine together.
Work Experience- CREATIVE Volunteer at Birmingham B’side Festival
Today I worked as a Creative volunteer at Birmingham Hippodrome, to gain experience for a future career in teaching young people. The festival involved working with young children in workshops and shows.
I have been playing around with my imagery and creating compositions. To show the compositions being created and the layers being made I have created an animation to show the process.
I have over laid my drawings over found pieces of imagery and text that is related to the history of my location. I have added in these found images and text to show a contrast between the past and present of the building and show how it has evolved. When all these different stages imagery come together in a zine, it will show a progression of how the building has changed over time.
I’ve found that by taking my cut out images and signing a light through them to create shadows on a wall. I think this is a really interesting outcome that I would like to explore more in the future.
I then used Photoshop to edit out my hand so the main focus was on the image.
I have been cutting into my current print outs and riso graph work to create more layers within my work. I can on creating my zine by layering these cut out pieces of work to the slowly reveal with history of the building.
Alongside this project I have participated in a digital workshop. During this workshop I have developed and learnt the following skills on Adobe Photoshop: Creating brushes, creating stamps, blending modes and making selections.
Using a Light box I have began to combine my layers and take photos each time I move my layers around. I really like this way of working is it is extremely easy to change up and alter each of my pieces. I think it also has a lot of potential for animation and further experimentation in my final year of University. I also think my image making has become a lot more successful now I have added colour into this project.
