Let us go back memory lane. Are you ready?

Do you know the book 'African Child' written by Camara Laye?

It was one of the books in the African Writers Series.

We are very sure you know the book. You may have read it in secondary school.

You may not have known that the book was originally written in French as an autobiographical novel with the title, L'Enfant noir (The Dark Child in English) and published in New York by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

The interesting part is that as at when we read the book, we never knew that it was first written in French even though we knew that the author, Camara Laye was Guinean and the official language of Guinea is French.

As Anglophone citizens, we read and digested the book in English. We were unaware of the fact that some day we will be reading, writing, speaking and translating from French to other languages and vice versa.

We had to give this backstory through memory lane because today, 23rd April, 2024 is World Book and Copyright Day and the theme for 2024 is “Reading Our Way”.

We wouldn’t have read our way into Camara Laye’s book without #translators and #publishers who translated the book from French to English.

Offering translation and other language services, École de Langue Française d'Afrique salutes the efforts and industry of:

1. James Kirkup, and

2. Ernest Jones .

They translated Camara Laye’s book from French to English and published it in the United States by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1954 as The Dark Child. In the United Kingdom, this translation was published under the title The African Child in 1959.

Like James Kirkup and Ernest Jones, École de Langue Française d'Afrique is here to make reading and learning in other languages worthwhile for you.

We join all book lovers around the world in general and the translators of the African Child, in particular, and in this appreciation post to mark 2024 World Book and Copyright Day.

If you are #Nigerian, #Somalian, #Zambian or any other #African, remember that there are fellow Africans whose skulls are still buried in this land whose great great grand children now live in foreign lands. What I am trying to say is, doesnt matter where you are born, we bòunded together in a deeply spiritual way through this land we call Africa and no one whatsoever is more African than the other.

A Nigerian is more Nigerian than mysèlf, a Malawian is more Malawian than me, a Congolese is more Congolese than me, but none of these people are more African than me and that's how we should relate to each other, different nationalities, same people. A Ghanaian is likely to have similar DNA with Jamaican who has never been to Africa than the DNA between the same #Ghanaian to a #Rwandese. A Nigerian is likely to have same DNA with Afro Brazilian than the same Nigerian to a #Zimbabwean. So if a Nigerian see me as closer to him than his fellow Yorubas who were fòrced into slàvery in Brazil, he's just playing himself. Me and you are both Africans who are born and raised here, but you would find that you have matching genetics with someone in #Cuba or #Brazil than you would with me. If you look at it that way, it shows you how deeply we are connected and are one.

So lets stop divisiòn and lets stòp acting like there is hierarchy on Africàness because there is none, there are just displaced Africans and africans left behind and in some cases trying to displace themselves. We are all connected... we are one.

The theme for Zero Discrimination Day 2024 is “To protect everyone's health, protect everyone's rights."

“Through upholding rights for all, we will be able to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, and to secure a safer, fairer, kinder, and happier world – for everyone," said Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of @unaids.

UNAIDS likewise said, "1 March this year is the tenth anniversary of Zero Discrimination Day. Upholding everyone's rights is the responsibility of us all. Everyone can play a part in ending discrimination. On 1 March, and across the whole month of March, events, activities and messages will remind the world of this vital lesson and call to action: to protect everyone's health, protect everyone's right."

Hence, on Zero Discrimination Day this year, UNAIDS is challenging the discrimination faced by women and girls in all their diversity in order to raise awareness and mobilize action to promote equality and empowerment for women and girls.

In similar vein, our work at École de Langue Française d'Afrique @elfdafrique is relevant to Zero Discrimination Day because it promotes linguistic diversity and inclusivity, fostering understanding and respect for both foreign and indigenous African languages and cultures. What is TCF Language Test?

TCF – Test de Connaissance du Français Canada is a French language proficiency test which is accepted by the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as one of the standard tests for immigration.

Individuals who want to apply for economic immigration or for citizenship status in Canada can give this test. Individuals from any language of origin or nationality including French and people from French-speaking countries are eligible to give this French test for Canada immigration.

The objective of TCF Canada is to assess the French skills of the applicant on a scale of six levels. This scale corresponds to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, and Assessment (CEFR). CEFR is coherent, transparent and comprehensive, assessing your proficiency in French.

An applicant can appear in this French test for Canada immigration multiple times, but with a minimum gap of 30 days between two sessions. The official certificate of results is available within 4-8 weeks after the test and shows the score for each module.

The candidate must contact the TCF Canada Center to inquire about test session dates. The TCF center guides the applicant about the location of the test session, registration procedures and fees.

It is quite convenient to give TCF as it is also electronically conducted (eTCF). There’s no other test or prior qualification required for the exam, and the candidate must be at least 16 years old to be eligible.

What is TEF Language Test?

Test d’Evaluation de Français (TEF) is one of the international benchmark tests that evaluate proficiency and knowledge of the French language.

TEF has been used as a French language test for immigration to Canada for a long time already. Some educational institutions in Canada accept TEF results from international students as proof of language skills.

TEF test sessions are held around the year in various testing centers. These centers are responsible for the session dates as well as providing the candidates with registration period and fee structure. The registration deadlines are at least a week before the date of the test. It is best to apply and register early so that there’s enough time for all the paperwork to be processed within the given time.

You don’t need any prior qualifications or degrees to appear in a TEF test. You must, however, be at least 16 years of age or above to apply. For registration, you’ll need to present the following documents:

• Photocopy of your official ID card (including passport, driver’s license, and other such documents;

• A recent photograph along with the signature;

• In case that your testing center doesn’t take your photograph on the test date, you will also be required to present a form of photo identification;

• Personal information form that you fill out at the time of registration.
