Woah, I must have missed something, why are people jumping down your throat?
From what I can gather at this point, it seems like they feel like anyone who likes Anne Rice herself and the books better than the show=automatically racist. Even if they ALSO enjoy the show and support the race change of the characters and all the racial conversation the show incorporated into its adaptation.
Personally, I think it does a disservice to the fandom to assume that the only reason one could like the books over the show is because of racist reasons. Anne's books speak to so many people in so many ways, especially those who have ever felt like outcasts or apart from mainstream society, and many fans have extremely personal connections to the books for a huge variety of reasons.
Like I said in my videos, I was excited and intrigued to see this AU version of the story (I love AUs!) but my complaints with the writing of the episodes mostly came back to when the show was trying to stick TOO MUCH to the books.... Because the show was really making its own thing with its own versions of the characters and all these new ideas, but then suddenly it would shove in a scene/dialogue straight out of the books which would contradict or make no sense with everything else the show had already worked to set up with the new direction it was taking itself.
Critiquing sloppy/weak writing does not mean I or any other fan who feels the same is doing it for racist reasons. Much of my criticism was about how the scripts changed Lestat's character to make him so much worse than he was in the books (which would be fine, it's their story, whatever--except the show runners told us over and over again that the whole reason Louis was doing a second interview was so that this time we could see the real version of Lestat and how Louis felt about him instead of the mean, insulting version he gave in the first interview). There was a lot promised by the showrunners about what their adaptation would be like that was not delivered ("closer to the books than the 1994 movie," "true to the spirit of Anne Rice" etc). The entire reason I made my videos was to evaluate how well the show measured up to those promises.
Worse than making Lestat so irredeemable, the way the first season ended in a way that made so many fans believe that Louis might have been lying about everything didn't sit well with me at all--it's a harmful stereotype to make the black man a liar, especially when it comes to abuse. I know the "the DV didn't actually happen and black Louis was lying or mind controlled by his evil non-white boyfriend" became a running fan theory, but I personally don't believe it one bit. But I can see why so many fans do--again, sloppy/weak writing on the show's part.
Like I said in my video, the only thing Louis actually lied about in ep7 (and he was lying to himself, not deliberately lying to Daniel) was the depth of his love for Lestat at the end. And that's entirely canon for Louis to deceive himself about--admitting how much he truly loves Lestat always came hard for him. I personally don't think it's going to turn out that anything Louis told us in season 1 was a lie. I think the show would have revealed that at the end of the season, not waited another season (or two or three) to reveal that. And the theme of season 2's promotional material has all been about memory, not honesty. I don't think Louis could mistakenly remember getting dropped from a mile in the sky and the months/years of recovery afterward, so I personally think all those memories were real.
The first three episodes of season 1 made Louis's struggle with race its primary focus, and the series description began with how Louis was chafing at society as a black man. But then from episode 4 on, the focus of the show shifted entirely. Obviously racism still existed in Louis's world, but the show pushed it all entirely to the background with little things, like segregation on the bus, and we saw the characters quietly taking in stride, not making any plot out of it. Suddenly all of Louis's character-driving moments weren't about that anymore and we were in a whole new story, when his battle against racism had been the entire theme of the first three episodes. This was something I noticed and pointed out in my videos--I didn't say it was a bad thing (after all, seeing people be racist to Louis on screen, while "realistic," isn't exactly fun for anyone, and we'd already seen plenty), but I did think the sudden dramatic shift in story focus weakened the show's themes and throughline.
Again this comes down to writing, and the premise/script was written by white people. I think they could have done much better with much more non-white involvement on the writing level. I think the show could have been stronger with some more care taken to create consistency and smoother transitions between episodes (like when they take Claudia out to feed in episode 4, suddenly all the race riots are gone, when everything was on fire 2 hours ago). It's common for shows to have each episode written by a different person, even though they all collaborate in a writer's room, but to me it felt like the show lacked efficient script supervision to make sure all the scripts flowed into each other without any contradictions or inconsistency.
When I talked about these things in my videos, when I said I would have liked the show to do better with the way it missed the mark sometimes in handling racial aspects (even though other parts I commended as being great), and the way I critiqued the inconsistencies and contradictions, some people took that to mean I hated the show entirely. The point of my videos was to see how well the show measured up to Rolin Jones's promises that it was so faithful and respectful to the spirit of the books and that all he wanted to do was honor Anne's work. I know the books back and forth, enjoy having a ND hyperfixation that gives me near-encyclopedic knowledge of the texts and Anne as an author. So people ask me questions about them all the time, especially in comparison to the adaptations. Who better to make videos evaluating how well the show measured up to RJ's promises and claims of faithfulness? But some people took me comparing the show to the books to mean I thought it was a bad thing that they weren't the same, and I hated the show entirely for not being the same as Anne wrote it, and therefore that meant I (and anyone else who loves the books) was racist 🤷

Hi Elisa! I’ve actually been watching your content for more than a decade, and while I want to congratulate you on your invite to the iwtv premiere, I do think there is some truth to what some of your detractors have said, and a discrepancy on AMC’s part by not inviting any black/POC Content Creators, or sending them screeners. While that may not be your fault or responsibility, the fandom would ask if it would be possible for you to use your platform to bolster their channels, or pass along word from the fandom to AMC that we would like to see more effort and consideration given to black/poc Content Creators who have helped promote this show from the start, as well as reflect its diverse audience, who tuned into a show particularly telling a black narrative about a black lead. Three CC’s that I can name in particular are:
https://youtube.com/@blackgirltalkfangs?si=oyOnMB4sRhJwonb9
https://youtube.com/@KawaiiBri?si=9Eg0g3eM3Geple6D
https://youtube.com/@BlackGayComicGeek?si=xVpvHPVnfJAV5r3V
Thank you for your support and consideration.
Absolutely!!
And @blackgirltalkfangs actually tagged me on Twitter last night with a list of her own of black YouTubers who have made IWTV content, so check out (and share!) her links too: https://x.com/BlkGrlTalkFangs/status/1762526267520270720
I don't have any contacts at AMC or anything, but I do have many twitter/tumblr followers who can see what I share, and am always happy to signal boost!
Do you know if any of these creators have specifically expressed interest in being invited? The event is for 21+ US citizens only, and there's no travel or accommodations provided, just tickets to the event, so they will have to be able to get there themselves. If they're able to do all that, then we can campaign!
For the record, I only have seen three other people say they got invites, but hundreds of people were invited, so here's hoping AMC has already done the right thing and actually did invite plenty of diverse content creators, and we just don't know who they are yet 🤞

I hope for your own sanity that you've reported that user for harassment at this point because God damn, they seem to have a stick up their ass about you. (Else they have had one about someone else that went Nebula only and saw this as something easy to target instead.)
🤷 who can possibly know where they get it from? But nah, I’m not going to report anyone. They seem to be having a hard enough day as it is. If it was in my power to help them have a happy fandom experience, I would do what I could, but they seem determined to believe the worst about me no matter what I offer to try

I do know plenty of other non-white YouTubers, but none of them have any interest in attending this event other than the one I have already invited to come with me. If you know of any who want to go, send them my way, and I'll do everything I can to get them to AMC's attention!

😱😱😱 What could it mean??? Everyone's assuming it has to do with the Premiere next week in NYC, because they also announced the winner of the contest today (that person got emailed, not DMed through Twitter like this). But I didn't even enter that contest! I didn't think I'd be able to swing a trip on such short notice. But if that's what it is omg I'm buying a plane ticket immediately!
My guess is they reached out to fans who follow their twitter account. Maybe just ones with larger followings of their own? I know of two other people who got the same DM. But were there more?? Did anyone else get this message??
I'm definitely not holding my breath that it's an invite to the NY premiere, but you better believe I'll be refreshing my inbox constantly until I get their email and find out what this is actually all about 🤩
They emailed me last year, asking about using clips from my videos on Season 1 in their binge watching campaign. I signed a contract, but never heard anything about that after. The other two people I know of who got the message are also content creators, so maybe it's something similar??

I don't know what benefit it is to you to lie about blocking me? It's okay, really. I'm not mad at you for blocking me for a couple days and then undoing it, and I totally get why you would want to. We don't know each other and have never crossed paths in this fandom before. I have no right to your space or to see what you post on your blog, even if it's about me. It's perfectly fine if you wanted to do that for a little while, or even forever if you like. Being blocked did not prevent me in anyway whatsoever from replying to you, as I reblogged this post yesterday morning to explain why you (and others) were mistaken about the difference between the event tickets that were sent as invites vs those that were reserved for the fan contest. The only thing the block prevented me from doing was seeing the other posts about me that you made since then, which, again, are your right to keep from me if you want to. I never would have even known about them if someone hadn't sent me screencaps of one of them this morning, and when I went to go look for myself, I was blocked, the same as I had been yesterday. So, again, in order to respond to you (and others), I reblogged this post once more with what I said above--the block did not prevent me from responding at all.
Now that I can see your blog, I see you've written a letter to send to AMC, critiquing them for only inviting white press/influencers to the event. They've invited hundreds of people to this event, but I only know of three others besides me. The four of us are white, but how do you know the hundreds of others are also only white? If that's truly the case, AMC absolutely deserves to be taken to task for that. But how do you know? Are there black or brown youtubers you know who have said they wish they'd been invited? Tell me who they are and I'll email AMC myself to ask them to invite those people as well. I want to use my platform to uplift others just as much as you say you wish I did. Let me help you!

Oh, good, you unblocked me, so I can finally actually see your blog now!
It's not your job or that of any other person of color to teach or help me, but since you ask me to listen to criticism, I would like to learn if you are willing to explain. I combed through the comment sections on my YT videos vigilantly to delete and ban any racist behavior I could catch. If I missed something, please let me know so that I can go delete it now. I also made a point of leaving up every single critical comment against me made by poc, so that none of their voices would be silenced. My channel is absolutely not a safe space for racism or bigotry of any kind.
One of the things I often delete is people calling me "the real racist against white people" for daring to point out that racism exists and to discuss it in detail in my videos. Not just the IWTV ones, but all my other videos about non-white vampire properties. They prefer to just close their eyes and imagine the world is all progressive now and racism isn't an issue anymore so therefore we shouldn't make them uncomfortable by discussing it. I will not tolerate this. We will discuss it.
Season 1 of the show delved into a lot of complex topics about racism and history, and gave us tons of rich material to discuss. Much of it was wonderful, but there were some ways that I think the white writers and directors of the episodes handled race subjects poorly, and I critiqued them for it. I am not afraid to ask the show to do (even) better when it is addressing race, and the same goes for the way it handles sexuality and women's issues. Not just in regard to the content of the show, but also the way the showrunners talked about it in interviews, panels, and behind the scenes.
It's an amazing thing that we have a show like this now when a decade ago, it never would have been made in racist white America. But that doesn't mean it's perfect. It's a hugely important stepping stone to getting TV and Hollywood to where it needs to be (especially for vampires!), but Season 1 was not fully there. Hopefully, this show will run for years and have many opportunities to keep improving to get it right. And hopefully its success will provide the foundation for more shows about queer POC to actually be MADE by queer POC instead of people like the cishet white men who came up with the premise and outline of this show, and indeed got some things wrong, despite how progressive their intentions might have been.

It seems some people are still confused 🙄
The April 30 IWTV Premiere event is an invite-only event. The people AMC invites to events like these are journalists, reporters, content creators, influencers, anyone who they think could promote the show and spread news about it--something I've been committed to using my long-established vampire-focused platform to do ever since it was first announced.
The contest was a wonderful opportunity to offer 8 fans a chance to win tickets to this invite-only event. Those 8 fans were chosen at random, and the lucky winners get to attend despite not being influencers/content creators. I didn't enter the contest because I wanted to leave those 8 chances to the fans who deserve them.
I DID get invited along with all the other regular people who got invited, which came as a surprise to me, because I'm not a NY local anymore. A very pleasant surprise! And even though I no longer live there, I am going to invest hundreds of dollars to be able to attend. But the surprise wasn't a shock. AMC likes my videos, despite how I both praise and critique the show in many ways. Reviewers can be critical, and networks don't ever expect all reviews and analyses to be 100% glowing all the time. I talked about far more positive and exciting things about the show than negative, but some people only wanted to hear the negative and assume I hate the show, despite how obviously obsessed with it I am. AMC clearly doesn't mind any critical opinions I have of the show, as they emailed me long ago to praise my videos and ask to use clips from them in one of their promotional campaigns.
The friend/colleague I'm bringing as my plus1 to the event loves the show, and we are both so excited to experience it! I've seen it going around on twitter that there are actual show-haters who have "infiltrated" the event and plan to start shit. If I encounter any of them, I will shut them down to the best of my ability. This event is a celebration for this season I've been eagerly awaiting for a year and a half, and I am honored to be invited to it.
As a content creator, I will discuss the event in my videos, perhaps even be able to share footage or photos, and you can look forward to looking to me for more detailed and insightful information about it than you would be able to get from non-content-creator-fans OR from non-fan-content-creators. This show has a lot of hot button issues and sensitive topics associated with it that merit much discussion--both for how well the show does in handling them and in the areas where I think it falls short. I have zero tolerance for hate speech, racism, homophobia, or bigotry of any kind, and just like I always do, I will delete report and ban any of it that appears in my YouTube comments or in any of my other spaces.
I am one of you, and I am here for you ❤️ I have spent decades studying the vampire chronicles and Anne Rice in general in order to become an expert on her work, and all I ever want is to share my knowledge and passion for it with those who are interested in hearing about it.

Whoa there, partner. There was no complaining going on in the conversation I shared. You're projecting. I was just excitedly trying to predict things about the show. Before the part you see, my friends and I were talking about how the show changed Antoine to a woman, and how maybe the show was doing it as a way to try to get more audience/money by giving the audience what they want with more progressive TV! Yay! A good thing! We already assumed the show was committed to doing this with the way they were giving us black main character vampires for once on TV! And we were thinking of other ways they could have gotten more women into the show, to again, attract more audience that want more roles for women in stories that are so dude-heavy like Anne's were.
Making Louis's assistant a woman instead would have been one way to get another role for a woman on the show. At the time, all we knew about Rashid was that he worked for Louis, NOT anything about them being a couple. Of course the fans immediately wondered if they were going to turn out to be secretly a couple, so we glibly called him his boyfriend. But there was no actual indication of that, other than that the casting announcement said he was there in the background of Louis's home with him. Like even in the show, Daniel assumes Rashid is just an assistant, until he gets to the point where he patronizingly asks if he's sleeping with Louis. How would Louis having a female assistant be a bad thing?? It would have made more screen time for women in the show! Also we didn't know at the time that the show was changing Louis from being bi to being gay. So if the assistant did turn out to secretly be involved with Louis, seeing bi representation on screen would have also been another good progressive thing the show might have tried to do. More varieties of queer representation! Yay! A good thing!
But again, not complaining/mad, just discussing ideas, because I was so excited to see all the new things the show was going to do with the story.
Clearly I know NOW why the show didn't make his assistant a woman as their possible way to try to be more forward thinking and progressive. And considering it was the very reason I predicted 20 minutes later in the convo, I was pleased as punch to be right! Like my other friend said in the convo, if the assistant DID turn out to be a lover, it would be very ooc for it to be anyone other than Lestat or Armand. So making it Armand means show kept it in character for them, and as seen in my videos, I was super excited that Louis wasn't just given a random OC love interest.
The 37 age was what came up when you googled Assad back then, and the only age that came up at all. We all learned that it was wrong later when more information about him was put online. Before anyone knew he would be Armand, though, we all knew Armand would be coming for Season 2 and they'd announce his actor soon. So of course, there was tons of discourse going around back then about how the show would handle Armand's age, but none of our conversation had to do with race. As my other friend in the convo immediately reacts to the picture, Assad looks good! Aside from being much older than the character in the book, he is extremely Armandy with those huge soulful eyes and curly fluffy hair.
My prediction was that the show would age up Armand into his 20s, because it seemed like the common sense thing to do for the sake of optics. Pointing that out and discussing it doesn't mean complaining about it. I never said I thought the show should keep Armand a teenager, I said I absolutely understood why they wouldn't. Just like they did with the 1994 movie, aging him up is the best way to go for TV. It doesn't matter at all whether the actor was 32 or 37, because his age stated in the show is "in your 20s," and that's the only age that matters, and aligned perfectly with what I thought would be the best thing to do.
But again, we didn't know that at the time! The show changed Louis and Lestat's ages to 33/34 to align with the actors' ages. So at the time, we considered that they might say Rashid/Armand was the same age as his actor as well. But as we found out later, no, the character is only in his 20s. And I think that's the perfect balance between him being younger than Louis in body/mind but still old enough to avoid all the problems that would come with making him 17 like the book, and I'm glad the show had the exact same idea for him that I did.
I can't wait for you all to see season 2! I can't say anything about it yet, but the trailers have already shown so much more of those soulful eyes and so many other extremely Armandy moments! I never much liked Antonio Banderas as Armand. A lot of people say that even though he's aged up and looks so different, he still captured the essence of Armand, but eh, I never really agreed with that. Assad, on the other hand, GETS IT.

!! The speculations were true!! Just got the email, and it's a press invite for the Premiere event! I am STOKED!!
It's so cool that they offered the chance to 8 fans to win tickets to this event, when usually these things are primarily for journalists, press, reporters, influences, and content creators as a way for the network to get publicity and promotion. I didn't enter the contest, because it felt unfair and that I should leave those chances to win to the fans who don't have access in other ways to the show like I do.
But as someone who has a foot on both sides of that line, I can't wait to meet the other 8 fans who will be there! I'll be bringing the fabulous Princess Weekes with me, who you may also know from her Vampire (and other) content on YouTube 🥰 If you're there and you see us, please say hi!

the funniest thing about lestat is he was secretly a member of the gentry!! woaaah!! plot twist!!! except it doesn't really matter at all. they had no money. it doesn't define his perception of himself. it was nothing but a stricture and eventually he left and even that mattered in no material terms to anyone. to the extent he returns to auvergne in like 200 years the vibes are rancid as hell and it has no continuity. it never actually mattered. if it's a lie and he was the groundskeeper it's the same. his existence shed everything human. he's playing with the shadows in the cave
