Crown of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, known as the Crown of the Andes Date: Ca. 1160 (diadem) and ca. 1170 (arches) Geography: made in Columbia Culture: Columbian;Popayán Medium: Gold, repoussé, and chased; emeralds Classification: gold This item caught my eye not only because it is beautiful, but because it seems to have its own personality. It is sophisticated, wise, sarcastic, a little haughty, and a little Mischievous. I was looking through the collections thinking “hmmm which one of these looks like a survivor?” and I came across this one and instantly knew I had found it. If something ever happened to the met, this sucker would survive without a scratch and then laugh at the other relics for being weenies. In my mind it’s basically the Betty White of artifacts.
