6 years ago, @the_papa_les interviewed me for a "Day Jobs" feature in @skateslate. I anticipated a small feature tucked within the print mag. Lo and behold, my good friend @maxdubler (a phenomenal photographer & industry mainstay) surprised me with this cover. It was a surreal moment and an honor for which I'm still incredibly grateful. There are lots of elements to the photo - some obvious, like the @midsvan #M4L & @pushculture patches, #MidsLids helmet and OG Midsboy @eastcoastmac chasing me down in his vintage M5; some subtle, like the left sleeve of my leathers bulging from my wrist brace and KT tape, with a G-Form padded slide puck backer / extender. (I had purchased a Push Culture Season Pass and raced all year with a broken scaphoid, before finally getting surgery). In terms of @emgeeevents context, I was only hosting 2 events, neither of which were IDF-sanctioned: #CentralMass6, the biggest-ever @centralmassskatefestival with $5,000 prize purse and over 400 competitors; and the ill-fated #BurkeFreeride. (Good riddance to Ary Quiros Jr. & Sr.; they’re finally facing prison time btw.) Soon after, I would take the reins of both #KillingtonWC and #GravityFest, building out a 3-event series and season pass product of my own. Thanks to Marc Dean and Neil “DrNo” Orta for entrusting me to carry the torch and build upon their organizing efforts. Fortunately, what the photo *doesn't* show is that I had missed the apex and taken a sub-optimal outside line, while filming with longtime @orangatangwheels teammate @colinmartian. With the longboard industry going through a pretty serious resurgence, it’s fun to reminisce on the years past and think about where things will go from here. I’m happy to remain entrenched in the industry after all these years, through all its ups and downs. I remain true to the closing words in my interview: “My experience is local shops are the backbone of skating… behind each shop is an owner who spends hard-earned money to invest in brands, support the scene and hopefully break even. People run shops because they love skateboarding and their community. One year ago on August 1st, @bonuslife and I moved to Portland. Kyle dubbed it “Portland Day.” Her dad and siblings all came to Boston to give us critical help making the big move, loading our lives and my business into a big truck that barely squeezed down our narrow Charlestown street. 3 months later, we closed on our first home and rental property together. Thank you to everyone who has visited, helped, and made us feel so welcome in Maine! Oh Captain, our Captain. What a week - @bonuslife and I lost our sweet boy Captain on the last day of the Manchester show. Kyle and her family had him since she was in high school. He lived a love-filled end of life here with us in Portland, was surrounded with support through the end. He has been laid to rest in our yard so we can still visit him and his catnip plant and pour one out. We miss you buddy, so so much 😢😖🐈 I sent Kyle the 10th photo saying bye to Cappy on my way out the door to the show, oblivious to the fact that it would be our final goodbye. Tomorrow I head into surgery to repair my Achilles’ tendon, which I tore Tuesday on the ultimate field. Very grateful to have such thoughtful and supportive friends, family, partner and neighbors through both of these processes. The positives - Thankfully this injury came in summer, not winter, and landed after the big trade show. Health insurance softens the blow. Many aren’t so lucky to have medical coverage, a sad yet politically-motivated aberration for this “first world” nation. I’ll be much more sedentary than I’d like for the next 6 months, but I scored a sweet second-hand knee scooter to cruise on 😎 and @ty_top is shipping up his sweet cold therapy machine. Vacationland is an ideal place to convalesce, and now that the Girard family is all fully vaccinated, they were able to make their first trip up to visit over Father’s Day. It could be much worse. We liked out Portland apartment so much we decided to create an LLC and buy the damn building! I’m so thankful to have @bonuslife as not only a life partner but also a business partner 🥰 It’s been an intense few months since our offer was accepted, with an especially hectic 3 days since closing: Turning around a newly-vacant unit with full paint-out and beautiful custom cabinetry by @cody_volger for a new tenant’s 11/1 move-in. We grinded it out with a strong team effort and extra boost over the finish line with @thebonus1. I am so grateful. Extra thankful to also be able to vote in the State of Maine! We’ll see how much more action lies in the days ahead. It’s hard to believe that you’re gone, Dan. From Cenmass to Burke, Board Meeting to Giants Head, Soldiers to Ithaca, you constantly brought a spark, keen intellect and joyful enthusiasm everywhere. Your fighting spirit and entrepreneurship burned until your last breath with your artful @idoverego project and incisive, wrenching-yet-inspiring writing. As a skate family, we are fortunate to have such great memories to cherish, and grateful that you kept us abreast of your brutal 2.5-year battle with cancer. I hope you’ve found peace and rest with an end to your suffering. Your impact, stories and style survive beyond today’s burial, which brought a long battle to a tearful end. Dan said he was the “luckiest unlucky guy,” an always found beauty and humor in otherwise unfortunate circumstances; it seems fitting that my last DMs with Dan were this May when I helped him cancel his pesky recurring IDF payment, after he reached out to wish happy birthday from his hospital bed.
