"Oh, here we go again"
i want to focus today on our chairman repeating her old destructive behaviours, because this song is exploring this theme from the very first line quoted above. she knows how it'll end because she's already seen it!
"There was a litany of reasons why / we could've played for keeps this time / I know I'm just repeating myself"
she's telling herself "this time it'll work" but she's at the same time aware she's just repeating herself - repeating in the sense of starting a new relationship that's so similar to the previous one (emotion-wise), of repeating her old patterns ("i can fix him"), of getting into relationship with a man she was with years ago.
the use of "litany" isn't accidental. in catholic church litanies are full of repetitions (this is probably the most known litany where i live and it has many repetitions of "pray for us"; "save us" and "have mercy on us" are also common repetitions). litanies are also used mainly to ask/beg for help (ekhm, the prophecy)
"Put me back on my shelf / but first, pull the string / and I'll tell you that he runs / because he loves me"
this is also in the theme of repeating stuff over and over again - just like a doll with a string, unable to act in any new ways, always repeating the same patterns, the same words ("he loves me")
"Just say when, I'd play again"
and even though she knows it's not working, she knows she'll fall into this pattern again, because it's the only thing she knows

Idk how to describe this but How Did It End makes me sad in a way I didn’t think a breakup song could make me sad. It gives me that heavy griefy feeling that’s usually reserved for songs about literal mourning

i normally don’t post about stuff like this, but i highly recommend listening to one columbia’s college radio stations right now— they’re holding a round table of student reporters talking about the encampment in hamilton hall, atm they’re talking about the diversionary tactics student protesters used (moving encampments around campus, holding picket lines) in order get access to hamilton hall without drawing suspicion

Hannah Montana is fucked up because its entire POINT as a show is that children should be protected from fame and exploitation, but it stars a REAL little girl that's being exploited. Nearly every episode carries the looming threat of Miley being outed as Hannah and losing her peaceful teenage life to the ravages of fame. Her father in the show (played by her own father in real life) wisely protected her from the trauma of fame by making her wear a disguise and live a rather quiet, interview-free life. Meanwhile the REAL Billy Ray Cyrus sold his daughter to Disney Channel when she was 11 and forced her to read dialogue about how terrible it would be to face the public eye. Like... Jesus, dude. The fictional Robby Ray is 10x the father, and it's not even close. (It's also IMMENSELY funny that her dad doesn't use his real name in the show, while she does. Almost like he wanted a bit of a disconnect between his identity and his character. Something Miley didn't get.)
