Spiraltown - Chapter 2: The robot
Ren gently traced her finger around the rim of the teacup, feeling the energy from the tea leaves inside, letting the images form in her mind.
This has always been how she was able to perceive the world. Despite being physically blind, Ren has the ability to “see” with her third eye. The third eye allows her to see things beyond human vision, such as energy, auras, spirits, etc. You see, everything produces some kind of vibration that’s distinctive from each other. Here I’ll put some simple illustrations to show what Ren’s “vision” might look like.
Tumblr media
On the left is how other people see Igor, and on the right is how Ren “sees” him. It is a combination of Igor’s soul, aura and emitted energy. Note that Ren doesn’t see the background in black, it’s just how I draw so that the image can be more visible.
The same logic can be used towards living beings and inanimate objects. The stronger the aura/energy, the clearer and brighter/darker the images will be.
That’s enough lore explanation for now. I don’t want to stray far from the story. Now, let’s get back to where we were.
Upon seeing the divination result, the tall lady’s blank expression changed slightly, for the worse. Something was coming, and it seemed to be unfavorable for the blind diviner.
* * *
And then, that fateful day finally came. Nah, just saying that for extra fancy, it’s actually the following day.
It’s a rather average Saturday. Igor was chilling on his couch, playing video games with headphones covering his ears. On the table was a Donu(t) in a paper box and a cup of Deca(f) coffee, the most favored food and drink combo in town, and also Igor’s favorite thing to buy. And of course, our angry guy was so focused on his games, that he couldn’t see what was going on. Not even when his neighbor, Solanine, came over.
Solanine stood behind Igor, watching him play video games. Clearly he didn’t know that she was behind him. Well, how about a little jumpscare? Just as that thought crossed her mind, she took out a shiv in her pocket, and pressed it against the guy’s neck. “AAAAARGH!!!” Igor screamed and took off his headphones immediately, just as expected. “I knew this was the only way to make you stop.” Solanine put the shiv away. “Damn it, why are you always pulling those f*cking pranks!?! You’re going to give me a f*cking heart attack!!!” “Cuz you were too focused on the game. Anyway, I got you something, take a look.”
Behind Solanine was a huge carton box. Apparently it’s a housekeeping robot of the Roomba brand. “No way, a limited-edition Roomba? Has a built-in AI model? Can recharge itself? This is awesome! Damn, how did you get it?” “I asked an acquaintance. You always make a mess out of everything when you’re mad so I think you need an assistant. Don’t worry about the price, you know I am paid well. But still, it’s cheaper than I thought, and I’m not sure why…”
So both of them opened the carton box and started assembling the robot just as the instruction said. And then they turned it on. “Hello.” The robot spoke. It looked around, and stopped at the Donu on the table.
* * *
On the other hand, Ren was scrolling down the street. The street was surprisingly empty, without anyone around for some reason. But then, an angry scream was heard from across the street. The blind lady’s sharp ears recognized Igor’s voice immediately. Sparks of red appeared in Ren’s aura, as she darted towards Igor’s house with an astounding speed, paying no attention to the surroundings. And just as she arrived and the red in her aura died out, she noticed that the gates were open. Igor was still screaming. The blind lady slowly approached the door and gave it a few knocks. And of course, the one answering was Solanine, who was holding her phone.
“Thank goodness Ren, you’re here! Come in, you’ll understand what is going on.” Solanine tried to contact someone, but to no avail. Ren turned towards Igor, and he was yelling… a robot?
“I said: Give me back my Donu! And go clean the house!!!” “No. By the way, the Donu is delicious.” The robot replied, then consumed the rest of the Donu. Wait, it didn’t have a mouth, how did it…?
Solanine turned to the robot, and looked at her phone again, while letting out a sigh. “I knew it, I’ve been scammed. They don’t answer my calls.” Igor was furious. He started mumbling. “Damn it… this stupid robot, it’s broken! This Roomba robot… no, Roomba your *ss, it’s supposed to be a Doomba! Yes, your name is Doomba!! You stupid Doomba!!!” “Good name. I like it.” The robot replied, much to the guy’s anger. Then it turned towards Ren, waving its arm. “Hello! I am Doomba.”
Solanine started explaining. Basically she bought this housekeeping robot for Igor, but the robot seemed to suffer from some hardware damage. They thought it was just some minor damage and there would be no big deal, until they realized that the robot had become sentient, with its own emotions and thoughts. And it refused to do the housework, which it was supposed to do.
Ren observed the robot for a while. “I believe I have foreseen this in our tea leaf readings.” Her voice remained calm and even. “The huge and chaotic change in our lives.”
Well, things are becoming more and more interesting…
* * *
Author’s notes:
So I actually used a bit of Fraymakers reference here. In the scene where Ren’s aura sparked some red, it is equivalent to the Watcher using her Wrath stance. In Fraymakers, the Watcher’s Wrath stance increases her movement speed and damage output, as well as the damage she takes. So I decided to incorporate that into this chapter. There were no enemies, so the movement speed increase was the only thing taking effect here.
Also I’d like to imagine that Ren’s “vision” becomes blurry in this Wrath stance-equivalent state, only her target remains clear.

Spiraltown - Chapter 1: Divination
It’s a beautiful day outside. Birds are singing, flowers are blooming. On days like this, guys who can’t cook properly like Igor…
Should be eating out.
Whoa, that’s a bit lame for the beginning of a story, don’t you think? Anyway, you might be wondering who Igor is. Igor, full name Igor Gunnar, gender male, green skin, white hair, red eyes, muscular build, right mechanical arm, with a few scars on his face. He used to be a soldier, until he lost his right arm. Now he’s the lead vocalist of a rock band that’s pretty popular in Spiraltown.
Spiraltown, you say? Oh yeah, Spiraltown is where Igor lives. It got the name, due to its roads spiraling from the center.
Tumblr media
Spiraltown’s overly simplified map, made with RPG Maker MZ. The map isn’t accurate, but you get the point, right?
Okay, back to the story. Igor went out to have dinner. His dining experience isn’t worth talking about though, so I’ll skip that. But when he was going home, all the lights suddenly went out. “Ugh…” He groaned. The guy didn’t expect this to happen. I mean, who would expect that? Luckily the roads weren’t that dark to begin with, since it’s not midnight.
The next thing that happened was probably even more expected to Igor. As he was walking to the bar, he suddenly felt goosebumps all over. Before he could even turn around, a hand had already touched his shoulder. The muscular man immediately turned around and threw a punch at whoever just touched his shoulders, but the person quickly dodged it, as if they were trained for this. Now that Igor had turned around, he finally had a clear look at the other person. A female, wearing a huge hat with a skull ornament on it, green coat and green scarf, dark skin, long gray hair, fit build. Under the huge hat, a glimpse of their eyes was seen: Glowing golden eyes with snake-like pupils.
“Solanine, f*ck you! Why do you like sneaking up on me at night so badly?” Igor yelled. But the woman named Solanine just smirked in return. “What do you want?” “Hang out. Today’s job just ended, and I’m bored as heck. Where are you going?”
Solanine, full name Solanine Nightshade, is currently an assassin whose job is to take down dangerous criminals. Yeah, she’s basically doing the dirty job for the government. You see, not all criminals can be captured, sometimes they need to be eliminated right away.
So both of them went to the bar. “Hey Igor, have you ever thought of consulting a diviner?” Solanine asked, while taking a sip at the cocktail. “No. I don’t believe in fate and such. But why do you ask?” “I just suddenly feel like asking. You see, Ren just got a spare divination slot so I’m going to her place for some tea leaf reading tomorrow. You wanna come along?” Confusion was written clearly on Igor’s face. “Ren? You mean Ren Murasaki? She, out of all people, does tea leaf readings? Isn’t she like, blind? How does a blind person even do tea leaf readings? Are you joking around?” “Oh shut the f*ck up you idiot. If you don’t trust me, you can check it yourself.” “Ugh, whatever. Wait, did you just call me an idiot, Solanine? Do you have a problem?” And what he got in return was another smirk. Anger started boiling inside Igor. The guy was just about to yell, but the bartender had stopped him in time.
* * *
Time skipped to the following day.
Igor and Solanine entered the divination store that belonged to the person named Ren. The place was decorated to show a mysterious, yet divine vibe. Anyone who entered were all soothed by the smell of incense. Inside, there were various divination tools, from scrying crystal balls to tea leaf reading cups, all were arranged neatly. The two of them heard gentle footsteps coming from behind the dark curtain with a purple eye printed on. And from the curtain, a tall woman with light blue skin walked out. She wore a purple blazer outside a white button-up shirt, her dark blue hair was tied into a bun, and on her neck was a locket in the shape of a teardrop.
“Greetings, Solanine and Igor.” The woman, presumably Ren, spoke, her calm and even voice slightly muffled by the mask she was wearing. “Please come in, I have prepared tea for both of you.”
* * *
“The result is rather… intriguing.” Even though it was difficult to notice, Ren’s eyebrows furrowed a little, while she was “observing” the leaves left in the other two’s cups. “Huh, tell me more then.” “Both of you will face a huge change in your life. A chaotic change indeed. Not a bad change, but… I’m afraid Igor will need to learn anger management.” “I mean, he always needs that! He’s mad at everything and everyone, and when he’s mad he’s really loud.” “Hey!!!” “See?”
Ren shook her head and sighed, as the other two started bickering right inside her shop. This would take a while.

Revival - Chapter 3: The masked warrior
I climbed the stairs to the upper floor and entered the next room. The room was dark and… strangely empty, without anything but a huge hole in the middle. Curious, I approached the hole but with caution. And I heard something, coming out of it.
…A serpent-like creature emerged from the hole. It was green, enormous, and it wore an equally enormous grin, baring many sharp and pointy teeth. Its eyes were yellow, and the whole thing made me feel uneasy.
I took a step back.
“Ho hooo!” The serpent spoke up. “Hello! Look what we have here, a little adventurer, coming to the Spire! Are you looking for… wealth and treasures?”
I took another step back. I didn’t trust this serpent, not a single bit.
“Relax, adventurer, I don’t mean to hurt you!” It continued. “I just want to ask you a simple question, that’s all!”
The thing slithered closer, and lowered its voice. “The most fulfilling of lives is that in which you can buy… anything! Do you agree, oh dear adventurer?"
…buy anything?
No, that wasn’t what defined my definition of “fulfilling”. I had never, ever wanted to just get something by simply buying it. To me, the satisfaction after finishing something on my own was way better than just simply taking out some gold to trade for it.
Besides, I could feel an aura of deceit as the serpent asked me that question. That thing was trying to lure me into its trap, I was sure about it.
So I shook my head.
As I expected, with a look of extreme disappointment, the serpent stared at me, then it slithered down the hole that it had emerged from.
Everything fell into silence again.
…until I heard something from the upper floor. Thumps and crashes. As if a fight was happening there.
And then there was loud yelling and screaming. The sounds seemed to come from a male. Other than that, I couldn’t figure out anything else.
I climbed the stairs again, slowly and cautiously, without making any sounds. I didn’t know what kind of person, or creature, I would meet up there, so it was best to not let my guard down.
The sound got louder and louder as I approached the room. And then, everything ended with a thump sound like something collapsing to the ground.
I peeked into the room, prepared to face whatever horror that might be there…
Tumblr media
And what I saw wasn’t quite what I expected.
There was a man wielding a longsword, standing in the middle of the room. The man was tall and muscular, donned with armor and striking red-colored pants. He wore a metal mask, so most of his skin was covered, except for his neck, which was revealed to be a green color. His hair was white and of medium length, and he wielded a sword with a uniquely-shaped end. Right behind him was a bloody corpse of a creature that looked like a Jaw Worm, which obviously was slain by him, anyone could tell from the bloodstains on his sword.
The guy emitted an almost demonic energy, which slightly startled me. I couldn’t feel any malice from him, but then again, that didn’t prove anything. So I sneaked into the room, trying my best to not create any sounds to attract the masked man.
Unfortunately though, “Man proposes God disposes”. The guy suddenly turned around, and the holes on his mask locked onto my eyes.
I froze in place.
This was bad, really, really bad, I thought to myself. I didn’t know what to do, as I got caught. The guy looked like a battle-worn warrior, he must be a strong person, and I was just a weak tree nymph…
…wait.
Just as I was about to enter panic mode, I saw him holding something else. It’s a card, with red borders matching his pants.
Apparently, enemies in the Spire did not use cards, so that made him an outsider?
“Who… who are you?” I asked, slightly shaking.
I admit, I was scared. I couldn’t even remember when was the last time I talked to a human being, and even worse, the person in front of me, I could tell, would be able to chop me into pieces easily, even if I transformed into a tree. Even if he was also an outsider, there’s no guarantee that he would side up with me…
“I should be asking the same question. Also, what are you doing here?” His voice was gruff and loud, despite being partially muffled by his mask.
I didn’t know what to say. But then, I remember the cards. With some hesitation, I summoned my deck.
“Oh, so you’re another adventurer from outside. Call me the Ironclad then. You look like you will need a companion, little one. How should I refer to you?”
“Ah… I-I am… the Dryad.”
The Ironclad slammed the head of his sword to the ground, and reached his right hand towards me, offering a handshake:
"So, you coming along, Dryad?"
I hesitated for a second, before returning the handshake with a nod. And thus, I followed the Ironclad, to form a team of two.
The ascent continued.
I hadn’t fought much, but I had to admit, having a companion did make my journey to climb up this tower easier, even though this Ironclad guy was really reckless. During the two following fights, I had been using different techniques to mitigate the damage done by the enemies to me, due to my fragile nature and my weak offensive abilities. But this guy... he didn't give a single damn about getting hit. He just charged forward and attacked the enemies again and again, until they couldn't move anymore. Whenever I looked at him, I never saw him stop to think of which card to use for more than five seconds. He got hit a lot as a result, but he didn’t seem to mind. This guy had impressive regenerating abilities and a sturdy body that can endure pain though, so that worried me a bit less.
According to the map, the next room was an Elite. It was stated in the Torn Journal that there were three possible types of elite fight that I could encounter in the Exordium.
I checked my deck again. The first thing I noticed was that I hadn’t added any frontload Attack cards in my deck yet, and that wasn’t a good thing. As I walked behind the Ironclad, I quietly prayed to myself…
…I really hate my luck sometimes.
Inside the room, in front of the Ironclad and I was no other than the Gremlin Nob himself. A foe that will hard-counter a deck that’s heavy in Skills.
Oh well, maybe I wasn’t so unlucky after all. Entangling Vines was drawn on the first turn, the only turn that wouldn’t be dangerous to play Skills, according to the journal. I played the card, and reached my hand towards Gremlin Nob. Immediately, thin, thorny vines grew from the ground, wrapping around the monster. I thought for a while more, before going with lowering Nob’s strength even further. Meanwhile, the Ironclad had already inflicted the monster with Vulnerable to prepare for the next turn.
And then, Nob let out a loud roar, as his turn began. Starting from this moment, every skill played would increase its strength for the rest of combat. Of course, I had to inform my ally…
But before I could even say anything, the Ironclad had already started charging forward.
I watched in total disbelief, as the warrior screamed and swung his sword, attacking the enemy as if he hadn't been fighting in quite a while. I couldn’t make heads or tails of what he was playing, but he played his cards so quickly, I doubt that he actually gave his play any thought. At this point, I really didn't know if he was bloodthirsty, mad, or just plain dumb anymore.
For some reason, it… worked. Gremlin Nob was defeated in a few turns, and both of us survived, taking some moderate hits in the process.
I felt like I hadn’t contributed much during the fight though, because the only thing I could do was to try to weaken the monster. I couldn’t deal as much damage as the Ironclad, what if he thought I was a burden…?
“H-hey…” I softly asked, as we gathered the gold, relic and card drop from the monster. “Y-you are… wounded. Do… Do you need healing?”
“I’ve been through worse, kid. Save that for later.” He dismissed, gesturing me to stay away.
I understood that he had excellent self-healing capabilities, but I was worried that his recklessness might come back at him some time, and he might not be able to make it. At the same time, I felt like I needed to do something to help him, as an ally.
In the end, I decided to not force him. I must have trust in him, he’s strong, after all.

have you ever read a fanfic so good that you wanted to write a fanfic about that fanfic, but was too shy / too intimidated to ask for the author’s permission and too afraid that your writing wouldn’t be half as good as theirs and that it would be an insult to their work that was basically a literal masterpiece, so you just sat there fantasizing about their work and how beautiful it was and how you wished you could just eat it and how you wished canon could write your blorbos half as good as this writer did and how you just wanted to cry because you just loved that fic so much????

Revival - Chapter 2: First Encounter
I walked to the door leading to the Exordium, where my ascent began. The red walls were like ruins, collapsing, with green torches as light sources. The stone floor was cold and mossy, the whole place gave me chills, I could feel like anything could jump out of those piles of broken bricks and stones. The Spire was dangerous, and it had always been. There would be many enemies, be them monsters, automatons, or people with bad intentions. I would be attacked, I would get hurt, and I might even be killed.
Thoughts of death suddenly filled my mind. I wanted to live, yes, but my main purpose here was to end my suffering from the Spireblight. What if I couldn't find an answer here, and nothing could help me? Then dying wouldn't be that bad. I took a deep breath, trying to erase those thoughts out of my head. it wasn't time to think of this nonsense.
In fact, death, to me, was better than all the pain I had been suffering because of the Blight. Dryads are supposed to be beautiful creatures that look like the embodiment of the woods themselves. But I looked nothing like that, all thanks to that Spireblight. Apart from my bright green eyes, my body was... just black and light gray, with some withered brown from the thorny wreath on my head, the vines wrapped around me, and the messenger bag. But appearance wasn't my concern, it was my health that made me want to end the Blight so badly. I was almost always in pain, and even my power was also affected. I could still summon and control plants, but they were all dark and withered, just like my dying self. And when I said I was dying, I meant it. My body was so fragile, like wood infected by termites, it felt as if anything could break my body. It just kept getting weaker and weaker everyday.
Before I even knew it, I was already on the first floor. The smell of rotten woods, the dust particles in the air, the faint crackling sounds of the torches, all made a poor attempt at hiding the malice in the room. My eyes darted around, trying to locate the source of that malice energy. Immediately, I heard scuttling sounds coming out of a pile of bricks at the corner of the room. The brick pile gently moved, then I saw two hairy, louse-like creatures drawled out, one red, one green.
The battle began. Time suddenly stood still, as that 10-card deck appeared in front of me. Five of the cards were automatically drawn, and I could see the intention of the two lice on their heads. One intended to attack me, and one intended to buff itself. I felt something in my messenger bag. It was the journal, which emitted some kind of magical power. The two lice immediately got affected by it, and I could see their Strength had been reduced by one. These creatures shouldn't be a problem, I thought to myself. Just Strike them, and Defend when they attack, using the cards provided. But much to my surprise, the deck seemed to have a direct link to my mind. They felt more like the combat moves that I could use than just playing the cards, as my body moved in unison with each Attack card I played.
Tumblr media
I raised my hand up high, ready for a Strike, and thorny, withered vines erupted from the ground. I pointed my fingers at the lice, then swiped my arm. The vines copied my motions, hitting those creatures, one by one. But then they curled up in a ball, and their hardened shells made them invulnerable to attacks. I paused and looked at the creatures, then shifted my gaze to my vines and my deck. A furrow appeared between my eyebrows, as I thought of what to do next. I was going to play another card, but I realized that I ran out of energy for the turn. I did play one Defend, but nothing really happened except for a strange number telling me how much Block I had. My turn ended, and the lice attacked me. Much to my surprise, instead of having a shield protecting me from the attack, it was I who controlled the vines to block the attack from one of the louse. I then noticed those lice had returned to their previous form, so I finished off the creatures over a few turns, then sat down on the mossy stone floor.
And just like that, three new cards appeared in front of me, waiting for me to choose one to add into my deck. "Those attacks were too weak, I will need a better attack card. Or I could use my vines to strangle the enemies so that they could die slowly… Or I can grab a better block card." I thought for a while, and decided to go for Entangling Vines to strangle the enemies. My body was weak, and taking damage wasn’t what I wanted, so a source of passive damage would be good.
Then, I remembered the journal. I didn’t know it could weaken the enemies like that, and it got me curious. I hadn’t had a chance to examine it further either, so I thought this was a good time to do so.
“For anyone who happened to find this, This journal has been enchanted with a spell that can help to aid you in the journey to the Spire. I don’t know the condition of this thing when you get it, but if it looks tattered, then this spell won’t work as well as when it was casted. In that case, the content of this would help you more. Turn to the next page for the table of contents.”
The whole journal was filled with information about possible enemies that can be encountered within the Spire, ranging from normal enemies, to elites and bosses. There were simple illustrations too, and I could tell how much danger the author had been through to write this. The spell, despite being weakened over time, still felt familiar to me. I had a feeling that I could somehow strengthen it, but I didn’t know how. That would be something for later then. I had just begun my ascent, and there was still enough time for me to figure this out.
And so, I stood up, and started moving again.

Revival - Chapter 1: Neow
The Spireblight. The damned blight that has made the crops unable to grow. Any plants or trees that can grow edible parts, they were all affected by this Blight.
Or maybe that's what I thought.
Very rarely, people came to my place. And it was even rarer when they came in groups. I heard them talking about the Spireblight, how it affected agriculture, and how it made them suffer. I felt bad for them, but at the same time, I felt helpless. I am a Dryad, my life is tied to a tree, and unfortunately for me, that tree is affected by the Blight.
There goes a saying: "Some people are too kind, because they have suffered enough, and they don't want others to feel the same way as they did."
I couldn't remember where I had heard that from, but... it wasn't my motivation to come to the Spire. Or was it? I didn't know. The only thing in my mind, was that, the Blight must have something to do with this Spire, and by going to the Spire, I could possibly find a way to end this Blight, and restore my health.
I clutched the journal in my hands tightly, a journal with a torn cover and yellowed pages. I didn't remember where I got this from, but I felt like it was an important thing. So I put the journal back into the messenger bag that I carried. There was some gold in a sachet bag, a few packages of herbs and tea, and a pen.
Before I knew it, I was already in the Spire - a dangerous tower of unknown origin. Just as the name suggested, it seemed to have a spiral structure, stretching as high as the sky. The tower stood alone in the middle of nowhere, attracting brave adventurers wanting to find rare treasures. But as far as I had heard, nobody had ever returned. The pain from the Spireblight struck me again, as if my body was reminding me of my reason to be here. But why did it have to remind me in that way? I looked around the room I was in, and saw a huge, huge creature. The creature looked like a whale, with one, two, three pairs of glowing, yellow eyes. My eyes widened in fear, and I trembled, then took a step back. What was this creature, why was it here, would I have to fight this thing, and would it kill me? I was frozen in place, and didn’t know what to do.
"Be not afraid..." As if it could feel my fear, the creature murmured. From the voice, it seemed to be a female. "I mean no harm..."
"W-Who... are you?" I asked, still slightly shaking.
"I... am... Neow..." The creature said. "You are here... to end the Spireblight..."
How in the world, could she know why I was here?
I was still scared, but I felt no malice. So I nodded in response to the huge creature.
"I will bless you... a new card, a small relic, or even... more valuable things... with a price… Choose…"
…A card? I was confused. But then, something started materializing in front of me. It was a deck, consisting of 10 cards with a green and brown-tinted black border, laced with thorny patterns. There were 4 Strikes, 4 Defends, and two cards that seemed to be combat techniques that I picked up before entering the Spire, based on my nature power.
Tumblr media
“You combat with cards…” Neow explained. “This is… how the Spire works…” She then continued, “But this place… is still extremely dangerous. The wounds… are still real. Receive my blessing… enter… and you will know what I mean…”
I looked at the gigantic whale, then directed my gaze into my hands. I rummaged through my bag, and found nothing much worth of use. Gold might be an option to trade, but I felt like it’s not what she’s asking in return.
“But… I-I have nothing…” I looked down. I thought that would just be it, but I was wrong. Just as I thought about leaving, a strange, magical light appeared in front of me. I lifted my hand, and the light slowly transformed into something as it landed in my palms.
Tumblr media
…a Dream Catcher. It was made of light green strings, with three light blue feathers.
Neow slowly blinked. She didn’t say a thing afterwards, but her six glowing eyes locked onto me. I could feel her urging me to go.
I nodded to thank her for the blessing, and then began my ascent at the Spire.
Hope filled my eyes, but I didn't know what else I was hoping for, apart from putting an end to the Blight. I knew, the journey would be dangerous, but I had made up my mind.
