This article describes how to examine a small memory dump file. A small memory dump file can help you determine why your computer crashed.

Small memory dump files

If your computer crashes, how can you find out what happened, fix the issue and it prevent it from happening again? You may find the small memory dump file useful in this situation. The small memory dump file contains the smallest amount of useful information that could help you identify why your computer crashed. The memory dump file contains the following information:

The Stop message, its parameters, and other data

A list of loaded drivers

The processor context (PRCB) for the processor that stopped

The process information and kernel context (EPROCESS) for the process that stopped

The process information and kernel context (ETHREAD) for the thread that stopped

The Kernel-mode call stack for the thread that stopped

To create a memory dump file, Windows requires a paging file on the boot volume that is at least 2 megabytes (MB) in size. On computers that are running Microsoft Windows 2000, or a later version of Windows, a new memory dump file is created each time that a computer crash may occur. A history of these files is stored in a folder. If a second problem occurs and if Windows creates a second small memory dump file, Windows preserves the previous file. Windows gives each file a distinct, date-encoded file name. For example, Mini022900-01.dmp is the first memory dump file that was generated on February 29, 2000. Windows keeps a list of all the small memory dump files in the %SystemRoot%Minidump folder.

The small memory dump file can be useful when hard disk space is limited. However, because of the limited information that is included, errors that were not directly caused by the thread that was running at the time of the problem may not be discovered by an analysis of this file.

Configure the dump type

To configure startup and recovery options to use the small memory dump file, follow these steps.

Note

Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

Double-click System, and then click Advanced system settings.

Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.

In the Write debugging information list, click Small memory dump (64k).

To change the folder location for the small memory dump files, type a new path in the Dump File box or in the Small dump directory box, depending on your version of Windows).

Tools to read the small memory dump file

Use the Dump Check Utility (Dumpchk.exe) to read a memory dump file or verify that the file has been created correctly.

Note

The Dump Check Utility does not require access to debugging symbols. Symbol files hold a variety of data which are not actually needed when running the binaries, but which could be very useful in the debugging process.

Or, you can use the Windows Debugger (WinDbg.exe) tool or the Kernel Debugger (KD.exe) tool to read small memory dump files. WinDbg and KD.exe are included with the latest version of the Debugging Tools for Windows package.

Open the dump file

To open the dump file after the installation is complete, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

Change to the Debugging Tools for Windows folder. To do this, type the following at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:

Examine the dump file

There are several commands that you can use to gather information in the dump file, including the following commands:

The !analyze -show command displays the Stop error code and its parameters. The Stop error code is also known as the bug check code.

The !analyze -v command displays verbose output.

The lm N T command lists the specified loaded modules. The output includes the status and the path of the module.

Note

The !drivers extension command displays a list of all drivers that are loaded on the destination computer, together with summary information about their memory use. The !drivers extension is obsolete in Windows XP and later. To display information about loaded drivers and other modules, use the lm command. The lm N T command displays information in a format that is similar to the old !drivers extension.

Simplify the commands by using a batch file

After you identify the command that you must have to load memory dumps, you can create a batch file to examine a dump file. For example, create a batch file and name it Dump.bat. Save it in the folder where the debugging tools are installed. Type the following text in the batch file:

When you want to examine a dump file, type the following command to pass the dump file path to the batch file:

When Windows OS crashes (Blue Screen of Death or BSOD) it dumps all the memory information into a file on disk. This dump file can help the developers to debug the cause for the crash. The default location of the dump file is %SystemRoot%memory.dmp i.e C:Windowsmemory.dmp if C: is the system drive. Windows can also capture small memory dumps which occupy less space. These dumps are created at %SystemRoot%Minidump.dmp(C:WindowMinidump.dump if C: is the system drive). Below you can find details on crash dump settings. This article is applicable for XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 10.

How to enable or disable kernel memory dump? If dump is enabled, how to choose mini dump or full kernel dump?

We can configure the dump settings through system properties. Detailed steps are given below.

In this window, click on the drop down list under ‘Write Debugging information’

This list would show 6 options – None, Small memory dump(64 KB), Kernel memory dump, Complete memory dump, Automatic memory dump and Active memory dump. If you want to disable memory dump then select none from these options. Otherwise select your required option from the other three. After this click on OK and close the windows.

How to change crash dump file location?

You can set the dump file location in the same Startup and recovery window mentioned above. In the ‘Dump File’ text field you can enter the location of the file. You can also change mini dump file location – Select ‘small memory dump‘ from the drop down box and then give the location of the file in the bottom text box.

How to enable or disable crash dump file overwrite?

In the Startup and recovery window(which can be opened from System properties window) unselect the check button ‘Overwrite any existing file‘ to disable crash dump overwrite.

How to disable crash dump?

Open registry editor and navigate to the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCrashControl. Set the registry value CrashDumpEnabled to 0. Or you can simply run the below command which does the same.

Set the value of the registry key ‘Overwrite’ to 0. This key can be found in the registry path mentioned above. If you want to overwrite existing crash dump file, then set its value to 1. Below command would disable crash dump overwrite.

Conclusion: While Cinema 4D Studio is designed for advanced 3D, the extra tools found in it are still user-friendly and intuitive. Generating advanced 3D affects such as hair is pretty easy and fast. The app does much of the work for you. For example, hair will automatically swoosh and sway as you move your character around; and making thousands of objects collide with each other only takes a few mouse clicks to set up.

While the app may be great, its completely out the consumer price range at nearly $4000 USD, as of this writing. Unless you're a serious graphic artist, or unless this app is something that your company can purchase for you, this isn't something a regular user will purchase.

Notes: This tool works for Schwinn bikes from 1948 to 1982. All serial number records before 1948 were lost in a factory fire.

Important!

The serial number must be off the movement of the watch (where the gears are), not off the case. These two serial numbers are unrelated. For more information see the Watch Serial Number web page.

You must give the letter prefix of the serial number, if there is one.

If you don't have an exact Serial Number, you can use many other Search Options. There is a lot of flexibility here.

There is an example with explanations that goes over every part of the search results. The Watch Codes are similar ones are used by many experienced watch collectors. Also the names that are marked on the movement have been abbreviated.

If you have a quartz watch, one that uses a battery, one with alogo, instead of the name 'Elgin' on the dial, or anythingmade after around 1965, then you are pretty much out of luck. I havezero information about these newer watches. For a longer explanation,see my Newer Elgins webpage.

If you have a wrist watch, and the only number on the movement is a three digit number in the range of 500-999, then there is no serial number. You may be able to get some limited information by entering the query'g=<number>' (where <number> is replaced with the 3 digitnumber)

This database is the most complete and accurate records of Elgin watches that I know of. That said, I know of errors in it, and I know that it isn't complete. If there are any discrepancies, verify the serial number. If the serial number is correct please let me know about the problem by emailing me.

How to Open a Watch Case

While opening a watch isn't rocket science, a watch can be damaged if you try to open it incorrectly. Never use a screwdriver to try to open a case. I find using my finger nail to be quite effective and it is soft enough to not scratch a watch case.

If you really aren't sure what to do, take it to one of your local jewelers and ask them to show you how to open it. While it is open, make sure you record everything written on the movement of the watch and the watch case. These details can sometimes be important.

Configuring Sublime Text For Python 3

In this tutorial we're going to show you how to run python in sublime text 3 on windows. Some time ago I made a list of recommended packages for atom, now I will do the same for Sublime Text 3 (ST3). Sublime Text 3 (ST3) is a lightweight, proprietary cross-platform source code editor, editor very similar to atom (supports plugins, typically community-built) and known for ease of use, strong community support and it's pretty fast (much better than atom in opening, closing. Cntrl + S or save as 'C: Users username AppData Roaming Sublime Text 3 Packages User SublimeREPL-python.sublime-build' updating username or path as needed. This should be wherever your settings and builds are stored by Sublime Text. Go to Tools, Build System, select SublimeREPL-python. All done-now to test.

I want to configure Sublime Text 3 to build Python 3, but I don’t seem to understand how the builds work. Many tutorials have told me to make a build file containing code such as:

and save it as a file called Python.sublime-build or python3.sublime-build (much of the information I found was conflicting). One tutorial suggested creating a new folder in the ST3 Packages folder called Python and add the build file in there, whilst other tutorials suggested leaving it in the folder called User.

One tutorial explained how I had to change the Environment Variable path on my operating system to get it to work. That didn’t seem to help either.

I added a folder Python to Packages (since it wasn’t there already) and added in a build file with the name Python.sublime_build which featured only the code I posted above in it. Now when I attempt to run Sublime Text it gives me this error:

The reason you’re getting the error is that you have a Unix-style path to the python executable, when you’re running Windows. Change /usr/bin/python3 to C:/Python32/python.exe (make sure you use the forward slashes / and not Windows-style back slashes ). Once you make this change, you should be all set.

Also, you need to change the single quotes ' to double quotes ' like so:

The .sublime-build file needs to be valid JSON, which requires strings be wrapped in double quotes, not single.

Tested successfully on Sublime Text 3. Assuming Sublime Text and package control are already installed . . .

Install Python (python.org) and pay attention to where it is installed or choose a simple location like the C drive, agreeing to remove character limit at the end of the installation.

Install package SublimeREPL (Cntrl + Shift + P, Package Control – Install Package, SublimeREPL, Enter).

Go to Preferences, Package Settings, SublimeREPL, Settings – User.

Paste in the following, updating the file path to your python installation folder, as needed. You may customize these and choose whatever syntax you like (last line) but I prefer my output in plain text.

Save and close the file (SublimeREPL.sublime-settings).

Go to Tools, Build System, New Build System.

Replace all existing text with the following:

Go to Tools, Build System, select SublimeREPL-python.

All done–now to test. Open or create a simple python file, having a *.py extension and save it wherever desired.

Make sure the file is open and selected in Sublime Text. Now, when you press Cntrl + B to build and run it, it will open another tab, titled “REPL [python]”, executing and displaying the results of your python code.

Installation

First, download and install Sublime Text 3 from their official website.

Also, install Package Control from its website (follow the simple steps on that page). It is a useful tool that will help you install and update new plugins for Sublime Text.

After you have installed this package, open the Command Pallete, which can be opened from Sublime Text and pressing ctrl + shift + p (windows and Linux) or cmd + shift + p (OS). Once opened, type:

You will see all the available packages to install. You can read more about how to use Package Control here.

Install Sublime Code Intel by selecting the package SublimeCodeIntel. This package will improve the autocompletion in your Python, Django, HTML, JavaScript and CSS code. Check a demo here.

Following the same procedure as before, install Anaconda and Djaneiro.

Personalization for Python/Django

With this packages, you’ll get help in writing your code with the official style guide for Python, PEP8. However, I find the max line length limit too short: 79 characters. Therefore, I’ll show you how to extend this limit to 99 characters, which is also accepted by PEP8 but only for exclusive team projects (and provided that comments and docstrings are still wrapped at 72 characters).

From Sublime Text go to the upper menu: Sublime Text –> Preferences –> Package Settings –> Anaconda –> Settings – Syntax Specific – User

A new tab will open in your Sublime Text. Type:

{ “pep8_max_line_length”: 120, }

Save the file, close Sublime Text and open it again to make the changes effective. Make sure you really close the app, and it doesn’t remain open in your navigation bar (specially for Mac users).

Another thing we need to change is that by default, Sublime Text writes a Tab when the tab key is pressed, instead of 4 spaces. To change this, go again to the upper menu: Sublime Text –> Preferences –> Settings – User and write:

{ “translate_tabs_to_spaces”: true, }

Note: if there was something on that file, add it like:

Sublime Command Line

If you are using Mac OS X, you can add the subl command line to open files with Sublime Text.

To install it, you should run:

$sudo ln -s “/Applications/Sublime Text.app/Contents/SharedSupport/bin/subl” /bin/subl

Note: the above code is a single line (but it truncates here due to its length). Also, make sure that the folder /bin is in your PATH:

$ echo $PATH

should show a list containing the folder /bin. If it’s not the case, in your home directiory, open or crete a file named .procfile (with the initial dot) and add:

export PATH=$PATH:/bin

Create a project

I assume that the files of your project are contained into a folder, namely the projectfolder. We will open all the files in that folder at the same time:
