Content Warning: religion and transphobia⚠️
Happy Trans Day of Visibility 🏳️‍⚧️ I made a comic reflecting on my church upbringing as an eXvangelical trans person. The Jesus conservative Christians claim to represent looked lot more like many of the LGBTQ+ friends I know and love. Just some food for thought 💖

TO WHOEVER NEEDS TO HEAR THIS:
THE RAPTURE IS NOT REAL.
it will NOT happen.
The rapture was only introduced into US christianity in the late 18th-19th centuries.
Fundamentally, the rapture serves as a boogeyman to lord over believers, keeping them trapped in the church because....well....you dont want to be left behind when the rapture happens, do you?
YOU WILL NEVER HAVE TO TAKE THE MARK OF THE BEAST. THERE IS NO ANTICHRIST. THEY HAVE BEEN SAYING THE END TIMES ARE NEAR SINCE TIME STARTED. ALL OF THE "SIGNS" ARE JUST THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN HAPPENING IN THE WORLD FOREVER. THEY WILL HAPPEN AGAIN AND AGAIN. AND THE RAPTURE WILL NEVER HAPPEN.
you will not hear a trumpet call and then be left alone. you will not have to survive the tribulation of apocalyptic hell with satan ruling the earth until christ returns.
i promise.
you have a future!!!! you really do!!!! life will not end suddenly bc of the rapture.
plan for your future!!! envision it!!!! think about places you want to go and people you want to spend time with!!!
in order to build a beautiful future for yourself you must envision it!!!

PSA: If you're searching out resources to help cult survivors, check their citations and look out for these names - and if you see them, leave immediately - because these people are all far right conspiracy theorists:
Svali
Cisco Wheeler
Fritz Springmeier
Cathy O'Brien
Mark Philips
Lawrence Pazder
Michelle Smith/Pazder
Lauren Stratford
Texe Marrs
Bill Schnoebelen
Rebecca Brown
Mike Warnke
Literally all of these people were (or in some cases, still are) pushing far right conspiracy theories derived from early modern witch panic, blood libel, and The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. Literally do not trust anyone or anything that cites them.

just fyi if someone tells you they were in a cult, “which cult?” is literally never an appropriate reaction. neither is “that’s so cool, i love true crime!”. hope this helps <3

Advice for Ex-Conservatives
I was raised in a hardline GOP/Southern Baptist household. During my later teens, I deconstructed the beliefs I was taught, and I've spent my adult life as a bleeding-heart socialist.
I want to tell you the truth: you never stop learning.
I want to tell you the truth: you never stop deconstructing.
I was on Twitter back then. I followed every left-of-center person I could find. I was soaking up ideas like a sponge. I took every tweet as gospel, which turned out to be VERY unsustainable.
You see, progressives disagree with each other. A lot. About pretty much everything.
It's not possible to reconcile every idea. You can't please everybody. That's the biggest mistake I made when I was fresh out of the conservative bubble. It took me by surprise how much people who agreed on 95% of issues could turn on each other with such incredible venom. It's something you will have to accept.
You can't just sponge up everyone else's ideas. You have to take everything you read with a grain of salt. It's really okay to apply the same critical thinking you applied to your reactionary political and/or religious beliefs and apply that to what other progressives say. Test everything. Question everything. It really is okay.
On the other hand, you also want to avoid being an argumentative dick. People you agree with most of the time will sometimes express ideas you don't agree with.
If the ideas are genuinely odious (some form of bigotry) then just block them and move on. It's VERY rare to change somebody's mind online. For your own mental health, it's best not to engage unless you are doing so for the sake of others.
Yet what if the idea isn't absolutely odious? What if it's just a reasonable disagreement? In most cases, I'd still recommend not engaging. Instead, study what the other person is saying. See if it makes sense, or if you can at least learn from their perspective.
You can actually learn something from a bad idea. And you don't have to be 100% in alignment with someone to treat them with respect or learn from them.
In conclusion, my new ex-fundies and ex-reactionaries, remember two things. One, it's okay to think critically about the ideas other leftists have. None of us agree on everything! Two, it's better to block than to be an argumentative asshole. And, you can often learn something from folks you disagree with!
Let's make a kinder world!

I’m so fucking pissed that my 23 years In evangelical christianity were spent learning lame shit like John 3:16 when we could’ve been focusing on cool stuff like Moses have a fucking sick ass wizard duel in Exodus 7

i don’t know why i only recently realized that most kids didn’t grow up with the anxiety of thinking that at some point in the near future they’d have to hide in their basement or attic because the government would hunt them down because their religion would be banned due to ‘gods plan’.
most kids didn’t have to feel guilt at wanting that day to never come even though god said it would happen because they were scared. most kids didn’t have to see real footage of peoples homes being invaded by police in countries were their religion was banned.
most kids never watched a dramatization imade by their religion where in the end police found the basement full of people were it was implied that you better be ready for that to happen to you because there’s a high chance it will.
most kids never watched a music video made by their religion where they were in an open field and police members rushed towards them guns drawn with the implied you better have the courage to be able to face that in the future because it very well could.
most kids don’t have this fear that runs so deep in me because their religion never did that. and hell, maybe it fucking did i don’t know anything about what other kids childhoods were like. but that was my childhood. this is my life.
having nightmares about my house being raided by police and being held at gunpoint.
being terrified of police men or swat members because my only exposure growing up was how in the future they’d hunt us down.
still wondering if i would be able to survive time in prison because growing up we were told we should be ready to serve if it means keeping our faith
this shouldn’t be my normal. but it is. and i fucking hate the watchtower for making it so.
fuck the governing body, fuck all those videos they made for their convention. fuck being raised a jehovah's witness. i fucking hate it

I said this a couple years ago (one year ago?) and most of the comments on tumblr actually did not know this, so to reiterate what you’re up against: a VERY mainstream belief among American Christian fundamentalists is that they are the only ones who experience love. They raise their kids to think that everyone “living in sin” (all other faiths, atheists, and LGBT people) goes through life sad and empty, falsely believing they know what love feels like, and will never know until they’re “saved.” It’s not as simple as them diminishing the humanity of others out of hate, but being deeply brainwashed to believe others are automatically mentally less human. They are also very good at convincing new converts that they really are experiencing this “real” love for the “first time;” the same way members of all cults can become wholeheartedly convinced that they’re receiving psychic alien messages or communing with spirits. Cult conditioning is simply that powerful.
