I actually really like this headcanon, for a very specific reason. When I first saw an exo, I instantly fell in love with them in concept, but at the time, knew very little about what they were. I can’t remember if this was because the lore hadn’t been revealed yet, or because I just hadn’t heard it. I just remember the initial description of them, describing them as repurposed sentient war machines of sorts, was very appealing to me, because of how accepted they were in the world they were a part of. I liked the idea that these constructs, with the minds and emotions of any other person, were treated as such unquestioningly all these years after their initial purpose had been forgotten, and removed from their current existence. They were just... people. No one ever doubted that.  What I saw as a revelation, which is being contested here, of the exos just being human minds in robot bodies... just kinda took away that little part of what I liked about them. That aspect obviously just wasn’t there if they really were just people. I liked it more when they were robots through and through like I had thought initially, because that just makes the society of this universe so much cooler. I think this is my new headcanon too now, I want to think of it the way I did back then.
I Headcanon that...
Exos are weird.
But that's a good thing... in some ways.
There are multiple models of exo and multiple types. The leading name in exo science was obviously Clovis Bray, but few others pop up later on once exo science is perfected.
Now you exo lovers may hate me on this but, exos are not a human conversion. Exos have no biological parts they are fully autonomous robots. "But Attack." I hear you say. "Cayde mentioned in his journals he remembered his life before." He has flashes of memories that he doesn't remember of people he doesn't exist.
His mind is a fake one. And the thing about humans... is that we without memory yearn for them. We know we have forgotten or that there should be there. Fake memories? Implanted into war machines so they can live? So they can think. A machine who can think and react is a better soldier. The issue with giving them humanlike-minds, they need human like memories.
That's where DER comes in. To implant these memories they have to boot you up. And sometimes a brain doesn't like fake memories and rejects them. Either their too good, or not good enough or not cohesive. Making a human is hard. I'm certain there are a lot of exos who were never human. Just close approximations of them. Given lives that never existed.
Now some are due to life altering events, a rich man's daughter is sick or dying? Make her into a robot. Right? You can just make them into a robot? An old man fears death so he becomes an exo. That's how it works you just become robot... wait how does flesh become robot?
It doesn't.
Any human "saved" by the Exo science lab died. Dead and gone. If Clovis Bray and other such labs can make a fake human life and implant them into a robot. What's to say they can't forge the memories of a living person, learning just enough to make cohesive minds to implant into a body. I mean, its not hard to tell someone. "Your name is Henry Sterling. You are an exo now." All the while the real Henry is rotting away ... actually probably burned. The lapse in memory? DER. Changes to personality? DER. Its the catch all ain't it?.
Exos are weird. Exos are Warmachines. Make a new character in D1 it tells you as such.
War takes many forms.
Surveillance.
Reconnaissance.
Infiltration.
Destruction.
There are some exo types that have features to help them fight. Auto targeting systems, vocal replication and mimicry. Internal weapon systems. Armour plates. Who knows what makes and models they have.
But exos have human minds. And arguably human souls. But odd how the traveler. Won't rezz a fallen or cabal to protect itself but it will a war machine with no biological components.
Now this is getting long. Too long ill have a happier part too later.
Attack out.

I’m probably finding this a lot cooler than it is, but... I’m finding it cool enough to both post it on youtube and post it on Tumblr (and also make it my first post on both platforms
