i don't think paul wanted exclusivity with john (too much pressure, too queer, too real), but he DID want john to love him best, and when john stopped loving him best, paul's mental state crumbled like stale coffee cake under the weight of his own unexamined codependency

he was fine with cyn, because cyn wasn't john's Everything. she was just Wife--an accessory, a given, because john was a man, and men have wives.

(or will have wives, when they get around to it--you know, when the timing is right, when she wants kids, when i'm ready to settle down, i'll get around to it eventually...)

yoko wasn't just Wife (or wife-to-be), though. she was Everything, and stepped right into the slot that john wanted filled, but paul couldn't (didn't want to?) fill. paul wasn't going to be john's Everything. he knew that.

by the way he talks, i don't know if he even realized it was wanted of him. or if he did, the idea was so absurd that it didn't bear examination.

when it went bad, paul seems like he desperately tried to talk himself out of WHY it went bad. he didn't have the right to exclusivity, even though he didn't want it:

"yoko is fine, actually, except that i want her gone so i can have john back, but it's for professional reasons, and i'm fine and i'm glad he's happy, but i really just want her to go away. but it's fine. i'm fine." (x)

i think that if paul had it his way, he'd be allowed to dance around naming whatever was between them forever--the two of them with separate homes, and wives to mother their children, and keep house, and be Women.

all the plausible deniability you could ever possibly need for an emotionally and professionally codependent lifetime with your bestie.
